Jasper Jones | Craig Silvey
A 2012 Michael L. Printz Honor Book Charlie Bucktin, a bookish thirteen year old, is startled one summer night by an urgent knock on his bedroom window. His visitor is Jasper Jones, an outcast in their small mining town, and he has come to ask for Charlie's help. Terribly afraid but desperate to impress, Charlie follows him into the night. Jasper takes him to his secret glade, where Charlie witnesses Jasper's horrible discovery. With his secret like a brick in his belly, Charlie is pushed and pulled by a town closing in on itself in fear and suspicion. He locks horns with his tempestuous mother, falls nervously in love, and battles to keep a lid on his zealous best friend. In the simmering summer where everything changes, Charlie learns why the truth of things is so hard to know, and even harder to hold in his heart. From the Hardcover edition.

YA novel set in the 70s which addresses racism, bigotry, sexual abuse and dysfunctional families. Silvey does a wonderful job of evoking the atmosphere of small town Australia, the stifling heat and attitudes and the desperation to escape. But he also shows that there are decent people and sometimes it just takes one person to stand up for others to follow.
I loved it, especially Jeffrey Lu.
I look forward to watching the film.

This wasn‘t the mystery/adventure story I expected. Instead it was the coming-of-age tragedy of small town bigotry, family secrets, and a star-crossed love. Intensely sad.

This one was an intense read, but I found the descriptions to be very rich and beautiful. In the end I really enjoyed it, despite its heavy content.

I finished my penultimate book to complete my #LitsyAtoZ challenge this year. Just Y to go.

This book was slow for me. Hard to pick back up when I‘d put it down. There were a handful of events in the book that made the story compelling but the narrative dragged in between them. The side story about the MC‘s best friend turned out to be the best part of the book. I think this book could have been edited down by 100 pages. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

BookishMarginalia Woohoo! Way to go! 6y

Does this ever happen to anyone?

I put the book down to go to sleep and started dreaming as if I were still reading and events were still going on in the book. Finally managed to wake myself up just now to convince myself that what I dreamt was not in the book.

This book is slow for me which is a huge bummer. It‘s my second to last book for me to finish my #LitsyAtoZ for the year and running out of time!

I struggled a little with this one. I'm not sure specifically what I didn't like about it but it didn't really hold my interest. I liked the characters of Jeffrey, Jasper and Eliza but Charlie annoyed me. Sometimes he seemed like a complete child and sometimes his musings were beyond what a usual 13 year old would think.

All the feels of an Australian country town, the honourable, the racist, the evil and thunderous rain on tin roofs. I thoroughly enjoyed this one although Silvey sometimes took his time getting to the crux of the matter. Very believable. #aussiesrule2018

#AndItsAugust #day11 #StartsWithJ I didn't realise how few books actually start with J. Looking through my shelves, there's a lot of S, T, R, a few A & B but not a lot of J. I did find these two though, and one is even a double barrelled J! Jingo is part of Terry Pratchetts Discworld series & Jasper Jones is an Australian novel about two young boys & a dead girl set in Western Australia.

monkeygirlsmama I didn't have nearly as many J titles on my shelves as I would have expected either. 7y

This is in my top five Australian novels and has recently been released as a film. I went to see it recently and was pleased to see such a true adaptation of one of my favourite stories. It was superbly cast and nostalgically Australian with all the mystery, tension and humour of the novel. If you've not read much (any) Australian fiction I would highly recommend this one.

A great piece of YA literature...up until the end that is. While I enjoyed reading most of this book, the ending was a bit of a letdown. Until the last 20 pages, Silvey had done such a masterful job of weaving this tale about Charlie, a young teen in Australia during the 1960s, and how one event catapults him out of his childhood. Without giving away anything, the final pages fell flat compared to the rest of the novel. ⬇️

asiriusreader I think that because the author had tackled such important themes throughout the book, perhaps I was expecting more of an overarching message driven home at the end of the story. And I did feel a lack of resolution about some of the characters. That being said, I absolutely loved the way Silvey wrote this book. I think he did such a fine job capturing the teenage mind and spirit, and of considering the perspective of the outsider in a small town. 8y
Bette I read this awhile ago and don't remember specifics, but I know I loved it. 👍❤️😊 8y
