The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft
The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft | H. P. Lovecraft
23 posts | 14 read | 16 to read
A Slate, and San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of 2014 From across strange aeons comes the long-awaited annotated edition of the twentieth centurys greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale (Stephen King). "With an increasing distance from the twentieth centurythe New England poet, author, essayist, and stunningly profuse epistolary Howard Phillips Lovecraft is beginning to emerge as one of that tumultuous periods most critically fascinating and yet enigmatic figures," writes Alan Moore in his introduction to The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft. Despite this nearly unprecedented posthumous trajectory, at the time of his death at the age of forty-six, Lovecraft's work had appeared only in dime-store magazines, ignored by the public and maligned by critics. Now well over a century after his birth, Lovecraft is increasingly being recognized as the foundation for American horror and science fiction, the source of "incalculable influence on succeeding generations of writers of horror fiction" (Joyce Carol Oates). In this volume, Leslie S. Klinger reanimates Lovecraft with clarity and historical insight, charting the rise of the erstwhile pulp writer, whose rediscovery and reclamation into the literary canon can be compared only to that of Poe or Melville. Weaving together a broad base of existing scholarship with his own original insights, Klinger appends Lovecraft's uncanny oeuvre and Kafkaesque life story in a way that provides context and unlocks many of the secrets of his often cryptic body of work. Over the course of his career, Lovecraft"the Copernicus of the horror story" (Fritz Leiber)made a marked departure from the gothic style of his predecessors that focused mostly on ghosts, ghouls, and witches, instead crafting a vast mythos in which humanity is but a blissfully unaware speck in a cosmos shared by vast and ancient alien beings. One of the progenitors of "weird fiction," Lovecraft wrote stories suggesting that we share not just our reality but our planet, and even a common ancestry, with unspeakable, godlike creatures just one accidental revelation away from emerging from their epoch of hibernation and extinguishing both our individual sanity and entire civilization. Following his best-selling The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, Leslie S. Klinger collects here twenty-two of Lovecraft's best, most chilling "Arkham" tales, including "The Call of Cthulhu," At the Mountains of Madness, "The Whisperer in Darkness," "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," "The Colour Out of Space," and others. With nearly 300 illustrations, including full-color reproductions of the original artwork and covers from Weird Tales and Astounding Stories, and more than 1,000 annotations, this volume illuminates every dimension of H. P. Lovecraft and stirs the Great Old Ones in their millennia of sleep.

As soon as I see the word 'horror' and think about books my brain automatically goes to H.P. Lovecraft.

This book is a beast, ringing in at 850 pages so I won't be reading everything in it this month - but you best bet your favorite biscuits I'ma be hitting up a story or 2...or 3 or 10!

Best description of H.P. Lovecraft I have ever seen. Thank you, Glumshoe on Tumblr: " [...] actually reading Lovecraft is like taking a hike through a fascinating forest when suddenly a flock of birds start intentionally shitting on you. Sure, you see a cool landscape, [...] if not for the inescapable hailstorm of bird droppings [...]"

tpixie That is hilarious 😆 6y
tournevis @tpixie I'm adopting this observation. 6y
tpixie @tournevis i‘ve never read Lovecraft but now this makes me want to knowing this!!! 6y

I found this gem at #BrattleBookshop in #Boston. I plan on memorizing the lyrics and singing them this winter solstice. 😂 #lovecraft #lovecraftian #solstice #carols #songbook #horror #humor #music

alisahar Commenting since I saw your #Boston hashtag. 🙂 I‘m interested in finding Litsyers to do a themed book club in Boston. My latest post has some details. Either way love to connect with fellow Boston people on Litsy! 7y

For as long as I can remember I've enjoyed Mr. Lovecraft and his stories are masterfully creative, bizarre, and creepy. Everything I enjoy. But it took me twice as long to read this time. Because this book was The annotated version and never have I enjoyed him more. If you've never read an annotated version of a book try it out, it's really fun to read then take those little side trips reading the little notes. Hope you take a chance on this.

⚫️I couldn't live a week without a private library - indeed, I'd part with all my furniture and squat and sleep on the floor before I'd let go of the 1500 or so books I possess.⚫️ H.P. Lovecraft

Really enjoyable. Full color illustrations/photos in the hefty intro/forward, with a straight out, albeit brief, acknowledgment of Lovecraft's appalling racism/xenophobia/Antisemitism. Annotations confirm the facts in Lovecraft's stories, so I found them more like trivia rather than illustrating Lovecraft's influences/allusions (Klinger recommends Joshi for that).

This app was suggested to me, it has H.P Lovecraft's stories in ebook and audiobook format. When I started it I got this little message and immediately liked the app! "Cthulhu fhtagn"
Maybe I can finally make it through the New Annoted HP Lovecraft by listening to the audiobooks and later looking up the annotations and ask my Cthulhu plushie about his opinion.

quirkyreader I was thinking about getting the new annotated H.P. book but decided not to. I have a bunch of the IDW Lovecraft Library books and have read many of the stories in other editions. Also, I was spoiled when I was with husband number one. He was a big collector and had many of the original Arkham House books. 8y

In from the library, The New Annotated Lovecraft. I mostly know his work from popular culture, and given the handful of Lovecraft-inspired novels coming out, thought I'd go to the source. #libraryhaul

I am ashamed to admit that I have never read any HP Lovecraft. I am planning to remedy that next year. Suggestions on where to start? (Photo taken from kickstarter)

LectricSheep I loved the audiobook version of At The Mountains of Madness-- very creepy! I like listening to Lovecraft because I find the material a little too repetitive on the page. If I'm listening to it, I appreciate a little repetition, so I don't get lost. 8y
Krisjericho @LectricSheep Thank you! That gives me a place to start. 8y
Caterina Pickman's Model is really short and written in a pretty fun way, that could be a good place to start too! 8y
Krisjericho @Caterina That does sound like it might be a good place to start. Thanks! 8y

I don't read many #shortstories, but I got this a while back and managed to read 3 of them so far:
Dagon, The Statement of Randolph Carter and Beyond the Wall of Sleep.
But this book is so big and heavy I can not take it with me :(

BookishFeminist I feel you! I have the huge b&n hardcover which I also cannot take with me. 8y
BekahB I love this edition! I've been doing the same thing, just reading out of it here and there. 8y

I think #MyBiggestBook is my B&N bound edition of five Charles Dickens novels (almost 1,500 pages). However it's high on a shelf and I was too lazy to get my step ladder. This is probably second in line. Lovecraft's stories are definitely problematic in many ways, but he had an incredible impact on weird fiction/horror. His imagination was fantastic! This annotated edition is a lot of fun to flip through. Great illustrations 😀

brendanmleonard I did some study of Lovecraft in college...I've been meaning to check this annotated collection out! 8y
