A Sin by Any Other Name | Robert W. Lee
post image
Panpan

I wanted to like this book more. As a Christian, I appreciate Christian leaders speaking out against racism. For me, this book still made those very subtle Southern excuses and even though many Southern Christians found it offensive, I don‘t think the message is strong enough. Jesus overturned tables and this is more like a pleading “come on guys we shouldn‘t still be doing this.” 👇🏻

megnews And as I‘ve said about other similar books, doubtful it will be picked up by those who need to hear the message. 9h
Tamra I often think the same about many things I see or read - message is lost on those who need it most. 8h

I‘ve never been able to tolerate romance so why am I actually enjoying both of these?

AmyG Hahahahaha. I said that when I was reading Abby Jimenez. 3d
KadaGul @AmyG Abby, I enjoy reading Abby Jimenez's stories because she focuses on mental health rather than just the typical soapy romance. It adds such depth to her writing! (edited) 3d
marleed Once I had the time and space to read the amount that I do now I added in romance to break up my genres. The tropes drive me crazy, I can handle a certain amount of spice but smut really isn‘t my thing 😳 - other than that I‘ve learned to like it and several romance writers are now auto read for me. 2d

Reggie Because they guarantee a happy ending and right now the world feels like it‘s on fire. I read 5 Abby Jimenez books in February and I was soo happy and high spirited. It was nice. 2d
megnews @Reggie I think you‘re right. I think it‘s the same reason I‘m reading more middle grade right now. Even when it‘s broaching tough topics, kids are naturally more optimistic and I for one need to borrow someone else‘s optimism right now. 2d
megnews @AmyG @KadaGul thanks for the recommendations! I‘ll check her out next. 2d
Roary47 Ooo I love the meant to be series! 😍 I‘m on the tangled one. Just haven‘t had a good sit down time to enjoy it. 2d

If, like me, your reading style started out as Babysitters Club and morphed into historical fiction, this middle grade series is for you. This seems to be a sleeper by Ann M Martin, of Babysitters Club fame. Following a family tree from the depression, Kennedy‘s assassination, on through 9/11, Martin tackles tough family topics such as mental illness, disability, and alcoholism in a straightforward but gentle way.

I‘m scratching my head to be the first to review this gem. Daisy Buchanan reminds us of falling in love with reading, how it shapes our lives and helps us through difficulties. Warning: May implode your TBR

I haven‘t been doing many individual book reviews lately but it always comes as a surprise to me when I‘m the first to post about a book so I couldn‘t let the opportunity pass me by. All middle graders will enjoy this adventurous series, particularly reluctant male readers who prefer the outdoors, camping, hiking, fishing, dogs etc. (Of note: abusive stepdad). Adults who enjoy a good road trip or nature read will also enjoy this series.

Earlier this year I listened to the author‘s 2 hour abridged presentation of this book but I had to own an unabridged copy. I am only 16 pages in but feel confident in saying every woman should own, read and gift this book. I‘m soaking up every word. It‘s just what I needed on the tail end of a year and a half depression. I know I will be gifting this to both my daughters.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I have edited this caption multiple times at a loss for the words I want to say. I am sorry to get religious and political here but I feel I have to speak up. I will leave it at this: I am an evangelical Christian fundamentalist. And my heart breaks daily that these sentiments from the mid 1850s are still true. Love your neighbor as your self. Love. Love. Love! Please!

I can‘t believe I‘m the first to post about this book! Im not a huge nonfiction reader but I‘m a third of the way through and it‘s been fascinating stuff we don‘t learn in school. There is a BBC mini series on YouTube too. #firstlinefridays

A little late. I got 14. 3 favs are the tagged which I read sooo many times, Bud not Buddy, and The Westing Game which I also read many times. 3 I think should have been in there (so hard to choose): Elijah of Buxton, Jefferson‘s Sons, The War that Saved my Life. But there‘s so many. 1 I want to read: Walk Two Moons because it was my daughter‘s fav when she was young. #tlt

dabbe LOVE your choices! WALK TWO MOONS is a fave of mine, too! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🖤🩶 5mo

I‘m a week late but here it is. This was between a pick and a so so for me as most of my December holiday reads are because it‘s the only time of year I read fluffy romance. I‘d rate this a little better than many because I did like the incorporation of all 3 holidays. #sundayfunday

Kenyazero I didn't see myself as a reader as a kid because I struggled with reading, but I liked reading Garfield comics (which I knew teachers and librarians were not impressed by) and eventually graduated to Sailor Moon manga from there, and then other manga. These items helped me figure out how my brain reads. I'm sure reading copious amounts of fanfics as a teen also helped 🤭 I started finding experiences I related to in these nontraditional reads. 7mo
megnews @Kenyazero that‘s great! I think it‘s a shame when comics aren‘t considered reading. I have 2 daughters that are readers but my son had a lot of difficulty and I was happy when he read car magazines! 7mo
