Sourdough | Robin Sloan
In his much-anticipated new novel, Robin Sloan does for the world of food what he did for the world of books in Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour BookstoreLois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers close up shop, and fast. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her--feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it. Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she's providing loaves daily to the General Dexterity cafeteria. The company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer's market, and a whole new world opens up. When Lois comes before the jury that decides who sells what at Bay Area markets, she encounters a close-knit club with no appetite for new members. But then, an alternative emerges: a secret market that aims to fuse food and technology. But who are these people, exactly? Leavened by the same infectious intelligence that made Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore such a sensation, while taking on even more satisfying challenges, Sourdough marks the triumphant return of a unique and beloved young writer.

Right now, I need books about people who are in transition and learning about themselves. This book was great for that. Not to mention all the bread talk. Perfect for anyone who, at times, feels a little disenchanted by the monotony of technology, but still appreciates innovation.

mom2bugnbee I really enjoyed this one! Have you read? 2mo
ShyBookOwl @mom2bugnbee I haven't but I'm considering it very soon! Does it also have a touch of magical realism? 2mo
mom2bugnbee Yes! Magical realism is my favorite genre. I liked Mr. P even more than Sourdough (same author). 2mo

ShyBookOwl @mom2bugnbee awesome! I haven't read much magical realism, but I've been meaning to. I picked up on it in Sourdough and it was a nice surprise. 2mo
stephothebesto Stacked! I like that theme - if you're looking for more, Hammerhead is nonfiction, Record of a Spaceborn Few is sci-fi, and you miiiight like Free Food for Millionaires, but I know some people found it frustrating. 2mo
ShyBookOwl @stephothebesto thanks for the recs! Does it matter that Record of a Spaceborn Few is third in a series? Do I need to read the first 2 to get it? 2mo
stephothebesto No, I recommend all 3 because they're delightful, but they're only loosely connected. It's more like a bonus when you recognize a past character who's casually mentioned; you won't be behind with plot or anything. 2mo
ShyBookOwl @stephothebesto good to know :) 2mo

I‘m listening to Sourdough as a reread for #LitsyBookClub this month. As someone who has baked with sourdough for many years, the early portion includes a fun but unrealistic story of learning to bake. I can‘t imagine anyone being so successful so fast! While listening, I‘m enjoying a supper of fresh cucumbers and a baked potato from the garden with roast beef on a sourdough roll.

#audiobook #ReadandEat #reread

sammisho This book definitely gave me unrealistic expectations! 4mo
Daisey @sammisho 😂 I think I read it so quickly the first time and was amused enough that I didn‘t really stop to think about just how unbelievably amazing her baking was from the start. I remember noticing it but not like I did today. Perfect loaves in a homemade wood fire brick oven on the first try and multiple loaves a week when she had never baked in her life is ridiculous! 4mo

I don‘t know how Robin Sloan pulled this off but he somehow made a book about sourdough weirdly entertaining. Lois works at a high tech company in San Francisco and is given sourdough starter by acquaintances who need to leave the country. The sourdough starter takes on a life of its own and is a character unto itself. It was a fun read and left me hankering for some bread!

DebinHawaii I really enjoyed this one! 6mo

I experienced a similar development of feeling with Sourdough as with Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookshop. At first I found the quirkiness charming and the interplay of tradition (books or baking) and high technology intriguing, but as the story went on it failed to add depth and once the initial novelty had worn off it became ephemeral and irritating like a vague itch.

LeahBergen What a great way of describing the moment when tepid interest turns to irritation. 👏🏻 6mo
saresmoore I felt much the same about this book. The annoying fizzle is both one of my pet peeves as a reader and one of my greatest fears as a writer. 6mo

I enjoyed Lois, the MC, and her adventures in and around San Francisco. Since I live in the city, I understood and appreciated all the landmarks as well as Tech start-up pains she was going through. However, the book lost me during the second half of the story. I liked that it was kind-of weird and creative, but the plot felt forced. I got a bored at the end and had to make myself finish.

A tech geek programming robots in San Francisco learns to overcome her social awkwardness when she‘s entrusted with a crock of unusual sourdough starter. All of the foodie content, not to mention the magical microbes, put this satirical romp directly in my wheelhouse. This was quirky & endearing and it made me crave soup & sourdough. Just as in Mr. Penumbra, it has a semi-fantastical element to it that in the end, takes the novel completely off the rails before Sloan reins it in with a quick resolution. But I liked it anyway! There were a few threads that seemed either unnecessary or underdeveloped (the Lois Club being the prime example), but overall I enjoyed this. Another solid pick for #NewYearWhoDis!

BarbaraJean I started this on audio, and finished it up in print over the weekend. And I do have to say that I wish the audio narrator had done her homework on how to pronounce a few place names (mispronunciation is one of my big audio pet peeves!), but other than that, the audio was good as well. (edited) 10mo
