43 posts | 50 read | 29 to read
Every nation that invades the City gives it a new name. But before long, new invaders arrive and the City changes hands once again. The natives don't let themselves get caught up in the unending wars. To them, their home is the Nameless City, and those who try to name it are forever outsiders. Kaidu is one such outsider. He's a Dao born and bred--a member of the latest occupying nation. Rat is a native of the Nameless City. At first, she hates Kai for everything he stands for, but his love of his new home may be the one thing that can bring these two unlikely friends together. Let's hope so, because the fate of the Nameless City rests in their hands.

This is a amazing book about a lost city in a mountain that no one could name. A boy is training to become a warrior and meets a girl that teaches him ways to run jump and survive. This is a amazing book that I would hope you read to

REREAD 7/25/2021: This was just as much fun the second time around. Kai and Rat‘s friendship is the absolute best!

I‘m not sure why I waited so long to read this one, but I‘m glad I finally did! I love the vaguely historical setting and the complexities of friendships across nations.

Top 10 of 2019 - Runners Up

The Nameless City (trilogy) by Faith Erin Hicks - gorgeous art and a fantastic story make this YA graphic novel trilogy a standout. Give it to every tween you know.

Queer Eye: Love Yourself, Love Your Life by The Fab Five - if you love the Netflix series, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this book. It's like the best kind of therapy.

(Continued in comments)

EliNeedsMoreShelves Fables, Vol. 15: Rose Red by Willingham, et al - 2019 is the year I finally read the entire Fables series. Not every volume is stellar, but as a whole it's a fabulous series, and this volume was my favorite. 4y
ChasingOm I still have the final trade of Fables left unread because I don‘t want it to be over!! 😭 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @ChasingOm I completely understand! I think I went into mourning a little bit when I finished the last one. 4y

I've been reading a lot of middle grade graphic novels lately as they have felt good for my burdened soul, but this one was a real standout. I like the art style, the story was engaging, and the characters were easy to connect with. Recommended, and looking forward to the next book!

High in the mountains, the Nameless City is fought over & occupied & fought over & occupied and... Conquerer & conquered seldom mix until one day Kai ventures outside the fortified palace. There he meets Rat, one of the Named (people from the city) who hates him on sight. But, neither is quite what they seem. They become friends & that‘s good because only together can Kai & Rat save The Nameless City from a growing threat. Fun story, great art.

THE NAMELESS CITY and its sequel are among the most exciting comics I've read in the last few years. They're about power and colonialism, with an emphasis on the ways people's biases can make it tough for them to decolonize their behaviours.

And they're all-ages.

All-ages comics that give kids credit make me SO HAPPY. Yes, this one deals with potentially upsetting subject matter, but any kid who can handle ATLA can handle THE NAMELESS CITY.

RachLovesTV I love this series! And all of Faith Erin Hicks' work, really. She's super nice, too! 6y

So, this past holiday weekend, I played a video game for the first time in MONTHS! Uncharted 4. Roughly 15 hours. And this juvenile graphic novel was mentioned in the epilogue. Very enjoyable. Quick read, finished it in about 40 minutes at lunch. Fun characters, great intro to the world. Got book 2 after work :)

Too many mouths to feed today, Rat. It's all gone.

I'm in the kids section of the library, so a graphic novel was the closest book to me that had at least 117 pages. This doesn't bode well for my 2017. Gulp!

Wow, y'all. Faith Erin Hicks delivers a stellar all-ages comic about colonialism, set in an oft-conquered city that's been under one empire's control for thirty years and is now poised for change. I love the characters, I love the art, and I love how Hicks doesn't shy away from the complexity of it all. Highly recommended to fans of ATLA in particular. #boutofbooks

A great start to a series! It definitely felt a lot like Avatar the Last Airbender- but with out the bending. I loved how distinctive all the characters are, especially the General of All Blades who was world weary but kind (and not unlike the emperor from Mulan tbh).

I book-talked this giant stack of graphic novels to 100 third and fourth graders today and they were SO EXCITED about all of them. Talking to kids about books they are actually excited about is my favorite thing. Made my day.

LectricSheep Oh man. "Cat Dad, King of the Goblins" is the best book title I've heard all week. 7y
Keyoung @LectricSheep This is my (kid-oriented) pitch for Cat Dad: "Finally! Here's a book about normal kids doing normal stuff. Miri and Luey are totally normal sisters: their best friend is a giant frog, their closet is full of goblins and their dad just got turned into a cat. Totally normal, right?" 7y
LectricSheep I need to find a kid and give this to them immediately. 😀 7y
violentecstasy Is that a new(ish) Ben Hatke there on top? Eep. 7y
Keyoung @violentecstasy Yes! It's a Jack and the Beanstalk retelling. 7y

I bought this on the enthusiastic recommendation of my comic shop clerk. It was a fast read and it was decent--I could see the series picking up in the future because the characters were cool. Definitely shades of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but not quite there.
