News of the World
News of the World: A Novel | Paulette Jiles
In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johannas parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act civilized. Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not rememberstrangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or becomein the eyes of the lawa kidnapper himself.

wanderinglynn MacMillian should fire him because instead of being an advocate for reading and sharing books with anyone and everyone, he‘s trying to make it so only those with financial resources can access books. For him, it‘s clearly greed. 7d
LibrarianRyan THIS IS A BUNCH OF MARLKEY! If he wants to look at the frictionless cost of ebooks he needs to look no further than amazon. Amazon undercuts EVERYONE EVEN LIBRARIES!

Libraries are not training people to expect stuff free, we are making things accessible to everyone. Amazon is training people to want free and cheep books, and under valuing authors and publishers.

I'll stop yelling for now. Sorry.
7d
DGRachel Beyond the impact on libraries and their patrons, I worry about the impact the backlash could have on authors. St. Martin's and Minotaur are both imprints of Macmillan and those two imprints publish some of my favorite books. I'm far more likely to give a debut author a chance if they're published by either imprint, even if I'm on the fence about the book description. The calls for boycotting Macmillan worry me. New authors will suffer, too. 7d
DGRachel @LibrarianRyan I agree with you about Amazon. How many times have you heard someone say “I won't pay more than $2.99 for an eBook“? The embargo won't make me change my buying or borrowing habits, but I think it's bad business on Macmillan's part. 7d
vivastory This embargo is ridiculous. I agree with others in this thread, Amazon is the real threat, not library patrons & frictionless costs 🙄 7d
Scochrane26 I love how he thinks we get e-books from the library “instantly”. Yes, after I sometimes wait 2-6 months, the same wait you have for their physical books. If I want a new book quickly, I‘ll go buy it, but I‘ve learned patience at the library. I‘ve been waiting 2 mths for an Agatha Christie book. 7d
Kayla.Adriena Remember that time that guy ( sorry don't remember his name) said something about taking funding away from libraries because "everyone buys their books on Amazon " and he had to apologize? This article makes me so angry! He should be sacked! And I should stop book buying on Amazon and instead from indie bookstores only ? 7d
ljuliel This really bugs me. I have several online only library cards, and most of the new release books have up to a 6 month wait already. I‘m not a very patient person, so if the wait is that long, I don‘t even put my name on the list. If it‘s one I‘m really excited to read, I‘ll just buy it . So if I‘m understanding the article correctly, libraries have a sort of rental policy ? 52 lends or 2 years ? Can any of the librarians tell how many lends 👇🏼 7d
ljuliel ☝🏼 they typically have out of a random book, compared to a really popular author ? And then you have to pay the same price ($60) for more copies after that ? I always wondered how that worked. Maybe time to choose books from other publishers instead. Would that work ? I‘m not sure what percentage of ebooks are available by them compared to others. 7d
ljuliel I‘m not sure Indie booksellers are ideal for people in my category. You‘re older, you have one income, you need large print, but don‘t like Romance books ( which is the main makeup of the LP books in our small libraries ), so we go with Kindle books which we can get sometimes at Amazon for a decent price. I don‘t live in an area with independent bookstores. I mainly depend on libraries or Amazon now because is what‘s available. 7d
Jillylovesbooks @ljuliel Some indie book stores have online ordering and will ship anywhere. We have Interabang Books here in Dallas and I know Book People in Austin is also popular. 7d
ljuliel Thanks @Jillylovesbooks , for the information. I‘ve never looked at that source for purchasing Large Print books. I‘m also clueless as to cost to purchase LP compared to regular sized print. 7d
Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads Me too, perhaps we should have an embargo on Macmillan books! 😡 (edited) 7d
Crazeedi This is a shame and we all need to voice our displeasure to these publishing houses 7d
Crazeedi @ljuliel exactly what you said 7d

“The Sky was washed with clouds in one rainy line after another...” The terrain is different but I was on a highway & had time to ponder over Captain Kidd and Johanna‘s journey. I especially love their symbiotic relationship. Captain Kidd‘s astute empathy stems from his news reading. That‘s my takeaway - that with the current polarised climate it‘s imperative that we read more, explore, disagree even but be aware of perspectives. #ReadToBeKinder

Choked on my tears as I wrapped up this one. A beautifully written story on the need for empathy and acceptance that there are many ways to live and many versions of truth. Jiles‘ writing is just magical! It draws you in slowly and then before you know it the book and you are inseparable.

2019 started off with a promise to read more. But it spiralled into a case of #Tsundoku. I realised part of my temptation grew from Litsy - too many fabulous books and too little time! So I stayed away till I sliced through my TBR. ☝🏽though was an impulsive buy. Came via #FleasBookClub. Being a hardcore #RHCP fan, I just had to get it. I didn‘t read it in time for the chat but no regrets. It‘s turning out to be a great read! #NoGuilt #GimmeMore

Later today RHCP‘s bassist Flea 🌶hosts his bookclub live on Instagram. This month‘s choice was News of the World. I liked the ‘reading the news‘ subject as well as the relation between the travelling news reader and the little girl who travels with him through 19th century #Texas to be returned to her family after being kipdnapped by Kiowa indians.

Why did I wait so long to read this? It was wonderful! I haven't been so emotionally involved with characters in ages. I might even have teared up some at the end. In the 1870s, Capitan Kidd travels Texas bringing news of the larger world to small towns. He is entrusted with returning a child kidnapped by the Kiowa to her family. Their story is perfectly told.

We went out to brunch, & then I decided to flip all of our books sideways so we could fit more. That turned into sorting by size, genre, etc.🤦🏻‍♀️

Just finished this wonderful little gem on a cold, dreary day. Some people have a tendency to romanticize the “Wild West” but I feel like this book touches on the brutality of the time without sensationalizing it for shock value. I had just finished Ron Chernow‘s book Grant when I picked this up. I think I appreciated it even more having just learned so much about Reconstruction. It was a short read, but a good one!

Joanna, 10 years old and former captive of the Kiowa, and Captain Kidd, the cranky 70 year old man who makes his living reading news stories to small town audiences, make quite the incredible and unlikely pair. I‘m on a Western kick, reading this on the heels of Lonesome Dove. Lonesome Dove was a tough act to follow, yet I just loved this story with two more characters I won‘t soon forget. Captain Kidd is an older gentleman who travels through 1870s Texas reading the news in small towns where such information is scarce. He is tasked with returning Johanna, a young girl captured by the Kiowas, to her relatives outside of San Antonio and adventure ensues.

Proof that we did move from this chair today. Excellent. Finished in less than 24 hours. Terrific story based on a true character , combined with true events that happened to kids out west who were captured by Indians.

Sace And it seems like the perfect length for audiowalks (I can't seem to do super long audiobooks.) 14mo
Kaye Yes it‘s a bit of a challenge to stick with the long ones. I often have to bookmark then rewind repeatedly if I miss something , get distracted or fall asleep. This is pretty short. 6 hours @RestlessFickleBookHoarder (edited) 14mo
