City of Endless Night
City of Endless Night | Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
35 posts | 38 read | 10 to read
What begins as a manhunt for the missing daughter of a wealthy tech billionaire becomes something altogether different when the young woman's body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse in Kew Gardens, Queens, the head nowhere to be found. Soon it becomes clear there are at least two killers on the loose--one responsible for the young woman's death, another responsible for the mutilation. A pair of such dastardly killers requires a team of equally talented investigators. Luckily, both Vincent D'Agosta and Special Agent Pendergast are back in town. D'Agosta hopes that this latest case will distract Pendergast from Constance Green's decision to depart New York for Tibet after the events of THE OBSIDIAN CHAMBER--and provide Pendergast the opportunity to work a case back on his home turf for the first time in years. But neither is prepared to face a team of killers as diabolical as this. It will take all of Pendergast and D'Agosta's intelligence and strength simply to match wits with their latest adversaries--let alone stay alive. DESCRIPTION NOT FINAL

A great addition to the Pendergast series. A return to form with an interesting mystery at the core. I enjoyed the storyline, and was surprised by the reveal at the end. I liked that this was a pure mystery, with none of the Constance/Diogenes drama. I look forward to more books like this one.

Twainy I loved Bloodless. They do seem to be trying to return to Relic-like mysteries …. 2y

This book was one hell of a ride. A vulnerable Pendergast is not an effective Pendergast. I was biting my nails. It was fun to see the interactions between D‘Agosta and Pendergast, again, though. So, we have murder, of course, an arrogant reporter, a frustratingly unprofilable killer, several forms of madness, and a bizarre ending. I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book #17 in the Agent Pendergast series. Wow, the Pendergast get put through the ringer on this one. It was a stressful ‘who done it‘ all the way to the end.

That Pendergast book is part of my husband's favourite series

Jonathan van Ness' memoir belongs to my daughter's collection. She plans to own all the books written by the fun hosts!

@Librarybelle and @Megabooks you spy any books with flowers or leaves on the cover?? Hope you will play along 😊😊

Finally getting around to reading this. It‘s been waiting in the wings for an unnaturally long time. Unlike me to take so long. Usually Pendergast zooms to the top of the list.

I'm starting a new thing. The official
#PileByTheTV #TBRbingo 😊
I NEED to read or find homes for all the books piled up by the TV in the living room. They are mocking me every time I look at them. 😁
However, I am NOT even going to try and pretend to implement a buying ban until I get Bingo; I'm just trying to work my way through the stacks this year.

LeslieO Fun! 5y
inthegreensandblues 😂 Love it. I need to do Piles by the Bed Bingo. 5y
JamieArc Bingo cards in my bujo are the best way to get me through books I already own (or really want to read but get pushed back because of compulsive tendencies). 5y

Mehso-so

I didn‘t find this one as engrossing as I did some earlier books in the series. The final showdown was a bit drawn-out; the denouement unfulfilling. I was, however, happy to see more of Pendergast and to see how he‘s been doing.

The seventeenth part of the epic about #Pendergast! To be honest-like the book!😀 When I read about FBI special agent Pendergast, I thought I was watching a TV series! And for me, the plot of the book wasn't as important as the desire to know what will happen to the personal life of Pendergast?) At the end of the book was the epilogue...waiting for 18 part)😎

LOVED this Pendergast novel. Finally Preston & Child wrote another Pendergast story without including sci-fi as many do. My only minor complaint (which is partly a SPOILER) is that the plot line is very similar to the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” which I teach to my 9th graders. Aside from that, loved the book and can‘t wait for the next, especially after the epilogue with Constance!

So finished this one tonight. I must say I do really like how the writing styles of the authors melds together so well. This one wasn't a heart pausing as say The Relic but it was a nicely pieced story with some nice turns. I did find myself somehow going from what seemed like chapter 5 to 33 in no time yesterday.

A dear friend, who is a HUGE fan of Pendergast, bought an extra signed copy for the husband.

He has faithfully followed the series since I passed a library copy to him, sometime last year. I had never placed so many book reservations with the library before! 😅🤣😅

Any other #Pendergast fans here??

MaleficentBookDragon I love Preston & Child. I read them all ever since Relic grabbed me. However, as much as I enjoy Pendergast, I really ❤️ their stand alones like Relic and 6y
BookishMe @MaleficentBookDragon oh, I thought Relic is the first book in the Pendergast series though I hear he appears only towards the end of the book. Will check if the husband has read the other novel. This latest installment (he's been totally glued to it ;)) sounds great and husband recommended I first read 6y
MaleficentBookDragon @BookishMe Yes Pendergast is in Relic but it‘s not all about him. I fell in love with D‘Agosta in that book too. Some of the other characters show up in a few more books like Thunderhead and Mount Dragon. I also recommend 6y
MaleficentBookDragon @BookishMe Does your husband read Janes Rollins? If not, he might enjoy his Sigma series. Again, I prefer his stand alone novels, but love all his books. The first Sigma is 6y
BookishMe @MaleficentBookDragon thank you for the great suggestions! 6y

Not as good as others by them- seemed a little sparse on plot, detail and....interest? Felt like it was done by a computer...I finished it, did not read the ending while still on Chapter 5 but not sure I can recommend...

January is jigsaw puzzle month at Barnes & Noble. Grabbed a few more (the B&N exclusives with book covers are so much fun, the NatGeo is Shakespeare‘s Britain, and I ❤️ Pixar) and a couple new books. I‘ve been reading Iron Gold on my Kindle, but I had to have a physical copy for my shelves. 😍

I did not want to put City of Endless Night down! I loved the combination of D‘Agosta being at his wit‘s end and Pendergast being peculiarly vulnerable. After so many books of the typical Pendergast, it was nice to see that in this story he was not his usual self and I loved that! ..….See the rest of this review and more at The Genre Minx Book Reviews www.thegenreminx.com #bookreviewer #TheGenreMinxBookReviews
