As most of you know, I have a serious 1-click addiction. I have hundreds upon hundreds of unread e-books. Books that I was oh so excited to discover on super sale, but have since languished on my Kindle(s). 😬 I‘m going to make an effort to intentionally reach back into the proverbial stacks a few times a month. This was first up. I loved Pochoda‘s Visitation Street and while I didn‘t love this one, it was solid. 👇🏼

JackOBotts Same...100% feel ya on this. 3y
MicheleinPhilly You could feel the California desert heat and feel the desperation of the souls that call Skid Row home. Multiple characters whose lives intertwine/intersect. 👍🏼 3y

I really enjoyed this book. I thought from all the reviews that I might not like it, but I really liked it! It is the story of 4 main characters in California and how their lives, which seem so different intertwine. Like the reviews say there are a lot of characters, but I did not have a issue keeping them separate.

BookishTrish I loved it and would read it again 6y

3 Stars (maybe 2.5) on goodreads. I don‘t think I‘ll bother with another from this author. There was one character that didn‘t get the full resolution the other characters got. I also felt there were too many to keep track of and so it felt chaotic and scattered & you could only be so emotionally invested. The book was on the long side too.

This book had a Michael Connelly blurb so I had to check it out. I listened to it and I have to admit it had a few to many similar characters for me to keep them all straight, I do better reading when there are a lot of characters so I think I missed a bit of the story. But it was done well and the story was pretty different from what I usually like. It is not at all similar to Michael Connelly's type of writing.

Stories like this involving characters whose lives intersect can be so hit or miss, and Wonder Valley falls into the latter category. It tries so hard to be smart and layered and profound, but it never transcends its own shallow banality.

Pochoda's prose is fine, yet it often feels manufactured. The connections between the characters are forced and lack the nuance that would make a story like this successful.

This might just be the best #audiobook I listened to in 2017. I walked up to 22,000 steps a day so I could have more time to listen. It's like if Michael Cunningham's The Hours was LA noir.

To describe this book in one word: gritty. Six characters' lives converge after a young man runs naked, yes, naked, through rush hour LA traffic as he escapes his past in which he lived in a cult of sorts, run by his father. The setting, the underbelly of LA, is described so vividly, and the characters, flawed yet likable.🌟🌟🌟🌟

#TBRtemptation post 2! #BEA17 edition! Slated for a November, 2017, release. A portrait of contemporary Los Angeles. A typical morning commute traffic jam, except for the guy who is swiftly running between the cars naked. And that's the beginning of a story filled with all sorts of characters in disarray--like juvie Ren who's looking for his Skid Row mom, and 14-year-olds Owen & James living in a desert commune. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
