The Fifth Letter
The Fifth Letter | Nicola Moriarty
A fun vacation game turns destructive, exposing dark secrets, deeply buried grudges, and a shocking betrayal in Nicola Moriaritys intriguing debut. Four friends . . . Joni, Deb, Eden, and Trina have been best friends since high school, sharing a bond that has seen them through their teenage years and into adulthood. But now, time and circumstance is starting to pull them apart as careers, husbands, and babies get in the way. As their yearly vacation becomes less of a priorityat least for three of the womenhow can Joni find a way to draw the four of them back together? Four secrets . . . During a laughter and wine-filled night, the women dare one another to write anonymous letters, spilling their deepest, darkest secrets. But the fun game turns devastating, exposing cracks in their lives and the friendship they share. Each letter is a dark confession revealing shocking information. A troubled marriage? A substance abuse problem? A secret pregnancy? A heartbreaking diagnosis? Five letters . . . Late on one of their last nights together, after the other three have gone to bed, Joni notices something in the fireplacea burnt, crumpled, nearly destroyed, sheet of paper that holds the most shattering revelation of all. It is a fifth lettera hate-filled rant that exposes a vicious, deeply hidden grudge that has festered for decades. But who wrote it? Which one of them has seethed with resentment all these years? What should Joni do? Best friends are supposed to keep your darkest secrets. But the revelations Joni, Deb, Eden and Trina have shared will ripple through their lives with unforeseen consequences . . . and things will never be the same.

In keeping with wanting to read “ Aussie “ I picked this from the library. Famous sister too. I found it quite a tiresome read and almost bailed. Too much dialogue for me . Also a very weak plot. I finished it because it did get me in but was disappointing. @MrsMalaprop

MrsMalaprop I knew there were a number of Moriarty sister authors, but haven‘t been inspired to read any other than Liane. You‘ve not inspired me to try with this review 😅. 5y
Jeg @MrsMalaprop If the other sister pops up in the library I shall give it a go. I think there is one other sister who publishes. 5y

I found this one hard to rate. There were a lot of themes packed into it, and I'm ambivalent about the ending. Though I will try another of her books as I don't mind the chatty sprawling style.

I went down a rabbit hole on Amazon yesterday and found this book- on sale and everything. I have not been able to put it down. Its silly and over the top and juicy and exactly what Women‘s Fic should be! I‘m in love.

A quick, enjoyable read about four friends who are keeping secrets and telling lies.

I picked this up because I needed a simple and fun read (because my youngest doesn‘t sleep at night 😴) and it delivered. If you are a big fan of this author‘s older sister, Liane, you will probably like this but not love it. The sisters have a similar style, but Liane writes characters with such insight and complexity! Best not to compare. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

rather_be_reading i love liane moriarty, i have yet to read her sisters stuff 6y

Thousand-Lives @Samplergal Awesome, I love to meet fellow SLPs! What setting do you work in? I work in a hospital. PRN in attempt to balance kids and career. 😊 6y
Thousand-Lives @Night_Reader I like it so far -it has similarities to LM‘s style, but I don‘t think it‘s going to be quite as good. Anxiously waiting for LM to put out a new book!! 6y
Samplergal @Thousand-Lives I‘m newly retired from supervision and early intervention. Loved my hospital days, until kids. 6y

Ages 18-25 I thought good books had to be heavy, existential, classics 🙄 That attitude led me to read a lot of good books; but, damn, is that a pretentious & utterly incorrect way to view reading.

The Fifth Letter is no classic but it's good, fun & suspenseful. Moriarty mapped a web of friendships so complex but also so relatable. To imagine passing this up because it's too light is a tragedy. Im so happy to have broadened my horizons! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed the book before the letter was revealed, and then thereafter. Throughout the first part the anticipation of what the letter contained had me hooked, but then I felt a wave of disappointment as I discovered what the letter was about. However I continued, and eventually I couldn't put it down as the story continued, with the last revelation making me gasp.

3-1/2 ⭐️s..... Liane's sister Nicola, writes in a similar style to her- lots of secrets, lies and female friendships. This has an interesting concept. 4 old friends on a girls weekend, decide to each anonymously share a secret in a letter. But there is a fifth letter with a shocking revelation... so who wrote it? Page-turning, but the ending ties up a bit too neatly... Fun but a bit forgettable. But would make a good book club discussion I think.

Yournewfriendsams Whaaaat??!? I had no idea she had a sister! Buying them all! Thanks for sharing 😘 7y
KarenUK @Yournewfriendsams And there is a third sister called Jaclyn who is published too! 😊👍 7y

The format was interesting enough, but it wasn't the emotional payoff that her sister Liane's books provide. I honesty didn't understand the implications of the final scene. Good premise, but the execution wasn't what I thought it would be. It was cool that one of the main characters had my name: Eden!

I enjoyed this one. It's a fast read, made more so by the way we move back and forth between past and present, as well as getting small snatches of the ominous fifth letter.
The chilling nature of the letter and the rather rushed ending meant I didn't end up loving it, but I'll definitely read more by this author.

It's so weird for a main character in the book to have my name- Eden. And to hear it so many times in an Australian accent ☺️

I'm a little torn between thumbs up and so-so. I'd probably go with like 3.5/5 stars. It was good but not great. It was a quick read but there was so much going on and so many people it was a little hard to follow at times.

I had higher hopes for this book. I couldn't decide if it was a pick so I had to go with the so-so. Four old friends go on a mini vacation together and decide to anonymously write 4 letters with their biggest secrets for each other to read. Obviously things get uncovered, go awry, and some craziness ensues.

I'm a big fan of the "4 women are longtime friends & suddenly all of their secrets and resentments are about to come to light" formula. Moriarty drops enough clues and red herrings to keep you guessing. What's true? How well do we know our friends? A really fun read.
