Since I read a lot of "classics" over the last decade, it was easier to come up with a #ClassicsEdition of #Top10oftheDecade rather than a #FictionEdition: Revolutionary Road, Gone With the Wind, Anna Karenina, A Wrinkle in Time, To Kill a Mockingbird, Play It As It Lays, East of Eden, Fahrenheit 451, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and Rebecca. What are your favorite classics?
@Cinfhen

ljuliel Sounds great. I like how you put a Classics twist on it. I think people can make theirs however they want. You‘ve got some great ones on there. 1mo
BarbaraBB Strong choices! I loved most of them too! 1mo
batsy Nice! Like @ljuliel said I like the classics twist 👍🏽 1mo

This book is still so good. I haven't read it in years, but I remember devouring it the first time. This time I was struck by how much there actually is to it, and I took my time. It's interesting seeing which parts of our narrator I still identify with and which parts I don't, as well as which parts of the story are still suspenseful and which parts aren't. Glad I revisited this one.

rubyslippersreads I need to reread this favorite. 1mo
jmtrivera @rubyslippersreads It's definitely worth revisiting! 1mo

A very unexpected #VintageBook #BookHaul — Rebecca (pub 1946) and Jamaica Inn (pub 1966) — I really like both of these interesting and unusual covers. Sadly the copy of Rebecca has few loose pages but none are missing. The lady who gave them to me said they had been sitting on her bookshelf for over 50 years!

Rushed through the ending because this was due back in minutes. I wasn‘t able to wrap the ending up neatly. Am I dense? Too rushed? I think I‘ll watch the movie.

Lcsmcat It doesn‘t have a neatly wrapped up ending. That‘s part of its power, I think. 2mo

Bailedbailed

I take @ljuliel ‘s advice and bail on this. For the second time. 😟 Feels a bit bad – which is rubbish.

You know, I so much wanted to read and to like it but I was bored by it immediately. I think I‘m so impatient because I saw the film first and therefore know the plot. So I couldn‘t stop thinking: “Get going, c‘mon!”

Maybe gothic novels aren‘t for me. Years ago, I also was bored by “Jane Eyre” that I needed to read with my tutor student. 🙄

Liatrek I loved Rebecca the movie but also bailed half way through when trying to read the book. I was hoping to try and get back to it one day because I heard the ending is different from the movie. Jane Eyre is the opposite I loved both the book and movie. 2mo
ljuliel I didn‘t like Jane Eyre. Tried it dozens of times. Don‘t like it , I‘m not reading it. 😊. No worries. 2mo
? 2mo

Uhm, I started this one and I really like this beautiful edition. But I don‘t like the style the story is told. It‘s so dragging.

And I don‘t like Mr De Winter. Seems like Du Maurier copied Mr Rochester one on one – and Mr. Rochester I didn‘t like either (“I‘m so vulnerable but I don‘t talk but, oh, I‘m so vulnerable!”)

I‘m reluctant to bail on it. It‘s a classic‼️ So … But bailing is okay, isn‘t it❓

Help‼️
Support and encouragement needed.

ljuliel Do what‘s best for you. I really liked this book, but every book isn‘t for every person. Don‘t force yourself to read something that‘s just not clicking. Toss it. I‘d be willing to bet you have another book someplace in your house that you‘ll like more ! 2mo
Buechersuechtling @ljuliel You‘re such a sweetheart. The thing is: I _know_ that you‘re right (doesn‘t weigh that it‘s a classic, does it). I have so many unread books since I was gifted cast-off books – but that kind of puts me under pressure. Additionally, I‘m so critical with the books I chose at the moment that I‘m more listening to audiobooks. But I _want_ to _read_‼️ I _love_ the act of reading. I miss it. 2mo
ljuliel There are lots of Classics I‘ve read and really liked. Others, I didn‘t. I don‘t feel bad if I don‘t like a particular book that others do. We all have our own tastes. I understand also having many books waiting and feeling under pressure . I‘m the same way. If I have books in the house, I have to store them away someplace. If I see them sitting here, I feel like I have to hurry and read them. Nothing wrong with audiobooks. Maybe you‘re in a 👇🏼 2mo

ljuliel 👆🏼Reading slump. It‘ll pass. Just read however you can , and soon you‘ll be back to picking up a book and flipping the pages again, you‘ll see. 🙂 2mo
Ruthiella The Mr. Rodchester vibe is intentional I think...if you decide to continue there are other Jane Eyre homages, though I wouldn‘t say this is a retelling. It just has echoes of Jane Eyre. 😀 2mo
Deifio I agree with @ljuliel just atop if you don't like it. I used to think I have to finish every book I started. Not fun. Now I stop if I can't get into it after about 50-80 pages. A classic I couldn't finish was Frankenstein, I was too angry at Victor Frankenstein to continue 😅 2mo

It‘s so sad, but in a way I see it coming again, that I still don‘t have the patience and the calmness to start this today.

I would love to, but … Do you also know this❓🤔 Shortly after you‘ve gone back to work after some days off your mind at home is still unconsciously busy with office things so that you don‘t find the ease of mind to start what you consider a “demanding” read.

ljuliel Makes sense to me. I don‘t work, but if I have something on my mind, such as a problem or something I need to figure out , I can‘t concentrate as much on reading. Sometimes I can read a simple book that doesn‘t take a lot of concentration. Other times, I can‘t read anything. Depends on the day. 2mo

Please excuse this bad photo.

I found an edition of this classic where the line spacing seems less narrow. And of course I will give this classic another try.

Friends! I put this book on hold on January 30, and now it's mine 🎉🎉🎉🎉 (for 21 days, at least). I think library holds may be the only part of my life in which I have any patience at all.

This is a reread- read over winter break of my freshman year of high school (shizz, almost 30 years ago now)- the beginning of falling in love with some of the classics 💗

Can I just say, it is WILD how snobby the servants are in this book lol! I can't help but wonder if it's all just hyperbolic projection because of how insecure our protagonist is.

SW-T Servants expected their employers to conform to certain standard of gentility. It was a mark of status for them. 5mo

Not as intimidating as I thought it would be nor as "scary" as I had hoped, I liked it very much minus the epilogue. RaimeyGallant @MrBook That's one of my all-time dreams, to meet you and @BookBabe :) I'm in NYC July 17-27. Are you both in town? 7mo
umbrellagirl What an honor! Congratulations on your nomination. 7mo
bookandcat Congratulations!!! You'll be in my neck of the woods! 7mo
RaimeyGallant @bookandcat Are you around July 17-27? I'd love to meet some NYC Littens. 7mo
bookandcat @RaimeyGallant yes! I am technically a New Jersey kitten but I'll actually be in Manhattan proper with my friend on Friday July 19th for Epic Reads Day. Perhaps we can meet after I'm done with that event - it ends around 4, if I remember correctly. On a side note I'm also happy to give you recs for food/shows/fun NYC things etc if you need! (I highly recommend going to The Strand!) 7mo
bookandcat @RaimeyGallant Litten. Autocorrect 😂😂😂 I may be bookandcat but not THAT much. 7mo
Graywacke Fantastic news! Congrats! 7mo
RaimeyGallant @bookandcat Omg, I just spent the last 10 minutes checking out Epic Reads, but it's sold out! That would have been so much fun! I'm totally free on the 19th though and would love to meet up. Anyone else in NYC interested? @BookBabe @MrBook Who else lives there lol? With respect to recs, @bookandcat , I'm def going to The Strand. I'm in the midst of planning a self-guided literary tour, location scouting for my next plot. Any high-priority (1 of 2) 7mo
RaimeyGallant @bookandcat (2 of 2) literary-ish spots you can think of? I've secured tours of a few private/members only libraries already. And I'm going to try to hit Moth Story Slam, some bookstores, NYPL, maybe a few bars/pubs/restaurants that used to be literary hangouts. I'm actually going to a day-long workshop for authors at the FBI, which should be pretty cool, too. :) 7mo
bookandcat @RaimeyGallant def check out the Morgan Library! They have an AMAZING collection (read: Gutenberg bibles. Yes, multiple.) And I *think* you can visit without paying to get into the rest of the museum (I might be wrong). And I also like The Cloisters - very atmospheric. 7mo
MrBook @RaimeyGallant Sounds like you‘re making a fantastic itinerary 😁👏🏻! I can‘t speak for BookBabe since we‘ve separated *sniffles*, but I will definitely be around then. My book club meets July 21st 2-4. (Feel free to join! 😎🙌🏻 Amor Towles‘s “Rules for Civility” is that month‘s selection.) We could make a day of it, if you‘d like. I love showing friends around my old stomping grounds. Email me and I‘ll get you a list of landmarks & such. 👍🏻 7mo
RaimeyGallant @MrBook Definitely stuck my foot in it. Hugs to you both. July 21 sounds fun, but let me check if I have it free. My eyelids are droopy, so I'll get back to you tomorrow. 7mo
AnansiGirl How exciting for you! Congratulations on being a Daphne du Maurier finalist! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7mo
MrBook @RaimeyGallant All good 🤗. 7mo

I don‘t understand the hype. Read about 1/3 of the book and was bored out of my mind. No one had done anything remotely sinister or even interesting.

I‘m finally reading this #classic novel of romantic suspense. It‘s so good! Also though, I haven‘t read a mass market paperback in awhile and the print is too tiny. My poor 👀.

SitsWithaBook I would love to reread this one. 8mo

1) My sister's Twentieth Century Classics edition of Rebecca. The cover has lost its gleam, the spine is tattered, but it's one of the first books that made me want to write and made me understand what reading can do and whenever I look at the yellowed pages I'm transported back to the time when I read it for the first time.
2) Scarlett, the sequel to Gone with the Wind 😬
3) S'mores!
