Three Holidays and a Wedding
Three Holidays and a Wedding | Marissa Stapley, Uzma Jalaluddin
From two bestselling Canadian authors comes a multi-faith holiday rom-com about the delightful havoc that occurs when Christmas, Ramadan, and Hanukkah all fall at the same time, and two strangers-turned-friends are snowbound in the small, charming town of Snow Falls along with the cast and crew of a holiday romance movie, nosy family members, and their lifelong crushes. Three times the holiday magic. Three times the chaos. As strangers and seatmates Maryam Aziz and Anna Gibson fly to Toronto over the holidaysMaryam to her sisters impromptu wedding, and Anna to meet her boyfriends wealthy family for the first timeneither expect that severe turbulence will scare them into confessing their deepest hopes and fears to one another. At least theyll never see each other again. And the love of Maryams life, Saif, wasnt sitting two rows behind them hearing it all. Oops. An emergency landing finds Anna, Saif, Maryam, and her sisters entire bridal party snowbound at the quirky Snow Falls Inn in a picture-perfect town, where fate has Annas actor-crush filming a holiday romance. As Maryam finds the courage to open her heart to Saif, and Anna feels the magic of being snowbound with an unexpected new loveboth women soon realize theres no place theyd rather be for the holidays.

Last night‘s treelight read got off to a great start! I wish the authors didn‘t explain most every reference, but I like the characters and the stranded plane scenario. I‘m about to dive in and see how things go for them now they‘ve arrived in this little Christmassy town!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I just finished this book, loved it! I've read Uzma Jalaluddin's other books and they always have a bit of explanations for Muslim concepts, which irks me too. It must be so weird for Muslim readers, and like, the rest of us can look it up? She seems like a very smart author, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a thing her editors make her do to be "accessible" or whatever ? 2w
xicanti @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I was thinking the same thing. If it‘s a term I don‘t know, I can either figure it out by context or google it, but I guess editors expect readers to get super grumpy and give up if they have to put things together. Blah. 1w

Is the premise of this tri-holiday rom com totally unrealistic? Yes. Did I love it anyway? Yes. Uzma Jalaluddin is wonderful, as usual, but I was surprised to be just as interested in the other storyline by Marissa Stapley. Lighthearted holiday fun!! Funny jokes too, including an anachronistic nod to the characters of Frozen, even though the novel is set in 2000. Majestically performed by Ulka Simone Mohanty, a fellow Canadian like the authors!

I loved this book! Maryam and her family are traveling to Toronto for her sister's wedding, and Anna is traveling to Toronto to meet her boyfriend's family and spend Christmas with them. They're on the same flight, and a blizzard causes them to have to land in Snow Falls, instead. Stuck for who knows how long before flights can get out again, Maryam and Anna reevaluate what's really important to them.

Lots of love for this touching and fun multi-holiday story. I totally recommend it! The complex family relationships, the new friendship between the two women, and the budding romances were all believable and richly portrayed. Above all, I wish this town existed in real life because it seems perfect! 💗

Don‘t you just love when a book speaks to you at the right moment? My #November pick did that for me. Romance, yes, but also deeper - broken people looking for their own type of happiness. I devoured this one. Also, the inclusivity of various religious celebrations during the holiday season was perfection. #12BooksOf2023

My top read this year is pretty different for me. If you had told me that my favorite book this year was a romance I would have assumed you meant one of the Heartstopper or Lore Olympus graphic novels and not an actual novel. But here we are, my favorite book this year was Three Holidays and a Wedding. I'm looking forward to reading my top 2024 book! What will it be? Who knows?

If you like improbable Hallmark Christmas movies, this is the book for you.
When their flight to Toronto is diverted to the Christmas-loving small Canadian town of Snow Falls, strangers Maryam and Anna become friends, tackle challenges- big and small, and fall in love with two lucky men.
I think I would‘ve liked it more if it was just Maryam‘s story as I found Anna and Josh a bit annoying, but that might‘ve been an audiobook issue.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This was set in the year 2000 - a rare year when Christmas, Hanukkah, and Ramadan all overlapped. I liked learning about the different holidays and cultures. The story probably won‘t stick with me, but it was an enjoyable, inclusive holiday story that reminds us we‘re more alike than we are different. 🎧

I liked the multi faith component a lot. I disliked some of the miscommunication tropes, but these stayed true to real life. I enjoyed the fact that there were so many moving parts. And mostly, I love how much it reinforces the idea that there is no war on Christmas....all faiths can wish each other blessings for the season no matter which holiday they celebrate in their faith.

I enjoyed a lot of this: Maryam and Anna's friendship, M's grandfather, the inclusion of all 3 holidays, the cutesy town. But I also felt like TOO MUCH was packed into this story. And some things were too unbelievable: their plane was diverted and they ended up stuck for an entire week?? 3 days before Christmas the town still doesn't have a story or set design for the holiday play?? There's a Hollywood Christmas movie being filmed AT CHRISTMAS??⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ For me the best part was the friendships (I thought the romances fell flat) & I liked both M&A making some important life changes. There were a zillion characters but they weren't hard to keep track of. The town was too good to be true, in an impossible to believe way. And Josh putting a "yule log shaped cake" in to bake had me laughing in a really annoyed way. ? Sorry for the crazy review I realize I've jumbled the good & bad parts together. 12mo

This was my first romance novel and it was an awesome one! I enjoyed learning about Hanukkah and Ramadan/Eid. I especially enjoyed the food references. I've seen a decent number of Hallmark movies and this felt like a Hallmark movie, but in novel form (with significantly better writing). This was a great read and it's great for #wintergames points (12,825 points!). I look forward to reading more romance in the future. Any recs?

This is another one straight out of the Hallmark Movie Plot Factory, so it's filled with people on the cusp of big life decisions, old crushes reuniting, celebrity falls for "regular girl," and above all, the miscommunication trope in abundance. But like the good Hallmark movies, it's charming & lovely. I loved the representation in this of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim practices and their holidays. This post catches me up posting finished books.

I hope it gets made into a Christmas movie ❤️ I remember that storm of the century, we got a snow day on the Friday before school ended for the break, I didn‘t remember that it was a holiday trifecta - I wish for the world‘s sake that happened more often, maybe that would help some see the similarities we have instead of always the differences ( new mug ❤️ fits me perfectly 😉)

What I didn‘t like is one characters quick rebound, and some of the drama was a little too scripted. #LittensLoveRomance Ch.17-18: so happy for Anna and Josh (although the baker in me mourns the Yule log cake). I think they make a very sweet couple. Now for Maryam and Saif - I do hope her grand gesture works on him. They too are very sweet together. I love how everything is coming together. But honestly - Saima saying she was doing her rush wedding For Maryam - 🙄! So glad Maryam called her out on that one haha! We‘ll finish tomorrow!

mcctrish Well Maryam is stubborn and needed a swift kick to get her out of her rut. People could have just solved their own problems though 😆 12mo
CogsOfEncouragement Agreed, the ruined dessert was a huge disappointment. I think maybe Saima was lying to herself a little bit. Glad Maryam was direct and firm with her. Much better for everyone. Saif the hero! Looking forward to a happy conclusion. 12mo

vonnie862 I rolled my eyes when Saima said she did it for Maryam. So glad Maryam called her out on it. Now I want to see how Saif is going to react to Maryam's grand gesture. 12mo
OriginalCyn620 I agree that Maryam needed a nudge to break out of her rut, but I thought Saima‘s excuse that she rushed her wedding for Maryam‘s own good was ridiculous. I‘m an only child, though, so take that with a grain of salt! But rushing into a marriage because of your sister seems a tad crazy. 12mo
julesG Shame about the cake, but I liked Josh's grand gesture. And I only just realised his real last name is the German word for a fir tree 🌲 - is it a sign? 😉 I nearly sprained an eye from 🙄🙄🙄 at Saima's excuse/explanation. 12mo
Roary47 I‘m also excited for that grand gesture. My sister has been married 3 times. Each time was a rush, and during her second divorce she urged me not to get married to my bf of 5 years 🙄 @OriginalCyn620 you are not missing at least this in sisterly love. 🤣 I‘m so happy for Anna and Josh, but glad they will try to take it slow. I‘m not too happy about the re-bound idea though. Josh is awesome and Nick was obviously not. 12mo

Three different holidays come together in this great festive read. Maryam and Anna meet on a plane headed to Toronto. The plane is diverted to Snowy Falls - a friendly yet quirky town. Anna and Maryam‘s family are stranded and the two women soon share secrets and fears. To add to the chaos, a movie is being filmed in the town with a charismatic movie star as the lead. There is so much going on with this book I flew through it. A great read 🎄

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.15: what a proposal! I‘m glad in this case the author never made Nick likeable. He really was just a bad choice from the beginning. I wonder if Josh heard anything Anna said? She was just backstage - it‘s possible they were not as private as they thought. I‘m also glad Anna finally read Beth‘s letter. Now she‘ll realize she‘s not alone after all. ⬇️

StayCurious Ch.16: oh Maryam, be brave! Poor Saif had better be patient. She‘s a tough nut to crack. I‘m glad we got to know Saif and Maryam a bit more in this chapter. But Maryam needs to take the plunge. Also, Saima has clearly gone after that plane! 12mo

mcctrish Oh Nick, he needs to spend some of his money on therapy 😝 thank goodness Anna read the letter and sees the light - no Nick, new job, hopefully, and an extended family to get to know - maybe a Josh when she‘s ready. Maryam needs to have a big moment now too 12mo
OriginalCyn620 @willaful I‘m so glad you were right about the letter too! It was very touching! 12mo
vonnie862 Good riddance to Nick! Now Anna needs to find the courage to see her stepmom again. And ooh, Maryam and Saif!!! 12mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.13. Whoa so much to unpack in this eventful and emotional chapter! First, can we agree that Saima - although she has a right to be upset about some things - is also acting like a spoiled brat. How dare she blame Maryam! “We should have stayed at the airport” - for what? 3 days? And poor Anna needs to show some gumption and stand up to Nick. He‘s such a steamroller.⬇️

StayCurious She needs to clear things up with Josh and tell him he‘s who she wants. Ch.14: I loved that Josh opened up to Maryam and showed how much he cares for Anna. I hope he can be as honest with Anna herself! Just show her she doesn‘t need Nick in her life! And I‘m glad that Maryam opened up to her parents. Maybe she can start to heal now. 12mo
mcctrish I thought it was next level sass that Josh thinks he has the right to feel hurt by the fact Anna had/has a boyfriend when he is in the press for dating Tenisha - he might need to be patient B/c Anna is going to need some time to solve the Nick problem 12mo

vonnie862 @mcctrish I agree. Anna needs time to solve her issue with Nick. I really hope she doesn't get in that plane. Also, I wanted to punch Nick when he told Anna that he doesn't "accept" her decision to take a break. What the... 12mo
CogsOfEncouragement Soooo - Maryam‘s fam is going to use Nick‘s jet, right? Then Maryam and Anna will see the holiday play to fruition with Saif and Josh. Yes? 12mo

vonnie862 @CogsOfEncouragement I like your thinking. 12mo
mcctrish I think Maryam‘s family using the plane is perfect @CogsOfEncouragement 🙏🏻 and no Anna 👏🏻👏🏻 12mo
OriginalCyn620 @CogsOfEncouragement Oh yes, that would be great! At any rate, Anna should not get on the plane. Clearly, Nick doesn‘t listen to her, like ever! And he didn‘t even ask, he just laid down the law and told her what was going to happen. Not cool! 12mo
willaful I got mixed up and didn't read the chapters til tonight, which turned out to be kind of perfect for the first night of Hannukah. 💛

Love your graphic choice, @StayCurious !

TheAromaofBooks Sheesh, what is Saima's deal?! If she and her man are meant to be together, why does a wedding delay of a few days make things such a disaster??? I am still thinking that she may be pregnant and trying to get this wedding wrapped up before anyone finds out. 12mo
TheAromaofBooks I will say, I met my husband out of the clear blue (not even a friend of a friend kind of thing, like 100% total stranger) and then we got married three months later, and that was over 13 years ago. So I actually do think it's possible, especially for adults who know what direction they want their lives to go, to meet someone and know pretty quickly if they're “the one“ or not. So I'm not actually inherently against Saima's desire to get ⬇ 12mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) married quickly, but there is NO excuse for the way she's treating her sister. 12mo
Lin3han @TheAromaofBooks I didn‘t think of her being pregnant but now it makes SO MUCH SENSE 12mo
TheAromaofBooks @Lin3han - I mostly wonder because it seems like that would be something her family/community would consider somewhat shameful/embarrassing. Then if they get married fast enough they could fudge the timeline a little lol But it's just a theory. 12mo
Roary47 @vonnie862 I thought the same thing about Nick “Not accepting” their break. @OriginalCyn620 Nick just wants what‘s best for him and I hope Anna sees that soon to completely break it off. I‘m still with @TheAromaofBooks Saima is way too emotional. Sure be upset, but why does it need to be Maryam‘s fault. Most likely pregnant and she‘s trying to hide the shame of it. 12mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.11: is Maryam divorced do you think? That would explain a lot of her caution and that of her parents‘. I wonder what the story is there. No wonder she puts so much pressure on herself to please her family. I love how Anna and Josh are with each other. I hope she‘s not too cautious. I think that might drive him away.

Ch.12: oof. We‘ve got some obstacles in the way for both Anna and Maryam. ⬇️

StayCurious A lot of it is them standing in their own way. Girls got some issues. But don‘t we all. I think Josh was kissing Tenisha because they were working on a scene. He was flubbing his lines all day and she was probably trying to get him back on track. It‘s not great but it‘s the business. As for Maryam, she really is letting her past dictate her present. She should learn something from writing her Christmas carol play. 13mo
mcctrish I think the practicing kissing on their own time is lazy story plot nonsense but I am also sure that is actually what is happening. 🤮 I feel extra bad for Maryam 13mo

keys_on_fire My favorite part of the whole two chapters was the sentence: Lucky trees! 13mo
vonnie862 Yeah, it's that whole misunderstanding trope here. 13mo
Roary47 Oh man didn‘t read any comments. I‘ll catch up and check back. I just need to grade one more classes Science Fairs (37) then I should be able to physically read again. 🫣 13mo
willaful Saif took Maryam's nasty comments very well. It would be nice if they weren't *both* separated by dumb misunderstandings... 13mo
julesG @mcctrish I agree that was an unnecessary scene. 13mo
mcctrish @Roary47 I hope your marking goes swiftly ( too much going on in December to have to add that to the mix 😆😣) 13mo
OriginalCyn620 I figured that Maryam was probably done wrong romantically, which is why she‘s acting that way towards Saif. I‘d love to know more details about that but I definitely think she‘s letting the past dictate the present. As far as Josh and Tenisha, I bet they‘re not really in a relationship…I think it‘s a PR stunt orchestrated by their “people.” That actually does happen in the entertainment industry, so that‘s my guess. 13mo
StayCurious @OriginalCyn620 especially with the paparazzo who was around to take their picture when they were holding hands 12mo
Roary47 @mcctrish Right?! I finished everyone‘s first draft and there are 7 kids that made corrections. The good news is I caught up to here! @vonnie862 I agree with the misunderstanding happening in these chapters. The kissing I also think is just to add some drama. I agree with @OriginalCyn620 I think she was in a bad relationship, but hopefully didn‘t go as far as marriage, but her sister did mention that at one point. That marriage might work 🤷‍♀️ 12mo

Pickpick

Instant classic. Loved the interfaith festivities, the PINNACLE of quirky small towns, and the budding romances and best friendships of Maryam and Anna. Nothing more appropriate for the time of year! #romcom #holidayromance
