The Futures
The Futures | Anna Pitoniak
A heart-wrenching debut novel about a young couple trying to find out what they really want in life--and whether or not that includes each other. Julia and Evan fall in love as undergraduates at Yale. For Evan, who grew up in a small town in Canada, Yale is a whole new world, and Julia--blond, beautiful and rich--is part of his vision for a successful future. After they graduate in 2008, they move together to New York city, where Evan takes a job at a hedge fund--another step forward in the life he imagines for himself. Julia, who has only known a life of privilege, graduates with an art history degree and no plan for her own future. She lands a low paying assistant job at a nonprofit, unsure about what she really wants, and wondering when everyone else figured that out for themselves. With the market crashing and banks failing around him, Evan becomes involved in an increasingly high-stakes deal at work, and begins to realize that the price of privilege may come with dangerous strings attached. Meanwhile, Julia reconnects with someone from her past--someone who offers her a vision of a different kind of life. Told in alternating perspectives, The Futures is a vivid story about love--falling in and out of it--betrayal, and the burning desire to be valued.

There are some mixed reviews on this one but overall I enjoyed it. I can totally relate to that weird transition period between college and the real world, when you‘re constantly struggling to figure out what the hell you‘re supposed to do next. We all just hope we‘re doing the right thing and wing it.

Good. Enjoyed how it showed the how many people negotiate their way through the transition period from University to work whilst trying to keep true to theirselves through the relationship of Julia and Evan.

Thank you #netgalley for the proof copy

I've read lots of mixed reviews about this one. I'm glad I decided to pick it up. I'm only about 100 pages in and love it. I'm always enthralled with reading stories involving work places, characters interviewing for job and/or assistant positions. Don't know why....anyway I hope it maintains it appeal for me. Also love that the main characters meet day one of college just like I did with my husband. 😉

I won this from a Goodreads giveaway. Julia and Evan move to Manhattan together after graduation. It only takes a #newyorkminute for everything to start to crumble. Evan works in finance during the 2008 meltdown and Julia feels adrift in a job she dislikes while he works all hours. Sadly there is nothing new or interesting here. The chapters alternate between perspectives but both of their voices sound exactly the same. #litsyatoz #rockinmay

Cinfhen Such a great review....I've been wanting to read this book for awhile...thanks to your review it doesn't need to be bumped up anytime soon! 7y

The memory persists like a hot cavity. I shut my eyes, and I see Evan. I try to fall asleep, and I see Evan. And I see him as he was at the very end, his face written with disappointment. It was like he'd always known that it would come to this. Four years of my life disappeared into that expression 💔🌃

Bailedbailed

I just don't care, is the thought that kept running through my head. Chapters alternate POV, but it's soooo slow and boring. Going to bring this one back to the library tomorrow so someone else can try it.

L_auren It was so-so for me but I definitely considered bailing due to indifference!! 7y

The audiobook was nicely done, but the book itself was a little boring, didn't really offer anything new, and was fairly predictable. As I said, however, narrators Sarah Mollo-Christensen and Michael Crouch were believable as the protagonists. Another plus? I did a bunch of book organizing while listening.

Just started this novel of a couple trying to thrive in New York after college. It takes place on the brink of the economic collapse. So far I'm curious, though the main characters seem a little bit stereotypical. I'm listening to the audiobook -- two narrators for the two points of view.

Zelma I read the synopsis and thought that sounded right up my alley. Then realized it was already on my TBR! 😆 7y

This book about (privileged) recent grads floundering in the midst of the '08 financial crisis is a thinly developed, bland, and forgettable rehashing of a story I've heard too many times before.

shawnmooney Loved your review! Made me chortle, and confirmed my initial sense that this book wasn't going to be all that great. 7y
shelf-improvement @shawnmooney I don't remember why it ended up on my TBR list, but it feels a little like the author couldn't stray very far from her own experiences and flesh it out into something broader. I suspect that it got published mainly because she works at Random House. 7y
Reviewsbylola I think I have this on Netgalley. Now I'm scared. 7y
shelf-improvement @Reviewsbylola FWIW, it's not a bad book, just uninspired. 7y

The book was meh. I would compare this to The Hopefuls but much more simplistic. It was fast paced, probably why I did not bail. I think I might be a little old to understand these characters, but I think somebody just starting out in post school like, might really like this.

Laura317 I like your screen shot! Is that something you made or is it an app? 7y

Bailedbailed

I found the alternating chapters from different points of view but of the same situation, tedious. It took twice as long for the plot to move. I sent it back to the library early so someone else can enjoy.

I liked this book about a millennial couple taking on NYC just as the economy is collapsing in 2008. Fates, jobs, and misperceptions cause major problems between Julia and Evan. The writing was good, the story compelling and quick, but not surprising. Full review on Novel Visits on 1/19.

I loved this book! Told from alternating viewpoints, the novel revolves around Julia and Evan who meet in college and eventually move in together. We witness their relationship obstacles and the paths they take to assuage the guilt that assaults them. It's a lovely look at young love, secrets we keep, and the lengths we go to to ensure our happiness. A must read! @annapitoniak Thanks to #NetGalley
