Reactive to Relaxed is the most current Control Unleashed book from Leslie McDevitt. As someone who has struggled with Generalized Anxiety Disorder herself, Leslie writes that she was drawn to the dogs with big feelings. And that comes through in her thorough system to help these dogs navigate the human world. She throws in some good humor too. I‘ve used pieces of CU, but reading the A-Z of this system makes me realize that I need to commit to it.

bookishbitch This is such a great book. 1d
DogMomIrene @bookishbitch Yes! And I‘ve had it on the #TBR for years. Glad I‘m more fully following the program now. I‘ve got to watch some of the CU webinars I‘ve bought from Fenzi‘s FDSA too! 19h

Finally reading Control Unleashed: Reactive to Relaxed. This quote makes me think of all the dogs I see & hear out in the world who are struggling. So many dog guardians don‘t recognize the signs of anxiety in their dogs. When I‘m training Lizzie on walks, we regularly pass other dogs who lunge at us and those guardians shrug it off. I want to tell them their dog needs help, but I don‘t see that conversation going well. It‘s actually really sad.

Excited to get this email announcement this morning. Perfect timing for #NonfictionNovember #NFN

If you‘re looking for science-backed reputable books about canine care, Dogwise Publishing is the go-to source.

🎧 They‘ve got 7 audiobooks now with plans to keep adding. Maybe someday the word will spread wide enough to drown out the harmful training techniques from a certain “dog whisperer”🙄 so #DogsOfLitsy may celebrate fear-free communication.

mabell 🎉🎉 1mo
bookishbitch I love this! I'm a mostly retired dog trainer, and I despise the supposed "whisperer." He flunked a test in Germany on dog behavior that they require, so he wasn't allowed to train and had to have a German certified trainer with him if he did any talks there. 1mo
DogMomIrene @bookishbitch Ouch! Imagine being that poor trainer following him around and correcting him😬 How many times can “nope” be uttered politely? 1mo
bookishbitch @DogMomIrene right?! 😂😂😂 1mo

This is a good system, I think better designed for puppies that really care about their people than Akitas (they are very independent) but still has some useful information and training options.
3/5 stars informative and helpful with lots of photos and exercise suggestions

This is a good book, written with some excellent training suggestions and examples. I am particularly excited to try the barking reduction technique as Castle is extremely barky for an Akita.
The author does tend to wander a bit in subject matter and some of the research he uses is outdated, but his theory and suggestions are sound.
3.5/5 read for a very thorough book on dog language and how to better communicate. I recommend this book 😊💜🐕

I loved this book. I found the information very helpful and informative. Brandon had some good tips about training a dog and also how to solve the behavior problems. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a dog. I love the show too.

How this reader is dealing with a puppy to be joining our family in August! 🐶😅

Bookwomble Exciting! 😆🐶 Have you picked a name yet? 1y
Karisa @Bookwomble Yep! My son picked out the name Stoic. He liked the Roman philosophy when he learned about it in the sixth grade and said he‘d name his dog that two years ago! 1y
Bookwomble @Karisa Really held to his decision! 😄 Cool name, too 😎 1y

After retiring, psychology professor John Pilley got a border collie puppy and started working intensively with her. She eventually learned the names of over 1000 objects and learned various actions related to them. Here he discussing their time together and sneaks in lots of great info about learning. This is a great book and Chaser was very much alive when it was written, so you don‘t have to worry about living through her death at the end.

Graywacke Cute 🐶! 2y
SamAnne I might have to pick this one up. I love border collies and my dog, soulmate is Action Jackson. I followed this story. (edited) 2y

How Dogs Learn | Mary R. Burch, Jon S. Bailey, PhD.
Pickpick

This is another assigned reading from the Fall 2021 semester. Mary R. Burch gives concise and straightforward information in each chapter that I thought made it easier to read than the average textbook.
