Marie Antoinette (Movie Tie-In Edition): The Journey
Marie Antoinette (Movie Tie-In Edition): The Journey | Antonia Fraser
France s iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake," was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Antonia Fraser s lavish and engaging portrait excites compassion and regard for the queen, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but in the culture of an unparalleled time and place."

This one won't be a winner for everyone. It's very dense with the political aspect as well as the dynastic elements at play. Since I LOVE history I found this to a very interesting read...however it does not read as a “page-turner“ and many may be put off by that. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 I‘ve had this book for years and finally read it. I did a mix of reading via paperback and audio. I feel a lot of the politics went over my head, but that‘s probably my fault as that‘s the least interesting to me! She was a fascinating woman. I‘ve also always loved the movie by Sophia Coppola. ❤️

rwmg I do find Antonia Fraser's books a bit overwhelming at times 3y
Lauraandherbooks @rwmg yes this is the second book I have by her and same results.. I love real history but I have read textbooks more interesting than this one .. and I‘m really interested in the life of Marie Antoinette 3y

My first podcast for #nfn2020. The tagged book is referenced in the podcast, and I have it sitting on my shelf with plans to read this month.Knowing little about her, I could pick anything for #TIL but I found her name interesting. So she and all her sisters were named Maria and therefore known by their second names, in her case Antonia, then later used the French diminuative, which was Antoine. Continued in comments

tdrosebud When she married Louis XVI, her name was adapted to the French of the ruling family, thus Maria Antoine became Marie Antoniette. This was likened to today when Kate Middleton became Duchess Catherine.

I tried getting into Hunger's Brides, but I'm hitting a fiction slump. Decided to add another biography instead. I've always been intrigued by Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and the Reign of Terror, so I'm excited about this biography!

It‘s the little things - when your sheets match your book 💙Glad to finally get back to this one! Read it and Weep was a library book that I had been stuck on for over a month and was determined to finish. Still loving this book, even if I am only able to read in small bits

A decadent woman who has long interested me. I end up torn in my feelings about her- libertine, product of her time, misrepresented, alienated woman... Marie was a complex woman who knew how to dress for a party.

Bookwitchery What tends to be forgotten so often is that she was a teenager in an arranged marriage. I need to read this bio. She was a fascinating woman who seemed to keep her dignity to the end. 7y

Jess_Read_This @Bookwitchery Exactly. If I recall correctly, her sister was originally supposed to go. When she got there she wasn't completely welcomed, her accent was mocked, and she didn't have anyone she was close with there. I can't imagine being in that situation as an adult much less a teenager. 7y
Cinfhen My daughter did her HS senior thesis paper using Marie Antoinette, Coco Chanel & Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy as fashion icons💕💕💕 so I chuckled when you mentioned MA was a fabulous dresser 😍 (edited) 7y

Cinfhen Haha, how she got away with that topic for AP World History still boggles the mind @Jess_Read_This But my daughter is pretty convincing when she wants to be! And yes....it was a fun paper 👑💃🏼👠 7y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen Lol! The history of women's fashion icons definitely had an effect on global policy, I am sure! 7y

kricheal @ValerieAndBooks I really love nonfiction reads however I do have to admit that sometimes while reading biographies/autobiographies I tend to get bored. Generally their younger years tend to be the part for me that's tough to get through. I was never bored once through this book. 7y

All those French names gave my 4 semesters of college French a run for its money. Still, it was fascinating to better understand how the most infamous queen finally lost her head.

The Queen is now en-route to Paris... She is lost from Versailles.

The bookmark is my GO-TO. It is my favorite. I use it when I'm serious.

And reading of a revolution is serious business.

Too bad this line doesn't apply to our lost monarch.
