Star Wars: Catalyst
Star Wars: Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel | James Luceno
Lauded Star Wars author James Luceno returns to pen an intense tale of ambition and betrayal that sets the stage for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatines top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before their enemies can. And an old friend of Krennics, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key. Galens energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennics debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactors tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennics web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

This was the prequel to Rogue One. It was good. I especially liked the friction between Krennic and Tarkin 😸

I enjoyed all the background information about Jyns family in this one. Especially her mother has a big part, one gets to know her a lot better than in the movie. There are also parts about the mysterious chrystals used by the Jedi. When it comes to learning more about the Star Wars universe this book is a great read.

Sadly, the story could have used a little more speed. Everything just happens and happens and then the book is over...

Finally sitting down with my Star Wars books this week 😅 I really liked this one, it added some much needed backstory on the Erso family and Krennic. I know Luceno has a somewhat dry style but I love how utterly Imperial it feels. It just matches up so well for stories that are heavy on people like Tarkin.

On to the next book for #starwarsbuddyread

Riveted_Reader_Melissa So good! I hope you enjoy Rebel Rising, I felt the same way with the backstory fleshed out in that one! 6y

This great little short story was included at the end of the kindle version of Catalyst.

About the Empire‘s takeover of the media, and sending top reporters to cover vapid Imperial Balls for the populace including what everyone is wearing and who their designers are...and one reporter‘s decision to try to include a bit more in the stories she‘s assigned. It‘s also a great story about how important quiet resistance can be.

I really appreciated this one more on a my second reading. Seeing how good people can be trapped by very bad circumstances, and how government overreach and outright despicable behavior can start hidden in plan sight until it‘s too overwhelming to imagine how you missed it.

It so nice to get little glimpses of Galen and Lyra when, even when things were bad, before they were terrible, and I love how this book shows how good people can be trapped by very bad circumstances.

Getting ready to start Catalyst for this month‘s #StarWarsBuddyRead

How‘s everyone else doing? Have your Library holds come in? Have you read this one already? It‘s a re-read for me, but one I‘m looking forward to now that I know more of the story.

InLibrisVeritas I haven't started! I was trying to wait to see if scribd would have the audio before the end of Sept. But no such luck. So I'll probably dig into my paper copy soo ! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas Hey, if you want to wait until Oct when it changes over on Scribd and listen to it then instead, go ahead and do that. We‘re a pretty laid back reading group. I really just wanted to post it again in case anyone else wanted to join in. 6y

Alicia I just finished on audio and will post my thoughts soon! ☺️☺️ I added it to the end of my latest Star Wars audio binge. 6y
NovelGirl82 I did the audio of this one not too long ago, as well. 6y
InLibrisVeritas I'll probably end up playing catch up in October even with me picking up the hardcover 😅 I have been super flighty with my reading lately. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas I completely understand. Not only too much to read, not enough time, but a million other little things that want to interfere. I just started Mort last night which was the Discworld book for back in June, 🤷‍♀️And sadly I even bought them, but with no Library loan pressure those are the ones that kept getting bumped. 🙄😂 6y

The #starwarsbuddyread group's new read for the month is Catalyst! It's the start of our Rogue One mini-trilogy set for the next three months.

I hope everyone enjoyed Ahsoka last month! Will any of you new to her character try out the Clone Wars cartoon to see more of her?

TheNeverendingTBR I want to read ALL of these Star Wars books!!! 😍 6y
InLibrisVeritas @trioxin_sematary You are very welcome to join us for our current and/or future reads if you want to! They have all been really good reads so far! 6y
DivaDiane Oh boy. I would love to read these, but I have so many other plans!! I think I forgot to post about Lost Stars, which I finished while on vacation in August. Will find the thread post! Also for Ahsoka. I read it last winter. I loved Ahsoka‘s character in Clone Wars. I would highly recommend watching it. It‘s not just for kids! 6y

Not my favorite of the new Star Wars books (that still goes to Bloodline), but still a good story if you are interested in the backstory before Rogue One. How did Galen ever become involved with Orson Krennic and the Empire to begin with, what was their relationship with him before we saw them at the beginning of Rogue One. A very interesting backstory that takes place right as the Empire emerges from the disillusion of the Republic.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa What can I say, I'm still partial to the original cast 😉 (edited) 8y

My catch-up series and other books on my TBR list for this month.... so far 2 down (+2 comics that weren't even on my list...yes, I get distracted by comics occasionally), and 4 in progress. Catalyst will probably be finished by tomorrow (the library would like it back soon).😉 #BookishProblems #TBRTuesday!

NovelGirl82 Oh! Catalyst audio is up soon for me, as well!! Hubby is going with me on a road trip at the end of the month, so I think we'll listen to Rogue One on the trip. 😊😊 (edited) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @NovelGirl82 I have Rogue One on hold at the library too.... so I'll probably see it in a few months, LOL 8y
NovelGirl82 Haha! I went ahead and went the audible route with them, since hubby and I are both Star Wars fans. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @NovelGirl82 Hahaha... I ordered them both in Hard Cover, because I'm a fan too...but then I'll check out the audiobook from the library anyway and listen to the great production values (sound effects, score, etc) 8y
NovelGirl82 We have them both in hardback, as well. The hubby has already read them both. I prefer the audio route with them for the same reason. I love that they have all of the sound effects & everything. 8y

Finally finished this. The last third of the book is super fast-paced and exciting, and I couldn't really predict how it was going to end. Great storytelling - simple tells for who was a "good guy" vs "bad guy" (people who showed basic respect for the baby in the story vs people who regarded her with total distaste, refusing to even use her name). Now I need to see the movie.

I have a confession to make. I squeezed one last book into January. The book is Catalyst by James Luceno, which I listened to on audio. I really enjoy Star Wars audiobooks because the high production values make them a pleasure to listen to. That said, the stories are always so-so and I rarely finish them. I'd say I really enjoyed the first 75% of Catalyst before the story tapered off, but those production values! That's how audiobooks should be!

CrowCAH I've been wanting to read a Star Wars book; which do you recommend me to start with? 8y
Pruzy I would start with a stand-alone novel to see if you like Star Wars books. I'd recommend Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn if you like Han Solo and heists or Choices of One (also by Timothy Zahn) about a woman with a lightsaber who is Hand to the Emperor. If you do want to try a series, I'd go with Jedi Search (part of the Jedi Academy trilogy) by Kevin J Anderson and features Luke Skywalker starting his new academy. 8y

Prepare for a book purge from me: it has been too long and I have been reading! Up first: Catalyst. If you have seen Rogue One or plan to ever see it, read this right now. Great backstory on Jyn's parents and their connection to Krennic. My husband and I caught so much in the movie that we only understood because of this book.
