The Antiques
The Antiques: A Novel | Kris D'Agostino
An irresistible, incisive, fast-paced comedic drama about a family who reunites after the death of its patriarch, just as a hurricane tears through town. For fans of Jonathan Tropper, Emma Straub, and Karen Joy Fowler. On the night of a massive hurricane, three estranged siblings learn that their father is dying. For the first time in years, they convene at their childhood home in Upstate New York, where the storm has downed power lines, flooded houses, and destroyed the familys antique store. The Westfalls are no strangers to dysfunction. But never have their lives felt so out of control. Armie is living in their parents basement. In Manhattan, Josef, a sex-addicted techie, is struggling to repair his broken relationship with his daughters. Their sister, Charlie, who works in Hollywood as a publicist for a wayward young actress, just learned that her son has been expelled from preschool. Amid the storm, they come together to plan their fathers memorial service, only to learn his dying wishthey must sell his priceless Magritte painting. As their failures are laid bare, they discover that hope often lurks in the darkest of places. And so, too, can hilarity. Complete with an irresistible plot and deeply flawed, affectionately rendered characters, Kris DAgostinos breakout novel charts the unexpected epiphanies that emerge in chaos. A rollicking tableau of life in all its messy complexity, The Antiques is a heartbreaking, nimble, laugh-out-loud funny send-up of modern family life.

This library sale find had some amusing moments, but the plot is already fading from memory. 💯 #MoreMehThanYeah

Hurricane Sandy hits the NYC area, and in the Hudson Valley, a family patriarch dies. His oldest is a sex addict trying to juggle two girlfriends while pining for his ex-wife. Middle sis lives in LA, has a wild 5 year old, and works for a whiny celebrity. The youngest can‘t seem to fly the nest. Chaos erupts when they all meet.

Cinfhen It sounds like a book I would love!!! Messy families are my jam. I might need to re- stack and look to #BorrowNotBuy 🤪 1y

This book has a lot of odd light fictionalization, including this

Glaxo + Wellcome + SmithKline Beecham = GSK or GlaxoSmithKline, which is the maker of a number of anti-depressants 🤣🤣

Cinfhen I‘ve been curious about this book - I stacked it ages ago!! 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Eh. #moremehthanyeah I‘m glad it cost a dollar! 1y

Finished The Antiques today. I'm usually 100% here for dysfunctional family drama, but this one was just so-so. I found the characters a little flat and generic. The asshole brother was there just to be the asshole brother, the caring sister was there to do the emotional labor for everyone else... it was basically family drama bingo.

Almost done with this one. It won't prove to be memorable. Still, I'm finishing it.

It's hard to have a #LitsyPartyOfOne when the house is full.

(Parenthetical writing isn't so annoying on audio.) I didn't find the characters likable and their arcs are slight, BUT I did have a journey so that by the end I accepted them. That's pretty much how some family relationships go, right?

I love a tale of a dysfunctional family, dark yet still funny. This book is that, but it didn't really work for me. Two and a half stars.

Deconstructed fish tacos and my two current reads. It's unfortunate for The Antiques that I'm reading it alongside Sweet Lamb. Millet's writing is just so beautiful. And not a single parenthetical (yet 😛) #bookanddinner

8little_paws Oh, SLOH is BONKERS. But I really really enjoyed the experience. 7y
Lola @8little_paws I loved it! Bonkers is right! And I totally agree with your Satan thoughts. Satan and Trump. 7y

Not surprisingly, it's very Nest-y (and kinda funny that the authors of both have *D'* in their names) but I'm trying not to let that influence my opinion. I will say that the author's liberal use of parentheticals is driving me a bit crazy-a little ironic because I am a liberal user (abuser?) of the parenthetical myself 😳😂

#TBRtemptation post! For fans of Emma Straub & Karen Jay Fowler, a fast-paced comedic drama! A dysfunctional family's patriarch is on his death bed, and his estranged grown kids gather at his upstate NY home from Hollywood, Manhattan, & the basement...during a powerful hurricane that damages his antique shop. He insists they must sell a priceless painting. Go figure. Let the dysfunctional hilarity ensue! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
