I‘m not crying, you‘re crying!! A novella by one of the greatest modern author‘s, which examines the relationships between a man (with dementia?) with his dead wife (who he adored), his son (who confused him), and his grandson (mutual adoration). The story is short but the words in this book will resonate with me for a very long time.

Lucky enough to find this gem just hanging out at the library. My snuggle buddy is helping me get started on it this morning.

This is the second in the Lily Locke cozy mystery series. Lily is looking for the Magic of Mixology book that was stolen from her home. A cast of colorful characters are there to help including her vamp cousin Poppy, her shape shifting cousin Zin, and the handsome yet mysterious X. We also get to meet the fairies! A very fun, very quick read!

A cozy mystery which seems to combine Lily Ivory and Stephanie Plum. The Lily in this book finds out one day that she is a witch. This starts a fun adventure on a secret island where Lily meets her real family and tries to stay alive. A quick fun read.

Truth

I love S King. This book was a great supernatural mystery with Holly Gibney reprising her role as sleuth extraordinaire. Some of the descriptions of the violence were graphic, but no more than one would expect from a King novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

This was a DNF for me. I just couldn‘t get into the writing style nor was there anything that felt truly compelling or unique in the story. I was sad given that this book has received such high praise, but I just couldn‘t get into it.

WOW! The language, imagery, and thought provoking ideas in this book are amazing! Lawyer Autopsy Bliss invites the devil to Breathed, OH in the summer of 1984 and he arrives in the guise of a 13 y.o. child who will melt your heart. But madness ensues in Breathed and we are forced to examine the deepest, darkest parts of humanity. I read this and listened to the audio. The narrator really brings the town and the characters to life. A MUST read!

Four girls have a secret. Fifteen years after their dastardly deed they are called back to pay the consequences. Idk, I don‘t love Ware‘s books as much as I want to. The bad deed isn‘t really that shocking and there‘s A LOT of build up to work up to the the discovery of the deed. If I wasn‘t such a Type A, I would have stopped reading this in the middle and now knowing the ending, I would‘ve been fine with that.

Crazy, wonderful, murderous, narcissistic Joe is back. It took me longer to get into this book and I think the motivation and nature of the killings defied believability, unlike the first book. In this one we follow Joe to LA where he is looking for Love. Will he find it? If he does, will he kill it? I love these books bc somehow they make me hope the murderer finds what he is looking for an becomes a normal guy. SMH, what does the say about me?

Tracy Crosswhite is a Seattle detective obsessed by the murder of her sister 20 years earlier. Although Edmund House was convicted of the murder, Tracy never thought the evidence added up. When her sister‘s body is finally discovered, Tracy tries to put together the final pieces of the puzzle. I enjoyed the legal and psychological drama of this book and I discovered it‘s the first in a series. I thought the ending had a good twist!

The title says it all, but I agree with this character, there are far worse ways to die than being smothered by books!

Orhan‘s grandfather dies, leaving the family home in Turkey to an unknown woman living in California. This begins Orhan‘s trip to discover what happened to his family almost a hundred years ago during WWI and the Turks attempt to eradicate the Armenian population, something I had never heard of before reading this book. Although harrowing at times, this is a story that should be told. A story of family, war, love, heartbreak and forgiveness.

This is a non-fiction account of, what is essentially a mass murder, of Osage Indians in the 1920s. A tragic story that has gone untold for a long time and a story I never heard of until reading this book. It examines greed and racism in its most heinous manifestation. I started listening to it but then got the book bc, there are pictures! This was a great non-fiction read!

This is a book about Joe. Joe loves Beck. Joe is obsessed with Beck. Joe shows Beck how much he loves her by doing bad things. I loved Joe. I wanted a Joe of my own...kinda. But then I kept reading and Joe started to scare me. Don‘t be like Joe..or Beck...or Peach Is...or Benji. This book convinced me that being single is sometimes better than being loved. Because then you can spend three days reading a book like this.😀

Started reading this today and can‘t stop! It‘s sooooo good.

Eddie, a middle-aged teacher with a drinking problem, is haunted by tragedies from his youth, including the brutal murder of a young girl and the suicide of a teacher. The book flips between 1996 and 2016 seamlessly. It also moves asking seamlessly and culminates in an unexpected ending. I liked this book and look forward to more from this author.

This is a book in the cozy mystery series about Lily Ivory, a witch who sells vintage clothing and always seems to end up in the middle of a murder investigation. I usually like these stories, but was a bit frustrated by this one bc it took the characters FOREVER to figure out how the murder was committed even though it was super obvious. Nonetheless I like the group of characters in this book and the sweet twist at the end.

I would give this book 3.5 ⭐️. I definitely enjoyed it, but it was a little slow. Eleanor is a socially awkward 30 y.o. with a tragic past that has clearly stunted her emotional growth. After an encounter with the IT guy at her job, she starts to come out of her protective shell. I appreciated the use of big words (I had to break out the dictionary for 1 or 2) and her insightful commentary on loneliness spoke to my single girl heart.

Two sisters disappear one night. Three years later, only one returns. Can the FBI follow the clues to find Emma, who is still missing? This book was riveting! A psychological family drama with a twisted mother whose narcissism impacts all of those around here. This is a definite must read!

This was a typical haunted house/demonic possession story. Although certain parts gave me chills, there wasn‘t anything that kept me up at night or made me see shadows in the corner.

I didn‘t love this book. It a story of a dystopian future where evolution has started to regress (but you don‘t know how exactly) and pregnant women are valued (and thus imprisoned) as birthing a living child is difficult (but the why is a one paragraph explanation). The book seemed to focus a lot in religion (and the twisting of it) and a lot of repetitive introspection by the main character (she‘s keeping an journal for her unborn child).

This is true. That is all.

Let me start by saying I loved this book and would recommend it to all of my friends. The story is about a plucky protagonist/witch, Raven Kane. When you start reading this book, it has a bit of a cozy mystery feel, airy and light reading. However, it then takes a dark turn and murder and mayhem abound. When Raven examines her past lives, we also get an interesting lesson in both karma and forgiveness. This was overall a very entertaining read.

I ate this book up (pun intended). For me, this book was riveting from the very beginning. A mysterious restaurant that cooks food that feeds your soul as well as your body, which gifts an interesting sourdough starter to our protagonist, Lois. Said starter leads Lois to an underground farmer's market, with many more magical and wonderful things. This was a fun read from beginning to end!

Just starting this, but a Harry Potter reference is a great way to win me over!

Starting my first botm pick. Loved Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore so super excited to dig into this one.

Backman is emerging as one of the greatest writers of our time. This book was both heartbreaking and uplifting. It gave me hope for the human spirit while at the same time disgusting me by the human condition. As a parent, I felt both terrified and consoled. In my opinion, a good book helps us to examine ourselves and hopefully come out the better for it. This book did that for me.

I loved this book (although I thought they said some mean things about Seattle)! I listened to the audio version and the narrator did a great job changing voices and making it interesting. A wonderful story about a girl, Bea, and her eccentric mother, Bernadette, who disappears. But also just a great story about relationships and families. Laugh out loud funny at times and one or two tears as well.

Joe has a school assignment, to write the biography of an older person. Joe goes to a local nursing home as asks to interview a resident. He finds a convicted murderer who was paroled early bc he's dying of cancer. Joe sets out to prove he is innocent. Chaos ensues. Unfortunately I found this book terribly predictable. I was often several steps ahead of the characters. However the story kept me engaged for the few days it took to read it.

Backman is hands down one of my favorite authors. His characters are so alive and lovable. Ove is an older man dealing with loss. Although he wants to be a curmudgeon he is really a begrudging hero seemingly w/o even realizing the impact he has on the lives of those around him. This book gives you all the feels.

This was my first Jenny Lawson book, and what can I say? I LOVE HER! This book was a hilarious and uplifting look about what can sometimes be a dark topic; mental illness. Jenny ruminates on her personal experiences with mental illness and it kind of makes you want to be crazy too. But under it all there is the message to live life joyously no matter what life throws at you. Because w/o those hurdles, life might be easier, but not better.

Petty Moshen is a"bad ass" 22 year old girl who has never been more than a few miles from her home in rural Kansas. Then her father dies leaving her to decide whether she will follow the terms of his will (which gets her $1M) or whether she will uncover the mystery of her past. This was a great book that kept you guessing with engaging characters that had you rooting for them to the very end.

The book was very thought provoking. Although written about slavery and one particular slave's attempt to find freedom, one cannot help but see the echoes of those struggle continuing in our lives today. A powerful reminder that only in helping the weakest among us can we be strong and that to ignore or support racism or segregation is any form is truly evil.

After years, perhaps decades, of intense drought, the states of these United States are essentially at war with each other over water rights. Water knives are the nefarious individuals that work for certain state govs (NV and CA) to cut off the rights of other state. This story is about one knife (Angel), a journalist documenting the desiccation of Phoenix, and the lengths we'll go to in order to survive.

A book about a painting and its origin. The story follows two timeframes: the discovery of the painting (late 60s) and the creation of the painting (about mid 1930s). The book is part romance, part art, part mystery and overall an enjoyable read.

I loved this book! A story about two Native American families intertwined by a tragedy and that tragedy's effects on both the adults and the children. An interesting look into family dynamics where kids can often become caretakers and love and support sometimes come from unlikely places. Although a tragedy starts this book, it wasn't all sad and I found it to be touching and uplifting.

A honeymoon, mermaids, and murder! There was a lot going on in this book, which wants to pass itself off for a light, comical murder mystery. It was a quick read, with a fun group of characters, but it took me awhile to get thru because it just didn't hold my interest. The author threw in some very dark issues regarding environmental exploitation and destruction, which definitely dampened the frivolity of the story.
