Galore: A novel | Michael Crummey
17 posts | 18 read | 71 to read
Sprawling and intimate, stark and fantastical, Galore is a novel about the power of stories to shape and sustain us. This is Michael Crummeys most ambitious and accomplished work to date. An intricate family saga and love story spanning two centuries, Galore is a portrait of the improbable medieval world that was rural Newfoundland, a place almost too harrowing and extravagant to be real. Remote and isolated, exposed to savage extremes of climate and fate, the people of Paradise Deep persist in a realm where the line between the everyday and the otherworldly is impossible to distinguish. Propelled by the disputes and alliances, grievances and trade-offs that bind the Sellers and Devine families through generations, Galore is alive with singular characters, and an uncommon insight into the complexities of human nature. From the Hardcover edition.

I'm posting one book per day from the ever growing unread stacks in my personal library. No description or explanation, just books I own and plan to read. #tbr

Sweeping multigenerational historical novel with more than a touch of fairy tale. The scope reminded me of Barkskins. Highly readable. 3.5 🌟

I went to my annual reader appreciation weekend again at the end of April. I came home with 33 books, only 12 of which I paid for, averaging $7 a book. If you're near Milwaukee and enjoy romance/suspense check it out.

Sometimes the best reads are books randomly picked up at the library. So glad I decided to take it home with me! A mixture of historical fiction and magical realism, it really fit into what I was looking to read. Crummey makes this book flow in a way that I have never read before. Years pass between sentences and generations pass quickly before your eyes. I found it very hard to put this book down. #2013 #Canadian

Thanks for the tag @rohit-sawant ! Here are my #10AuthorRecommendations 😊

I'd love to see what recommendations @ReadingEnvy @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Redheadrambles @shawnmooney would suggest! 🙋🏼Tag! As well as everyone else of course 😘

BarbaraBB Thanks for the tag. Great question. I‘ll have to think about that a little! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks for the tag...I need to think about this as well🤓 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane cool thank you I have many ideas 💡 7y

Marchpane @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Redheadrambles Yay, I look forward to seeing them 😘 Doesn't have to be your definitive *top* ten, that's too agonising to deliberate over 😂 7y
RohitSawant Oh, that's a fantastic list! So many I haven't checked out yet. I've especially been meaning to read Ted Chiang and Toni Morrison for awhile now. 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane also i have not forgotten this Buddy Read idea - I am hoping it might check a box in next years Read Harder but if not I am still keen to get to it next year. 7y
Marchpane @Redheadrambles Awesome! I am thinking next year I will focus more on readalong/buddy read type things, and less on structured challenges of the "read a book from X genre" type. But who knows! 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane yes I don‘t like to feel too constricted in my reading but it‘s been super fun doing Read Harder with @ClairesReads as we compare notes discuss options. However I think when I do manage to read a book at the same time as someone else - this is a great place to send out little missives of “OMG I love this e.t.c ( or not as the case maybe ) 😀 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles @Marchpane yes #readharder is super fun when someone else is doing it too...we did manage to read one pick the same this year but not quite at the same time! Buddy read goals next year for sure! 7y
FountainBookstore I love this list. Ted Chiang. Nice. 7y

I have so many books with #deckleedge that I can't put them all in one photo. To be honest, I grew up calling these French-cut pages. I had no idea there was an actual English term.

monkeygirlsmama I didn't know the term until yesterday when I looked it up for the prompt. I've always loved books with pages like this though. 7y
Octoberwoman I'd never heard that term before! Love it! 7y
drokka @Octoberwoman I think we called it that because we thought only French novels had them. In fairness, I didn't read any novels in other languages until secondary school. But even in French it's not called 'French-cut, so I reckon my gran made it up. 7y

#Booktober #Day26 #Rereads -- apart from classic lit., I very rarely reread books, though I do keep books I love with the intention of reading them again. Michael Crummey's Galore is quite the exception for me. I think I have read it 5 times since it published. Dang, I love this book!!! Hard!! 😀📚❤️

Booktrovert This book can also double for #RecommendsDay - I truly push it on everyone. 😋 7y

People, you need to read Canadian author Michael Crummey! He's a native of Newfoundland, which is where his books are set. His stories are so alive and his characters so real you feel like you live among them. See also Sweetland and River Thieves. #CanLit #Newfoundland

For #recommendsday . I found myself completely suspending disbelief, and plunging headlong into the world of early Newfoundland. The characters complex in their seeming simplicity. Love, folkways, tragedy, history all make for the best sort of storytelling.
