Johnny and the Bomb
Johnny and the Bomb | Terry Pratchett
11 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Twelve-year-old Johnny Maxwell has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This has never been more true than when he finds himself in his hometown on May 21, 1941, over forty years before his birth! An accidental time traveler, Johnny knows his history. He knows England is at war, and he knows that on this day German bombs will fall on the town. It happened. It's history. And as Johnny and his friends quickly discover, tampering with history can have unpredictableand drasticeffects on the future. But letting history take its course means letting people die. What if Johnny warns someone and changes history? What will happen to the future? If Johnny uses his knowledge to save innocent lives by being in the right place at the right time, is he doing the right thing? Mixing nail-biting suspense with outrageous humor, Terry Pratchett explores a classic time-travel paradox in Johnny Maxwell's third adventure.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one. I can‘t say it would have been a YA trilogy I would have ever picked up on my own, but I found it enjoyable, a light fun silly read, but with some great science time travel content, and still showed some sexism and racism in a way that was surprisingly topical at the moment. 4y

julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's fascinating how some of Pratchett's books age well. Not so nice that some topics still ring true 20+ years later though. Humankind as a whole is a very slow learner. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG God yes! 🙄 And there was a great line in this one that struck me, as one character excused bad behavior (they were in the past) and said, they didn‘t mean it, it was the way they were raised, etc... but it gets turned back on her about sexism later. The point was, they might not know better, or mean it as hateful, but that doesn‘t mean it doesn‘t hurt just the same. 4y
Gezemice I just acquired it from the library and have not yet had time to read. Glad you liked it! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG 4y

Pickpick

I can‘t say I would have stuck with this YA trilogy on my own, but I‘m glad I read them with this group. Johnny always has the craziest adventures, this time with time travel & the repercussion that can occur when you mess with time.... plus surprisingly I found parts still very topical considering Yo-less experiences racism, it being written off and then used to inform Kirsty when she experiences sexism. Still clever & timely!

It is 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but I‘ve got shade, diet, coke, and a Terry Pratchett I‘ve never read before. 💛😁💛

ElizaMarie I love In-and-Out. I need to find one soon!

BookmarkTavern @ElizaMarie I was so happy when one opened up in Utah! 4y
ElizaMarie @ozma.of.oz so there isn't one in my hometown. But as a travel nurse... I run into them from time to time. Usually when I drive up through Texas because there is one on the way to Austin.. But yeah I fell in love! 4y
BookmarkTavern @ElizaMarie I first tried it on a choir tour trip to California! I was instantly hooked! 😁 4y
