Round Ireland With A Fridge
Round Ireland With A Fridge | Tony Hawks
35 posts | 28 read | 32 to read
'I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of One Hundred Pounds that he cannot hitchhike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month' A foolhardy attempt to win a drunken bet led to Tony Hawks having one of the most unforgettable experiences of his life. Joined by his trusty travelling-companion-cum-domestic-appliance, he found himself in the midst of a remarkable, inspirational and, at times, downright silly adventure. In their month of madness, Tony and his fridge surfed together; entered a batchelor festival; and one of them had sex without the other knowing. The fridge got christened, and they even met the poorest king on Earth. An absurd story of an extraordinary adventure, Round Ireland with a Fridge follows the fearless pair as they battle towards Dublin and a breathtaking finale that is moving, uplifting, and a fitting conclusion to the whole ridiculous affair.

Finally finished this book. Been on my shelf for ages #OffTheShelf2023 This was an OK read, but quite frankly I‘m getting a bit tired of these English young men writing about how much they drink, and trying to make every second sentence funny. We get it, but sometimes less is more. Otherwise entertaining to read about friendly Irish people eager to meet the Fridge Man. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Andrew65 Well done on finishing a book from your self. 👏👏👏 2y

#3books that made me want to travel

Every book makes me want to travel in some form.

I read Round Ireland in the late 90s & it made me want to visit this amazing little island. And when I did (albeit without hitchhiking or a fridge), it was just as awesome as described.

While I did not like Eat Pray Love, it did give me wanderlust to visit all these places.

HHGTTG because I‘d love to intergalactically hitchhike around the cosmos.

Ruthiella Love the inclusion of the Hitchhiker‘s Guide! I‘ve done something similar. 😀 4y

I‘ve had this book on my shelf for years. My mom loved it and I told her I‘d read it. It was a quick read and that was nice, for how challenging reading has been lately. Ultimately, though, while Tony is grateful for the help he gets, he is stuck on superficialities. He evokes the character of the people he meets and the land less readily than people‘s attractiveness.
This book completes Winter of #Booked2019

I thought this was a light humerous book about a man who makes a drunken bet to hitch hike around Ireland with a mini fridge. This book was published in the late 90s when it was still feasible to hitch hike. It seems a lot harder in the age before social media and that's what gives the book its charm.

DivaDiane I gifted my brother with this book without really knowing if it was good. He said it was. I'm glad! 7y
Shadowfat Good choice! It's definitely a fun read. 7y

Kinda sad I only took photos of two of the bookshops in Kinsale, but in my defence I was distracted by all the beautiful books. Also the collie who lives in one of the bookshops with his guitar playing owner- I've never met a cooler person.

On a bet, a British comedian hitchikes around Ireland with a fridge in tow. Hilarious.

Unfortunately, there isn't much more hilarity once you get past the title. There's an amusing encounter with Prince Charles in a rope line, and the book did really crack me up about a dozen other times. But a dozen laughs from an otherwise deeply unfunny 250-page book qualifies as a bomb.

My advice: smile at the story embedded in the title and skip the book.

Sue I'm going to have to read it just because it's Tony Hawks.... 8y
