Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door
Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door | Roy Wenzl, Tim Potter, Hurst Laviana, L Kelly
17 posts | 23 read | 31 to read
For thirty-one years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK"--for "bind them, torture them, kill them"--he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader--a friendly neighbor . . . a devoted husband . . . a helpful Boy Scout dad . . . the respected president of his church.Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than twenty years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare told by the people who were there from the beginning. With newly released documents, evidence, and information--and with the full cooperation, for the very first time, of the Wichita Police Department's BTK Task Force--the authors have put all the pieces of the grisly puzzle into place, thanks to their unparalleled access to the families of the killer and his victims.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought I enjoyed sleep. Why do I read this stuff?! Curiosity? Is my brain broken? After reading his daughter‘s memoir, it felt natural to read about Dennis Rader‘s ultimate takedown. That, of course, includes the painful details of his crimes. I laughed as this book highlighted how truly stupid he was right before being caught. Technological advances will get your ass! May he rot in prison until unusually old. Death would be a respite.

Bklover I love reading this stuff I think I could read true crime all day long. I think my brain‘s broken too! 2y
britt_brooke @Bklover It‘s bizarrely fascinating! 2y

Didn't get to post last night but finished this yesterday. I was never interested in BTK until I read A Serial Killer's Daughter and realized exactly how under the radar Dennis Rader made himself. I mean, he was the guy next door! This was well researched and very in depth. Great book.

Starting a new book today. I‘m a serial killer enthusiast and I love to read true crime. This is one of those cases that I find absolutely fascinating.

I was 4 years old when BTK began killing. My Mother grew up in Wichita and my Grandparents lives there until their deaths. My Grandmother worked at the Sedgwick County Courthouse. I remember overheating the adults talking about the murders over the years when they thought I was asleep. I spent many nights scared that he might kill my family. I am glad he was finally caught in 2005 and will die in prison.

I listened to this as an audiobook, which might have been part of why it wasn't a pick. At times with all the information being presented, I found myself drifting while listening and not retaining all the details. Several times I had to back-up and listen to a section again. I might revisit it one day in print form.

The audiobook was good. Half of it focuses on the police working to capture BTK and half focuses on Denis Raider, the BTK killer.

ljuliel This guy was frightening. Probably the scariest serial killer I‘ve ever read about, mainly because he blended in so well for so many years. Had an ordinary life with a family, kept a steady job, church, scouts, etc. Nothing seemed to set off any flags with him. If he wouldn‘t have made the mistake on the church computer, I wonder if they would have ever caught him. It‘s also unusual that he stopped for such a long time then started again. Strange 5y
LauraJ @ljuliel I agree. Makes you wonder if you‘ve ever crossed paths with a serial killer! 5y
ljuliel Well, I‘d say the odds are that some people might. The majority of serial killers I‘ve read about were pretty freaky, odd or unusual, so I think most of them would at least set off a few warning signals that the guy was ODD. The other one that reminds me a lot of BTK was John List. I think he was a bit strange , but I doubt anyone outside his house knew he was a bit off center. 5y

One more true crime before I switch back to a fiction book. I was going to after the last book but I just listened to a podcast about Dennis Rader.

This was not any easy read- you may want to skip my review...this book contains explicit details of rape and torture including of a child. I had a very hard time reading it- and did not read it at night. It also indicates that being a victim of a Serial killer is like winning Shirley Jackson‘s lottery. There are places where the editing was choppy, and I wish I had taken notes to keep track. But I loved the human side of the law enforcement, cont.

Chrissyreadit The great part of this book was the focus on the path to catch him, the families of the officers involved were front and center and the time and effort clearly detailed. I would not have read this if I had not wanted to read his daughters book, and i felt I needed to know the story first. 6y
MolliesaurusRex I‘m a huge true crime fan, & what I loved about this one was the focus on the reporters and law enforcement who were working towards catching him. It‘s not something you find often in books about serial killers & it was so refreshing. 6y
Chrissyreadit @MolliesaurusRex yes- I completely agree. I read that Landwehr died of cancer just a few years ago and my heart actually hurt for his family. 6y

MolliesaurusRex @Chrissyreadit that is heartbreaking.😭 he certainly seemed like an absolutely wonderful person. 6y
Chrissyreadit @EadieB did you finish the daughters book? It is not what I expected. A lot of my thoughts include irritation- I‘m not sure how to write a review for it. 6y
EadieB @Chrissyreadit Yes I read the daughter‘s book first. I liked it a lot. I can‘t read this book until I finish some of my library books as they will be due soon and that might be mid-March. I feel I know most of what happened because the daughter‘s book included what killings happened when in the daughter‘s life. (edited) 6y
Chrissyreadit @EadieB it is a very different perspective. I will be very excited to read your thoughts when you have the comparison. 6y
yeahnonotagain I just started this book and my God, is it intense! 5y
Chrissyreadit @ReadingOverSleeping yes- intense and disturbing. I had a difficult time with reading the daughters book because this book is so explicit. 5y
yeahnonotagain @Chrissyreadit Im waiting for that one to be returned to the library so I can read it! Hoping it's not as graphic 5y
Chrissyreadit @ReadingOverSleeping not graphic at all in my opinion. 5y
yeahnonotagain @Chrissyreadit thanks Chrissy! 5y

@EadieB I probably should not be reading this at night. Have you read it? I‘m trying to read this before the daughters story.

EadieB @Chrissyreadit I finished the daughter‘s story today. I just paged thru the book but I agree too scary for night reading. 6y
sammisho My uncle is the warden where BTK is imprisoned! 6y
Chrissyreadit @sammisho wow. I was too young to grasp how awful he was. This book is horrifying. Honestly I‘m surprised he‘s still alive. 6y

Crazeedi This might be too much for me, even though I like reading some books like this 6y
Chrissyreadit @Crazeedi to me this is more descriptive and intense than Ann Rules book about Ted Bundy. I will not read it at night. 6y
Cinfhen I have the daughters book to read!! I think I‘ll pass on this one 😱I‘ll check out wiki first😉 6y
Bklover I read this recently. I really enjoyed (?!?! Maybe not the right word) it. @sammisho That is so cool! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Bklover 😳your comment gave me an opportunity to use a different emoji 😜 I do think the style and presentation are good, I do not like being in the killers head, and maybe I‘m more aware now of why my parents were overprotective in the 80‘s. 6y

Bailedbailed

I just couldn‘t with this book. I had hopes to completely finish it before the new year, but I‘ve decided it‘s not fair to have my “last” book be this.
The writing style is just poor, the story line is choppy, and what should be an interesting look about a serial killer is just plain boring. 😒

Reviewsbylola It‘s not cool to end the year on a bad note so I totally get why you bailed! 6y

I wouldn't normally recommend a book like this but the reasons that I have listed I do not like the book are reasons that somebody else may indeed like it. So with that in mind, I would recommend this book to people who like cops and robbers, mystery, and true crime.

parasolofdoom I definitely have some books like that. "Here! I hated this but I actually think YOU would love it!" Most notable example being The Martian -- I didn't care for it but I absolutely knew my husband would and he did. 6y
parasolofdoom PS you're The Reading Mermaid on Facebook right? I just noticed your screenname and realized I must have started following you there from here 😂. 6y
