Love Wins
Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality | Debbie Cenziper, Jim Obergefell
26 posts | 17 read | 40 to read
Love Wins is the love story behind the David and Goliath battle that won the most important American civil rights victory in decades - and inspired the rest of the world. More than twenty years ago, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur fell in love in Cincinnati, Ohio, a place where gays were routinely picked up by police and fired from their jobs. In 2013 Jim and John - who was dying of the crippling neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - flew to Maryland, where same-sex marriage was legal, and exchanged vows on the tarmac. But back home, Ohio refused to recognise their union. John's death certificate would describe him as single and Jim would not only have to mourn his partner but also be denied acknowledgment of the life they had shared. Then they met lawyer Al Gerhardstein, who had spent nearly three decades advocating for civil rights, and who now saw an opening that had never been explored in the courtroom. Together Al and Jim began a long and gruelling battle against overwhelming odds, partnering with more than fifty lawyers and plaintiffs to make their case. In 2015 the Supreme Court ruled in their favour, making same-sex marriage the law of the land in a decision as groundbreaking as Roe v Wade. At its heart, Love Wins is the ultimate love story - about a man who goes to such lengths to fulfil a promise to the love of his life that he ends up changing the world. Part Erin Brockovich, part Philadelphia, this story will inspire readers for generations to come.

Wow! This is one of the most profound and impactful books and I read much of it through tears. Filled with remarkable people and reads like a legal thriller, this book is about the application of the law to suit the tides of time so as not to trample the fundamental rights of every person enshrined under the Constitution - the right to marry, that right whom to marry, that right to choose whom to love and have a committed relationship with. 🙏😊

I visited the lovely #littlefreelibrary (at the right of the photo) at #equalityhouse in Kansas today and added two big stacks of books. This is right across the street from those nasty Topeka-based freaks whose name I won't speak. There are actually three painted houses now, and a community garden. #LoveWins

GingerAntics I‘ve never heard of these “Topeka freaks.” I‘ll have to google them. I‘m going to guess their a crazy hate group, though. Love they have to see this everyday, though. 6y
Bklover Love this!! 6y
goodbyefrancie @GingerAntics The call themselves a "church", but they are horrible people. I try to never use their name because I don't want them to get any more press. They are the group that protests at funerals of soldiers, or people of the LGBTQ community, or anyone who supports them. Just horrid and nasty people. I've seen them in action three times, and they have kids as young as 5 or 6 carrying signs with that verbal vomit. Should be child abuse. 6y
GingerAntics Oh I know who you‘re talking about. I didn‘t know they were from Topica. I actually watched a documentary about them after another of the daughters defected and did a TEDtalk about ending hatred. I‘d never heard for them before that. 6y

We are back with our staff pick Sunday! Today we have Marketing Assoc., Julianna, sharing her current favorite read, LOVE WINS! "This book opened my eyes to the incredible movers and shakers behind the case that shaped history. What the world needs to remember as we navigate uncertain times is the title itself…LOVE WINS."

BraveNewBooks What a hopeful post. Thank you. 8y

An inspiring read...but in light of the recent election results, I'm terrified that the justice these men fought for will be erased.

Even though I went in knowing what the SCOTUS ruling was, I still cried when it came down.

"We shouldn't have the tyranny of the majority..."

This is so relevant to the current argument in Australia about taking the equal marriage issue to a plebiscite.

Will I read them all? Probably not, but it is nice to dream. 🙃

Love Wins is about the people behind the lawsuits that eventually lead to the SCOTUS ruling that legalized gay marriage. The discrimination and the joy in their stories made me tear up a few times (sometimes on the subway). TBH, I probably wouldn't have read this if it wasn't for my book club, but I'm glad we picked this because it is eye-opening and beautifully written, too. If you're looking for a non-fiction read I highly recommend Love Wins.

#BookMail is the best mail! 📬 Thank you @WilliamMorrow! Last year I had the opportunity to be at the Supreme Court during the announcement of Obergefell v. Hodges & was lucky to meet Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff & co-writer of this book. He is incredibly nice & I am really looking forward to reading about his heartbreaking but inspirational story that made US history and led to marriage equality. ❤️💛💚💙💜 #QueerBooks #WNDB #LGBTBooks

brendanmleonard What an amazing story - the book sounds lovely! 😃❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard It was so much fun! I'm sure the book will be a fantastic read. His coauthor Debbie Cenziper is a great journalist in this area. 😊 8y

BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks That's awesome! So much respect for them. Litigation is so tough to deal with, so I have a lot of respect for the people with the determination to see it through. What amazing people. 8y
Megabooks I know @BookishFeminist ! I had the opportunity to separately sue a major auto company that caused all these problems I have, but ultimately decided not to. I also had a decent medical malpractice case once, too. I chickened out both times. I hate litigation. ☹️ 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Reason number 174927272 I don't practice law. I hate what litigation does to people. It's totally not chickening out if you choose not to pursue litigation—it's very legit because it's very stressful. Cost/benefit analysis is everything & that includes emotional health. I'm so sorry you had an accident that still causes you so much pain! I have a friend who had that happen & she did litigate & it's still going on years later. 8y
Megabooks Yes, I think it was definitely an emotional health thing, an age thing (I was 20 at the time), and an I'm-just-trying-to-get-by-with-my-shitty-body thing. I'm glad I go years rather than months between episodes now, but my body finds new and exciting ways to interfere with my life 19 years after the accident. 😕 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks ☹️ that's exciting all right. I definitely don't envy you & hope you can get through your latest bought as smoothly & quickly as possible! 8y

Today's the anniversary of the 14th Amend to the US Constitution! First passed to overturn the 3/5 compromise & grant full rights to Black citizens, it includes due process & equal protection clauses & has been used to support desegregation of schools, interracial marriage, affirmative action, the right to privacy, abortion rights, decriminalization of sodomy & most recently, marriage equality. Here's some books on its history. 📜⚖🇺🇸 #OTD #WNDB

TheNextBook I need to put all of these on my list! 8y

Megabooks Awesome!!! 8y
BekahB Fantastic books! I really want to read Something Must Be Done About Prince Edward County and Love Wins. I listened to an interview with Jim Obergefell on the Decode DC podcast (episode 144) and immediately added Love Wins to my TBR. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook Yes! I hope you enjoy & let me know what you think of them! 8y
BookishFeminist @rebuketodali @BookishMarginalia @Eyelit @Ebooksandcooks Thanks guys!! 😊 I'm a nerd and wish there were more accessible books written about the 14th amendment bc it was surprisingly hard to find non-academic ones. 🤓 8y
BookishFeminist @BekahB Something Must Be Done is great & super informative, I found it especially so since I live in Virginia. The caveat though is it's written by a white journalist so it can be a bit elitist in places. Also JIM OBERGEFELL ROCKS. I was at the Supreme Court last year on decision day & am super lucky to have met him. He's so nice!! I need to read his book already. 8y
BookishFeminist @BekahB Also, Decode DC podcast? What is this of which you speak? Tell me more. 🤔 8y
Floresj GREAT list of books!!!! Thanks for the recommendations! 8y
BekahB @BookishFeminist DecodeDC is a weekly podcast that focuses each episode on a political topic/people/cultural event in D.C. Even though you can determine the journalists'/podcast's underlying opinion based on what they're reporting and how, it's more informative than opinion based. The current host is Jimmy Williams. Their interviews are fantastic! They have a combo of serious and lighter episodes. It's my favorite politics-based podcast (so far). 8y
BekahB @BookishFeminist I've also started listening to the FiveThirtyEight Elections podcast. They've provided a great breakdown of the elections. 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @BekahB 👀 *subscribes and downloads all the episodes for my upcoming road trip* It sounds great! Thanks for the awesome podcast rec. You just made this DC native & political wonk very happy. 👍🏼 I also enjoy FiveThirtyEight. Nate Silver's predictive models never cease to fascinate me. 8y
BookishFeminist @Floresj You're welcome! I hope you enjoy some of them. 😊👍🏼 8y
