Bailedbailed

All the descriptions of the women were so sexist and the author went out of his way to describe women in that way too much and too often. Bailed after 2 chapters. Would not recommend. Too bad as the premise was interesting and it‘s rare to find a book with literary aspirations written in the first person.

bookishbitch There are too many great books out there to waste time reading crappy ones. Glad you bailed. 13mo
iread2much @bookishbitch thank you. I am too, I have way too many books to read to waste time 😅 13mo

I think I‘ve had this book for twenty years and finally read it. I don‘t always think the book is better than the movie, but this story needs text to be fully realized. If it seems like the characters are explaining too much it‘s probably because the author wants to familiarize his readers with the books he mentions, mostly The Three Musketeers which I haven‘t read. I love books about books and meta fiction. I loved the puzzle in this mystery 👇

Palimpsest and found it smart. My favorite part is when the protagonist visits bookbinders who deal with antique books. I didn‘t care for the objectifying descriptions of the women characters. It‘s enough to say she looks like Kim Novak, not she had enormous breasts etc. I rolled my eyes and moved on savoring the intelligent parts. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved this audiobook. It was right up my alley. Detective work mixed with the occult, travel, sex, discussion of other classic literature and so much more. Shout out to @TheAromaofBooks for the #bookspin challenge.

“A cross between Umberto Eco and Anne Rice”. SOLD!

Found a nice little indie bookshop near Pike Place Market. I wish I had more time to browse but they were closing.

I finished this book a couple of weeks ago and I‘m still digesting it. It was fantastic. There is an old movie loosely based on this book: “The Ninth Gate” with Johnny Depp, and it‘s not nearly as good as the book. Now I want to get my hands on a Spanish copy since the author is from Spain.

Took a walk to my local Little Library to drop off a copy of The Woman In The Window by AJ Finn, and I was able to pick up The Club Dumas! Bookish fortune is in my favor today, it seems 🤗

Just finished this book - I couldn't put it down. Mystery, feuilleton and unexpected villain(s?). #mystery #spanishreads

GarthRanzz I loved this book! Have you ever seen the movie version, The Ninth Gate? 6y
CarolynM My husband loves this guy's books. I'll have to tell him about the movie @GarthRanzz 6y
Xeroaa13 @GarthRanzz No, I did not see the movie, but it is from Roman Polanski with Johnny Depp, I should give a try! @CarolynM does your husband recommend another one of this author's books? 6y
CarolynM He says this one is his favourite 6y
Xeroaa13 Thanks @CarolynM ! I will research it :) I have the Fencing master in ebook format. Any thoughts on it? 6y

When I started the book I did not realize that the movie “The Ninth Gate” was based of the book. The book is good I liked the literary detective work that was done in story. I like the movie but the book is better and more interesting.

saresmoore I think I prefer Milton's, too, although Mephistopheles is a fabulous character. I wonder how The Master & Margarita will add to this (obviously hell-bent & possibly satanist 😜) conversation. 7y
vivastory @Laalaleighh I like it quite a bit, although the female characters are poorly written. 7y
vivastory @Reggie Yep! The book is quite a bit better imo 7y
vivastory @Texreader It's a quick read 7y
vivastory @saresmoore I definitely prefer Milton's. I love the Inferno (I've read it three times) but Satan is fairly one dimensional in it. Milton's is definitely the accidental hero of Paradise Lost. 7y
DGRachel This was the first book I read by this author. I don't remember much, other than I really enjoyed it, and started buying up all of his books. 😊 7y
vivastory @DGRachel What others do you recommend? 7y
Laalaleighh @saresmoore is there going to be a master and the margarita read through? 7y

Laalaleighh @saresmoore @vivastory is there a post about it anywhere? (edited) 7y
saresmoore @Laalaleighh No post; it's very informal. :) We just both hadn't read it yet. It will be fun to discuss, I think! 7y

Mehso-so

It is an easy to read mystery story centered around The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas (which I haven't read yet). A hand written chapter of this book sets in motion a lot of action mixed with occult aspects and satan worshipping. I read it almost in one go, wanted the mystery to be solved. So that is good.
Now I know I am a bit disappointed and guess that I won't remember this book for long. #1001books

Skulduggery surrounds the rare handwritten chapter of The Three Musketeers held by rare book man Corso - and it closely resembles some of the action therein. Corso is also investigating the remaining three copies of the Book of the Nine Doors of the Kingdom of Shadows, a purported manual for summoning the devil. Of course, it's possible that the devil may be far closer than he thinks. #currently reading

My pick for character who is better in the movie is Corso, from The Club Dumas. The first hour of this movie is genius! It kind of falls apart after that, but Johnny Depp was amazing as Corso #octphotochallenge
