The New Jessica | Francine Pascal, Kate William
post image
Pickpick

This is one of my favorites! Jessica has an identity crisis & is fed up with being mistaken for Liz. So she flatters Lila out of her Parisian wardrobe & dyes her hair black & speaking with a vague accent, causing quite the stir! Liz is miserable & feels like she lost her best friend & then loses her diary on top of it! Liz & Jeffrey fight too (Liz thinks he likes Jess & her new look more than her), but lands a mall modeling job that Jess wanted!

Taking Sides | Francine Pascal, Kate William

Straight from an OR tree farm, Jeffrey French causes quite the stir when he moves to #SweetValley! Enid immediately has a crush on him, but almost as quickly backs off when it‘s clear that Lila has her sights set on him! But the twins get involved in some the matchmaking, each supporting their bestie. Also, cousin Jenny from Houston is in town, spilling secrets & snatching Jess‘s latest crush! Jenny‘s a mystery cousin though-who are her parents?

This is such a fun & exciting one! Liz can‘t stop worrying about Regina (she can‘t stop thinking of when she had been kidnapped) & when she catches a glimpse of her, Claire‘s story changes from “aunt” to “step-aunt”—though Bruce knows it‘s a lie. Jessica comes up with a plan to use a magazine & the grocery delivery to make contact. They learn Regina & her parents are being held hostage for a computer chip prototype! Nicholas joins for the rescue!

Love Letters | Francine Pascal, Kate William

Gossip Caroline Pearce enjoys the attention she‘s received from everyone— including her college going older sister— after she invents Adam, a 6‘2” handsome baseball player from Cold Springs who “writes” her love letters. Really, Caroline copies from a library book of Robert Browning‘s letters— but when Liz writes a one-act about the famed literary couple, the jig is up. Alice receives a San Francisco job offer throwing the family in a spin!

It‘s the first #SVHCorpse! Tragic Tricia Martin succumbs to leukemia, surrounded by not her own family, but the Wakefields. Her older sister Betsy arrives to the hospital too late to say goodbye & causes quite a scene. Tricia made Steven promise to look after Betsy & she winds up moving into their den, determined to give up her drinking & drugging (& men). Jessica wants her gone & worries that Betsy is falling for Steven. Her scheme almost works!

JenlovesJT47 😅 are you keeping track of how many corpses there are? The list is long and distinguished! 😂 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I am!! 🤣 I figured a body count would be fun— though, naturally, I will continue to figure out the holiday count too! Technically, this is a two-corpse book since Roger Barrett‘s mom dies at the end, too! 2mo
JenlovesJT47 Jess has at least 3 boyfriends die in SVH. No wonder she‘s got issues 😅 2mo

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Also, they don‘t specify, but I think the Wakefields paid for Tricia‘s funeral since her own dad doesn‘t even go to it… something I don‘t think I would have even noticed reading it the first time around as a kid! 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I will have to keep a separate count for dead boyfriends! 🤣 2mo
JenlovesJT47 How funny, I never thought about that but you‘re probably right! Poor Tricia. I‘ve been doing a mini SV marathon this week and read a bunch of the SVK books yesterday. I‘m surprised how much I enjoy them. The one I read yesterday told what time they were born (Liz at 1:15 and Jess at 1:19 p.m.). Whoever did the kids books paid more attention to details than some of the others. 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know what you mean about inconsistencies… Roger‘s father was mentioned earlier as a drunk, but apparently he left sometime between Roger winning the scholarship race and this book… The SVK books are fun though! I am really enjoying these SVH books though! I am trying to go with publication order, so I think the super editions start soon which I always loved! 2mo
JenlovesJT47 The super editions are so fun! My favorite one that I had never read when it came out is Falling For Lucas. It is absolutely hysterical 🤣. And yeah, all the inconsistencies, like Lila being a klepto for 2 seconds then it never being mentioned again. And some weird stuff with her dad. I would LOVE to see the so-called Sweet Valley Bible that the ghostwriters used. I think continuity was a bit better in the books that came out in the 90s. 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Is that the one in NYC? Plus there‘s some weird siblings that are mentioned and then not at all— like Todd having a brother?? So strange! But, spotting these little errors makes the re-reading all the more fun because as a kid, I sure didn‘t notice (well except for when dead people show up again alive in SVU!). And yes! I can‘t believe they have kept that referenced Bible a secret still! 2mo
JenlovesJT47 Jessica Takes Manhattan is the one in NYC, Falling For Lucas is at a ski cabin in Colorado. I‘ll have to find my review and tag you. Speaking of extra siblings, I read the SVK book yesterday Ellen Is Home Alone. And she has an older sister named Debbie who I have zero recollection of in the middle school books. They mention her little brother Mark, who I know is in SVT. Maybe I‘m just forgetting! 👵🏻 As a side note, airheaded Ellen is ⬇️ 2mo
JenlovesJT47 Absolutely hysterical and I really wish she were in SVH. I just read The Unicorns Go Hawaiian last week (for the first time in 20 years!) and omg, Ellen cracks me up. Has the same ditzy personality in the kids books. 😆 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yes!! Ellen‘s sister definitely doesn‘t make it to the SVT series! Though at least her little brother survives! I was sad that Ellen disappeared too— I really grew to like her— she‘s really funny in the Unicorn Club books, too! 2mo
JenlovesJT47 Do they ever explain what happened to her? I assume she moved away or was killed by a rogue serial killer 😅 2mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Maybe one of the seven Sweet Valley haunted houses swallowed her up?? Along with Todd‘s little brother! 2mo

At the party to celebrate Liz‘s return from being kidnapped, Nicholas Morrow immediately falls in love with her. Jessica, harboring her own crush on Nicholas, seeks out computer nerd Randy Mason to learn more about computers (the Morrow family business). Liz doesn‘t want to hurt anyone‘s feelings, so she agrees to give Nicholas a chance & go on a date with him while Todd celebrates with his family. She gets caught & Nicholas smooths things over!

The drama club puts on Splendor In The Grass; Jessica stars opposite Bill Chase, using his crush on her to get him to do her bidding. She notices DeeDee Gordon‘s crush on Bill & intervenes. Bill continues giving DeeDee surfing lessons. DeeDee‘s father, a Hollywood agent, watches a rehearsal & says that he spied screenworthy talent. Certain it‘s her, Jessica magnanimously steps aside for DeeDee & Bill— until the screentest turns out to be for Bill!

Todd‘s traded his Datsun in for a Yamaha 750 Virago, much to Elizabeth‘s horror. She hasn‘t mustered up the courage to confess that after her cousin Rexy Wakefield‘s death, none of them are allowed on one. Liz finds herself getting weirdly jealous any time another girl is on the back of the bike & Todd tries to talk Ned & Alice into it, but fails. In the first #SVH twin intuition instance, Jess realizes while at Miller‘s Point that Liz needs her!

Jessica‘s long harbored a crush on wealthy & handsome Bruce Patman & she‘s more determined than ever to date him. He flirts with her at Secca Lake (even unties red bikini in front of everyone!), then make out in the bushes until Liz worriedly tracks them down. Jess loses herself with Bruce— from letting him beat her at tennis, changing her fashion sense & even skips cheerleading! When Liz schemes to reveal 1Bruce1 lied to her, Jess dumps him!

Soscha I still do want to go back & read these. I missed it the first time ‘round. 4mo
Ladygodiva7 I‘d love to read SVH all over again! 4mo
TorieStorieS @Soscha If you do, please tag me! I‘m having such fun re-reading them… but truly cannot imagine reading them with fresh eyes now as they are definitely a product of their era! 🤣 4mo

TorieStorieS @Ladygodiva7 I am having so much fun with this #SweetValleyReRead! I started this project last year with the Kids series and am only (finally!) to the high school ones! It‘s been such a joy though! 4mo
JenlovesJT47 I think I‘m going to have a mini marathon in the next week or two and see how fast I can get through the Kids and Twins series. I really can‘t wait to get to SVU and we should definitely buddy read when you get to that point. You‘re flying through! I read SVH slowly over 6-7 years. But I love these books. Been having such a hard time concentrating on reading lately and focusing on these for a bit might help. 4mo
JenlovesJT47 And! I unashamedly adore the character of Bruce Patman, warts and all. He‘s an asshole who‘s pretty consistently an asshole with flashes of humanity here and there. My favorite Bruce is in the Death Valley miniseries. I read those two books over and over again, loved the adventure/danger aspect even though it made zero sense to me why they didn‘t have an adult with them. I‘m imaging my 16-year-old nephew hiking alone in Death Valley. Not pretty! 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Well, nothing ends a reading slump like Sweet Valley! I don‘t feel like I‘m flying through since I‘ve been at this for 18 months! But I‘m really enjoying it! And definitely up for an SVU buddy read if you give me time to get through SVH! Oh and the senior year ones!! Most of those will be new to me! 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I am right with you on 1Bruce1 forever!! I love him… even though he‘s a real creeper in these early books! They soften him up and I always loved him in the secret diaries too!! Plus he‘s great in the SVU books, too! He gets to be poor!! 🤣 And definitely there‘s not much parenting or supervision in the series!! I don‘t want to think about any 16 year olds in any of these circumstances in real life!! 4mo
