Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette: The Journey | Antonia Fraser
France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake," was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history. Antonia Fraser's lavish and engaging portrait excites compassion and regard for all aspects of the queen, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but in the culture of an unparalleled time and place. From the Trade Paperback edition.

It‘s the little things - when your sheets match your book 💙Glad to finally get back to this one! Read it and Weep was a library book that I had been stuck on for over a month and was determined to finish. Still loving this book, even if I am only able to read in small bits

I enjoy Antonia Fraser's books and this was no exception. Interesting to learn the little parts of her life away from all the royal drama

This took me forever to finally finish, but it‘s a good sympathetic portrait of the tragic queen.

Versailles. Not literary exactly other than being a setting for a lot of historical fiction. 💖🇫🇷

A decadent woman who has long interested me. I end up torn in my feelings about her- libertine, product of her time, misrepresented, alienated woman... Marie was a complex woman who knew how to dress for a party.

Bookwitchery What tends to be forgotten so often is that she was a teenager in an arranged marriage. I need to read this bio. She was a fascinating woman who seemed to keep her dignity to the end. 3y
Jess_Read_This @TrishB It is high on my TBR list now! 3y

Jess_Read_This @Bookwitchery Exactly. If I recall correctly, her sister was originally supposed to go. When she got there she wasn't completely welcomed, her accent was mocked, and she didn't have anyone she was close with there. I can't imagine being in that situation as an adult much less a teenager. 3y
Cinfhen My daughter did her HS senior thesis paper using Marie Antoinette, Coco Chanel & Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy as fashion icons💕💕💕 so I chuckled when you mentioned MA was a fabulous dresser 😍 (edited) 3y
TrishB She's fascinating! 3y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen I bet that was a fascinating thesis to write!!! 3y
Cinfhen Haha, how she got away with that topic for AP World History still boggles the mind @Jess_Read_This But my daughter is pretty convincing when she wants to be! And yes....it was a fun paper 👑💃🏼👠 3y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen Lol! The history of women's fashion icons definitely had an effect on global policy, I am sure! 3y

😍😍😍 I am so fascinated with European Royals of the past. #letthemeatcake #sheneveractuallysaidthat

ValerieAndBooks I have this one but need to read it! I'm also fascinated by European royalty. 3y
kricheal @ValerieAndBooks I really love nonfiction reads however I do have to admit that sometimes while reading biographies/autobiographies I tend to get bored. Generally their younger years tend to be the part for me that's tough to get through. I was never bored once through this book. 3y
ValerieAndBooks Antonia and her daughter Flora are really good biographers. For others, I sometimes skim through boring parts too 😊 3y

All those French names gave my 4 semesters of college French a run for its money. Still, it was fascinating to better understand how the most infamous queen finally lost her head.

The Queen is now en-route to Paris... She is lost from Versailles.

The bookmark is my GO-TO. It is my favorite. I use it when I'm serious.

And reading of a revolution is serious business.

Too bad this line doesn't apply to our lost monarch.

"The destiny of Marie Antoinette contains everything that might touch your heart: if you are happy, she had happiness; if you suffer, for one year or longer, all the pains of her life tore her apart."
