Before She Knew Him
Before She Knew Him: A Novel | Peter Swanson
132 posts | 102 read | 3 reading | 96 to read
Catching a killer is dangerousespecially if he lives next door From the hugely talented author of The Kind Worth Killing comes an exquisitely chilling tale of a young suburban wife with a history of psychological instability whose fears about her new neighbor could lead them both to murder . . . Hen and her husband Lloyd have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby, and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, shes found some stability and peace. But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husbands office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago. Hen knows because shes long had a fascination with this unsolved murderan obsession she doesnt talk about anymore, but cant fully shake either. Could her neighbor, Matthew, be a killer? Or is this the beginning of another psychotic episode like the one she suffered back in college, when she became so consumed with proving a fellow student guilty that she ended up hurting a classmate? The more Hen observes Matthew, the more she suspects hes planning something truly terrifying. Yet no one will believe her. Then one night, when she comes face to face with Matthew in a dark parking lot, she realizes that he knows shes been watching him, that shes really on to him. And that this is the beginning of a horrifying nightmare she may not live to escape. . .

This one was a bit slow for me to start. But I like the early reveal and thought I had it figured out, but not quite. So a great twist for me and a solid finish. Plus when you get a little #ssdgm and #fuckpoliteness you can‘t go wrong go for me.

#CurrentlyReading a release from this year that I snagged at the local used book shop. Not too far in, since I only started it at nap time & wouldn't you know... she napped maybe 45 min today 😑 Trying to get a thriller in since I've been doing an awful job of reading as much as I wanted to this month. I'm dragging at this point. Also getting a cold right before the Celtic Festival. Never fails. Wait all year for an event, get sick. That's life 😂

Between so-so & a pick. Some clunky writing, & Hen never seemed like a fully fleshed-out MC. Some reveals were too convenient, like Hen's prior behavior, or unnecessary. The first reveal felt too early. I enjoyed the psychotic on full display, but have tired of the unreliable mentally ill MC trope. Still unsure if the main twist was well done or gimmicky. But overall this was a fast, entertaining serial killer read that kept me wanting more! 3⭐️s

This is my 4th Peter Swanson and I‘m usually a fan. Not sure yet on this one though.

I read so many "psychological thrillers", many of which are utterly unbelievable or completely forgettable. This is not the case here!! I found this one to be riveting and well put together. I don't want to say too much about the plot but it did keep me guessing and entertained the whole way through! #audiobook #libby also just realized I could use the hashtag #recommendsday ?

This was a fairly dark and disturbing book. The kind that gets under your skin and stays there long after you‘ve turned the final page. If you have read any other reviews for this book you already know that there is a big twist coming & while I did see the twist coming fairly early it didn‘t deter how enjoyable it was for me at all.

Peter Swanson‘s psychological thriller plays with the reliability of characters and how their psychological disorders can be used against them and how people choose not to see what‘s in front of them. However, the book suffers from making its key reveal too early and by making the twist in the ending too obvious so that overall, it just doesn‘t rise above its parts to become a satisfying read.

Whoa!

I started this book this afternoon and, other than a brief break for dinner, read it straight through to the end. I was so absorbed that I didn‘t have any idea what time it was. It could have been 9:00 or 2:00 in the morning! This book is laid out in a fascinating way. You think you know everything pretty early on but trust me, you do not. I‘m going to be turning this one over in my mind for a while.

(Eeeeep! It‘s giving me the shivers!)

Pruzy So great to hear you had such a good reading experience! It‘s feelings like that which make me hungry to find my next great read. 4mo

This one was good, but not great. It was a quick and enjoyable read, but I figured it out quite early. Trust me when I tell you that I almost never figure out twists in books and movies. I kept hoping for more or that I was wrong, but I wasn‘t.

marleed Yesterday I read the book, The Girl He Used to Know. It‘s completely unrelated to this book. But for some reason I can‘t keep the two titles straight in my head! 5mo

Meh. I figured out the big twist pretty early on and the only reason I finished the book was to prove myself right. I‘m not a fan of “mental illness = unreliable” plots and thought the story was beyond ridiculous. But it was a quick read and not excruciatingly written, so 👍🏼👍🏼.

This was a fun, fast paced summer thriller. It kept my interest, although I wouldn‘t rank it as high as Swanson‘s first two books. There‘s not much mystery—the reader pretty much finds out the major plot points immediately, but the psychological impact is more intricate and there was one twist that I didn‘t see coming at all!

This was just barely a pick for me. I loved "The Kind Worth Killing" by this author, so much so that I keep reading his other books. The first half of this one kind of read like 'one time at band camp' in that it seemed like the author was in a rush to get to writing the good part. The second half was better, more developed, but predictable. A good choice if you don't want to think too much about the mystery you're reading.

I thought that this was a little bit predictable which was a bit disappointing for me, but overall I really liked it. The story kept me interested until the end and I really liked the characters in this. Lots of twists and it was suspenseful. I enjoyed this thriller.

Tadams4 Such a wonderful review! 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Every time I read one of Swanson's books, I can barely put it down when I'm reading it. Then, when I'm finished, I realize that he actually used loads of coincidences and I didn't really like any of the characters and I kinda already knew how it was going to end... but when I'm actually reading them, they are sooo addictive! 7mo

2019 Book 21: well I‘m not quite sure how to review this book. I did like the plot twist. I have to say I didn‘t see that coming. The characters were creepy though, and I don‘t like the subject of torture, so that was a bit off-putting for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think this was my first Peter Swanson. Well-plotted thriller. Even if you guess the twist, the behavior of the characters holds true. 🎧 Sophie Amos & Graham Halstead do a really nice job narrating. Amos has the bulk of the #audiobook — good characterizations & pacing.
