The Watchmaker of Filigree Street
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street | Natasha Pulley
1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is a sweeping, atmospheric narrative that takes the reader on an unexpected journey through Victorian London, Japan as its civil war crumbles long-standing traditions, and beyond. Blending historical events with dazzling flights of fancy, it opens doors to a strange and magical past.

Thaniel receives an anonymous gift of a beautiful pocket watch, or maybe someone left it by mistake. The watch ends up saving his life, so he goes on a search to find out who left it for him. The answer changes everything for the better.

The story is unexpected, sweet, mysterious, scientific, and ultimately romantic. There were parts that were too technical for me, which led to my lower rating, but the ending saved the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I‘ve had a longing today to read. A true longing. I‘ve been thinking about books all day. Hoping that I can rip off this bandaid and get back to my old self. Yet, as I sit here with this book on my lap, my chest begins to ache. I just don‘t understand the block with reading, but at least today I can try. That‘s a step in the right direction.

Up next...This is a book club book & we meet on Friday. Wish me luck... ❤️📚

I honestly don't know how I feel. One part of me loved it. The world building, the London setting, Gilbert and Sullivan, Katsu, the science. One part of me found simplistic the choice of the villain, Grace reduced to a plot object and not a fully fledged character she started as, the ending is... well.. rosy and I don't know, I usually catch on, but the Mori/Thaniel, I missed. So 3.5 ⭐️ #booked2019 #summer #bookgiftedtoyou

Chancecall I‘ve just finished this book and was checking other people‘s reviews. I have clearly missed the point that Grace was supposed to be, or might have been the villain of the piece overall. I think maybe I got too tangled up with my own confusion as to what was going on with Mori and Thaniels relationship as the book reached the last third and Grace just vanished into the background. Interesting insight. 5mo

I loved this book. It had such a lovely charm and I loved the characters of Mori and Thaniel

Everything was described so perfectly without being too much and the story when along at a perfect pace, very exciting but still easy to follow

I found Grace's character to be selfish and horrid but the ending felt right

A quirky little genre-defying tale. Is it historical fiction? Mystery? Fantasy? A love story? Yes. A bit of all of those, but not entirely any one of them. The characters are well-developed and interesting, although I didn‘t find any of them particularly likable. The plot is as intricate as clockwork.

Steampunk, Victorian London, Japan, politics, class, love, friendship, clairvoyance, even kind of time travel of a sort, are all crammed into this story. I loved parts and was utterly confused by others. It is well written and I liked the friendship between main characters Thaniel and Mori. Other elements not so much. I didn‘t love this but suspect I will be thinking about it for a while. I also want a clockwork octopus now 🐙!

I enjoyed this story overall. It‘s a pick, with a few caveats: the ending doesn‘t quite deliver, swapping some of the carefully described pseudo-science for unnecessary & unexplained ‘magical‘ devices; and I‘m not sure about the handling of racism & racial stereotyping (sometimes felt like there was weird blurring between character inner monologues and the authorial voice). Curious to know what others think...

Another book that I absolutely loved! Set in Victorian England, the main character receives a pocket watch under mysterious circumstances and later has his life saved when the watch alarms just before an explosion. This leads him to search out the watchmaker, who's rather mysterious himself, and what follows is a fabulous story that I won't spoil at all. I can definitely see myself reading this book again, though & that's the mark of a good read.

It‘s like someone has looked into my soul 😄 “Grace rubbed her hair and felt like a Philistine for wanting rain. Throughout the winter she always believed that she was a summery sort of person. This was just the literary fix I needed. It scored 3s on GR but was a 4.5 for me. Put me in Victorian London with beautiful clockwork creations & an earnestly loveable protagonist, the plot can be as slow as thick custard but I‘m still delighted 🤗 This is a very wistful fantasy. A mystery slowly develops, the unravelling of it in the final chapters is a little Inception-ish. If you like Dickens plus Inception this could be for you.

Spent my Saturday morning finishing up this read for #LMPBC. I'm a little conflicted after finishing it despite it being a very well-crafted novel. Magical realism in Victorian England ✔️ Elegant, dark prose ✔️ Witty, well-constructed characters ✔️ Historial fiction ✔️ Plot...❌ It didn't flow for me and felt a bit forced, it lost me.. overall, 3/5 ⭐

Will be sending this out to you @Dulcinella so it gets to you for June! 🙏 Thanks @oOArankaOo 💕
