Stella by Starlight | Sharon M. Draper
When the Ku Klux Klans unwelcome reappearance rattles Stellas segregated southern town, bravery battles prejudice in this New York Times bestselling Depression-era novel that soars (The New York Times Book Review) that School Library Journal called storytelling at its finest in a starred review. Stella lives in the segregated Southin Bumblebee, North Carolina, to be exact about it. Some stores she can go into. Some stores she cant. Some folks are right pleasant. Others are a lot less so. To Stella, it sort of evens out, and heck, the Klan hasnt bothered them for years. But one late night, later than she should ever be up, much less wandering around outside, Stella and her little brother see something theyre never supposed to see, something that is the first flicker of change to come, unwelcome change by any stretch of the imagination. As Stellas communityher worldis upended, she decides to fight fire with fire. And she learns that ashes dont necessarily signify an end.

This is a cute enough story, but it doesn't hold together as tightly as it might have. There are a couple of scenes that just kind of stop, as though the author didn't know how to end them so just moved on. It left me craving resolution. Also, the children are sometimes inconsistent in how they act compared to their ages. In particular, some of their conversations with one another seem too much like how grownups speak (manner, not content).

ImperfectCJ On second thought, cute isn't quite the right word, given the subject matter, although I do find Stella cute. Maybe "interesting" or "endearing," but neither of those is quite right, either. 3y

Cant wait to reread this book with my almost 8-year old. Stella is an 11yo black girl in depression era North Carolina.Issues like the klan, segregation, poll taxes, and intimidation are dealt with an age appropriate manner but one that does not shirk from reality. Stella wants to write and keeps at it despite her difficulty with it. Her parents are wonderful characters and show her her value as a person. Rec the audio on hoopla. #1streadof2020

This historical fiction book is good because uses the authentic language of back then and accurately portrays the ongoing thoughts and actions someone might've made. The subject of touching on KKK and other segregated issues are never easy, and its brought in with some much light and hope that things will get better. The details of it are authentic to its actions and you can tell correct research has been made!

This inspiring HF novel written by NYT Bestselling author, Sharon M. Draper is great for classroom use! To be exact, the story is set in Bumblebee, North Carolina during the 1930s. Stella by Starlight (HF) by Sharon M. Draper has been a NYT Best Seller and was also a 2016 Charlotte Huck Award Winner, and for good reason. I was really happy I chose this book for my personal LC in class and would consider applying that in the future. Classroom application in comments. #LAE3414sp19

cwright I think it could be introduced in 3rd grade but only as an RA. For example, reading sections every day during Black History Month to supplement that curriculum. In later grades, it could still be an RA, but also GR or even LC with set roles relevant to the historical element of the book. I think that depending on class needs, students may or may not be at a point where they could handle reading this independently. 6y
cwright https://sharondraper.com/stella-common-core.pdf This is a lesson plan from the author‘s website with several strategies to deeply analyze the text and historical context that fall in line with CC. 🌌Stella by Starlight is a wonderful read written by Sharon Draper. It steps back into the past and relives a part of history that many textbooks don‘t like to discuss with such a young age. This HF book is an important one to add into a classroom library, not only because of the content that it touches on historically, but because it could be easier for some students to relate to! #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye The main character, Stella, struggles in school and can‘t seem to write what‘s on her mind unless she is out at night. This would make a great choice to read in the month of February since it is Black History Month; not only because of the content of the book but because Sharon Draper is a Corretta Scott King Award winning author! 6y

The New York Times‘ Bestseller, Stella by Starlight, takes you back in time to the 1930s where tensions are running high in the small town of Bumblebee, NC. The Ku Klux Klan has made their way to the town of Bumblebee and is stirring up trouble. Main character, Stella Mills talks about the issues happening in her town through her writing. #LAE3414SP19

Channing_Austin Throughout the story, Stella struggles putting her thoughts down on paper. I believe many students can relate to that, making this HF novel a great read for older students. Author Sharon Draper wrote this book based on her grandmother‘s writing. This novel would be best in LC because students will feel happiness, frustration, hatred, and love while reading. They should be able to share those emotions with others who understand. 6y
Channing_Austin On Sharon Draper‘s website there is a list of discussion questions that would be great for LC. This excellent middle grade novel deals with the heavy topic of the Klan attacking African Americans in 1930s North Carolina. It ends on a hopeful note. My only complaint is that the ending leaves things unresolved. I guess that's better than it being unrealistically positive. The narration of the audiobook is also excellent.
