#90sInJuly #CowboyDan

I never thought l'd like Western fiction. Well, l don't actually know whether l do, but definitely l like Louis L'Amour.
I like his lyrical decriptions, his rough but sensitive cowboys, his elusive clever lndians. I like his epic stories, his long silences, his vivid nature.
This is a simpler story, but still very enjoyable and with great characters.
He's a great author.

CaitZ Louis L'Amour is one of my favorite authors. I started collecting his books in high school and think I've got them all. I pull one out and read it every once in awhile. My favorite is Haunted Mesa. 7y
Bradleygirl And for a startlingly amazing epic of his, you can go full pre-medieval with The Walking Drum! 7y
JazzFeathers @CaitZ l've also read The Lonesome Gods, first novel l read of him. Loved it 😍 7y
JazzFeathers @Bradleygirl oh, l've read that one! Great story... though l tend to prefer his westerns 😊 7y

I raided Barnes & Noble's westerns shelf for today's prompt! Maybe I should start reading westerns! #cowboydan #90sinJuly

#90sinJuly #CowboyDan So the first thing I thought of for 'Cowboy Dan' is the birthday party scene in the movie Parenthood where Steve Martin plays a character with the same name to save his son's party 🤷🏼‍♀️🤠👍 I don't read very many westerns or books with cowboys in them but here's two I thought of. I'm sure there were cowboys in Texas 1870 for News of the World & there's a story involving a paniolo in The Big Island in This is Paradise. 🐴🌴

Cinfhen 🏆🏆🏆Steve Martin 🤠🤠🤠love it 7y
DiruVamp Freaking love that movie!! 7y

Melissa_J I don't know that I've ever read a Western, at least not one I can think of off the top of my head. Are there any you recommend? 7y
Itchyfeetreader Same as @Melissa_J it is not a genre I have purposely tried to avoid and yet .... 7y
Blaire Love this. 7y
Grrlbrarian That's not a dirty little secret. It's awesome! 🐃🐎🌵 7y

coffeenebula You go cowgirl! 🤠 7y
Reecaspieces I have a cousin who says it is not a good book unless some one has horse sh!t on them!! 😂😳 7y
saresmoore Ahaha! That's amazing! I have loathed every single western I've tried to read, but I still think this is fabulous. 7y
chapter_fifty2017 I think that is so cute 😍 I used to wonder who borrowed all the westerns at my library ! Obviously a quiet bunch 🤔 7y
TK421 I've read a few of these and seen the movie of most of them. Josey Wales is great in book and film! 7y
Lizpixie I've always been a bit leery of westerns, a bad experience with a cheesy paperback in the early 80s, but I'm willing to give it another chance. What do you recommend I try? 7y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J @Itchyfeetreader I find I love the more "literary" westerns; Lonesome Dove, Little Big Man, True Grit, Deadwood, Ron Hansen's westerns. All of these authors are not strictly writers of the "western genre" and may be more approachable if you are not really a fan. ? 7y
LeahBergen @Crystalblu One of my all-time faves, too. ❤️ 7y
LeahBergen @quirkyreader I'm a big McMurtry fan. 👍🏼 7y
LeahBergen @Reecaspieces I like your cousin! 😆 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore We may find one that you'll like ... one day! 😉 7y
LeahBergen @chapter_fifty2017 I guess we ALL hide our liking of this genre! 😂 7y
LeahBergen @TK421 The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of my favourite movies. 💗 7y
LeahBergen @Lizpixie I would definitely recommend Lonesome Dove, True Grit or Little Big Man. 👍🏼 7y
LeahBergen @vivastory @saresmoore Loved that one. 👍🏼 7y
Itchyfeetreader @LeahBergen thanks for the tips.. 7y

Me to hubby: heard of a song called Cowboy Dan by group called Modest Mouse
Hubby : yeah, got a book about them at home. (Proceeds to tell me about band..)
This is book. Never heard the song or of the band!)

Robothugs I love them! I had to include a song by them. Perfect choice 😉 7y
rabbitprincess I know their song "Float On", possibly from the Rock Band video game ? 7y
vivastory They have a video directed by Heath Ledger for their song King Rat. It's on YouTube. Definitely worth watching. 7y

Cathythoughts So familiar. My husband could talk on any subject at length, he has kissed the Blarney Stone too many times. Jokes aside , the gift of the gab, it's a good gift ❤️ 7y
TrishB @Melissa_J @Cathythoughts he loves music and loves talking about it to anyone who listens!! 7y
Velvetfur Y'know what, I got taken to a gig of theirs many years ago because the guy I was dating was really into them. Actually, I bought us the tickets as a birthday present to him. They're not my kind of music at all, I was a bit bored at the gig, but they weren't terrible, just...bland, in my opinion. Apologies to anyone reading this who really likes them! It's funny though that they have come up on my feed on here after all these years 😊 7y

Fun fact: I was a teen mom, before it was 'cool' (gag). Work was scarce, my friends ditched me and I was alone, broke and bored. But I found thrift shop bag sales. I could fill my time, cheaply, with whatever books they had. No one donated 'good' books at the time but there was an endless supply of dirty cowboys and ranch hands. Had to be a #CowboyDan somewhere lol. All these years later, haven't parted with them

#90sinJuly #CowboyDan Ok, today's prompt is a bit of a challenge @Robothugs but I'm going with this amazing book I read a few years ago! It's about 4 childhood friends, one is now a rodeo star, another a farmer who married his HS sweetheart, then there's the guy who turned "city slicker" & lastly Lee, a bonafide musician with all the trappings of fame, success & money. This book is salt & earth goodness - a MUST READ ~ don't need to like cowboys?

wen4blu This one has been in my tbr pile for ages. Moving it up! 7y
emilyhaldi I've wondered about this one in the past- happy to see your positive endorsement!! 7y

#90sInJuly #day30 #CowboyDan This is, I believe, the only western book involving cowboys I own. I'm not a big fan of westerns as a whole, it's just not my genre, but this is not just a western, it's a paranormal romp through the deserts of California & Colorado. Lou Merriwether is a gun slinging, chain smoking, Stetson wearing Taoist psychopomp who's investigating the disappearance of young Chinese males from San Francisco. It's a wild ride!🐲

DivineDiana It sounds like it! 7y
