Birthday: A Novel | Meredith Russo
post image

I feel so weirdly in sync with the #24in48 challenges this time around. For the #hour18 #romance challenge, I just finished birthday (fun fact: I got this as a prize at a previous #24in48!) and am about to start fumbled. not sure if birthday is just a romance novel, it‘s also a coming of age story and ya, but it was so romantic! I didn‘t always read much romance, and mystery‘s always been my go-to genre. But recently I‘ve gotten into it more. 📚

#24in48 #hour18 #romancechallenge I read a handful of historical romances in high school and then took a 20+ year break from the genre. I rediscovered romance novels a couple years ago, starting with Penny Reid. I love her “smart romances”. I then went looking for a new historical romance author and discovered Sarah MacLean. I‘ve been hooked ever since. This is some of my print and ebook collection. 😍

My go to romance author is definitely #CoHo, which is also my go to author when in a reading slump. Tagged book is my favorite so far which was my first book by her and also what made me love romance books. I‘ve tried other romance authors and none compare so far. @24in48 #hour18 #checkin

Uh-oh...I have to confess: I can count the romance novels I‘ve read on one hand. (if that!) Does Rainbow Rowell or Debbie Macomber count? I get most of my scandalous content from all the celeb memoirs I read. So please give me your rom-com recs, even if they might make my hair curlier! 🤣

24in48 There's so much in the world of romance to explore, you don't have to read things that make your hair curl! It's like choose your own adventure but pick-your-steam-level, LOL. Rom coms we love: Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren, The Flatshare by Bet O'Leary, Attachments by Rainbow Rowell! 5mo
Clwojick Both those authors count! I‘d recommend Brenda Novak, or Dorothea Benton Frank. 5mo
Clwojick This one was cute too! 5mo

PurpleyPumpkin I'm with you, romance is not my go-to genre. But how about something that may not be typical romance but would, I think, still fit the bill? I read the audiobook for A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue not so long ago, and I quite enjoyed it! 5mo
CouronneDhiver Even if they make my hair curlier... 🤣🤣🤣 5mo
Amandajoy I don‘t read a lot of romance but have started exploring the genre more recently. This was one of the first ones I read and I loved it. 5mo
UwannaPublishme @24in48 Thanks for all this great info and recs! And I get to pick my own steam level? This genre will be quite fun to explore! 😂👍🏻 5mo
UwannaPublishme @Clwojick I so appreciate your recs. 🤗👍🏻 I didn‘t realize how vast this genre is. 5mo
UwannaPublishme @PurpleyPumpkin This one sounds like fun! I will definitely check it out. Thx! 🤗❤️ 5mo
UwannaPublishme @CouronneDhiver You know us Curly Heads worry about these things! 🤣🤣🤣 5mo
UwannaPublishme @Amandajoy Thanks so much! A good title like this always woos me! 😁👍🏻 5mo

It's #Hour18 on the #24in48 #readathon.

The first English language romance I read was Outlander. A friend had talked me into it. That was 20+ years ago. I used to read a lot of crime/thriller/murder mystery, but have gradually shifted towards romance and historical romance over those two decades.

Nowadays I seem to read more romance than any other genre. Guess I like to see/read other people falling in love.

BooknerdsLife I seem to be reading more Romance these days too😁 I found them very relaxing 😌💖 5mo
CarolynM I'm another one who is enjoying romance more as I get older. These days I like to feel confident of a happy ending. (edited) 5mo

The first book (on the left) is about the author‘s life during the Cambodian Civil War, which I knew next to nothing about, and the second one is a memoir about her life after she emigrated to the US. It made me think more about what it would be like for people adjusting to a whole different culture, especially while trying to deal with the often horrific situations they‘re leaving behind.

Sign me up for the Kiese Laymon fan club. While these essays don‘t have the gravity and drama of Heavy, they still really broadened my view of what it is to be black in America. And these aren‘t your standard academic essays, they‘re vibrant and told in many different ways, including an epistolary one (squee)! 4⭐️
