I mean I am just flabbergasted. This is horrendously racist. It was a Pulitzer finalists and has over 4⭐on good reads, by chapter 4 I had to quit or I was going to throw it across the room. The authors constant use of the words savages and hostiles to refer to the Native people even 12 years ago should have been stopped by the editor. I finally quit when he made cannibalism sound normal to tribes with no proof 👇👇👇

ChaoticMissAdventures And when he said that the tribes "They fought over hunting grounds, to be sure, but they also made a good deal of brutal & bloody war that was completely unnecessary". All this while calling the white "settlers" amazingly resilient". Just horrendous and I bought this and now I am mad because what do I do with the book that is legit trash. 2y
DrexEdit 😨 shows how much the cultural context has changed even since 2010! 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kristin_Reads yes! This is on my list this year along with Braiding Sweetgrass. I also bought Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee but I am nervous to pick it up, I see there is a counter book to it called 2y

An eye-opening history of the American West. After reading this work, you will gain a good understanding in how the mighty Comanche were defeated and the times they lived in.

Where to begin? This book is heavily researched and well written and chronicles a compelling time of US history in great detail. I can see why it won a Pulitzer prize, but it is also obvious that it was written in 2010. There are dozens of passages that were extremely insensitive & hard to get through; almost DNFed multiple times. Though the story kept me going and I‘m glad I finished it but I will stick to #ownvoices histories for awhile.

SamAnne Same, same, same. Appreciated learning the history but the cringe worthy racism was too much. The Comanche are always doing “savage acts.? The Whites/European colonizers? Oh, they are just defending themselves. 3y
Texreader Sounds like a topic I‘d love. As a youngster I was told my Parker side of my family was related, but the genealogist I became confirmed it wasn‘t true. But I did become very interested in the story. So I‘m curious about your rating and the low score on Litsy. Hmmm. Should I stack it? 3y
Julsmarshall Exactly how I felt @SamAnne . @Texreader I think you should give it a try (maybe borrow from the library) and see how you feel. The story is compelling and well researched, just some of the language and points of view are racist and skewed. I think if a reader also searches out #ownvoices and Native perspectives to balance out the point of view and reads it with a critical eye, I think it may be valuable. Ultimately I‘m glad I read it. 3y

I have a week off from classes and I am so excited about all of the reading I‘m going to get done. Tonight I‘m back into Empire of the Summer Moon, and though I‘m finding it very interesting, for a Pulitzer finalist I expected it to be a little more sensitive when talking about indigenous peoples.

Yes, my Christmas tree is lopsided 😂 I love natural trees though because they‘re all unique🎄🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Very interesting history of Quanah Parker, the many tribes and bands, and life during this time period. I listened to this book and it felt like I was taking an intense Native American history course. I liked that since I grew up and live in the areas mentioned in the book, I could easily visualize the trek of the Comanches and other tribes. (Cont‘d in comments)

CKtheLibrarian The story of Quanah trying to find his mother‘s grave is heartbreaking. What surprised me while listening to this book is how the narrator said the words "Brazos," "short-lived," and "Pecos" but pronounced the town of Boerne correctly--ha! (edited) 6y
CKtheLibrarian Most everyone who lives in this area seems to be related to Cynthia Ann/Quanah so this historical biography is fascinating to learn about and has created an itch for me to visit Cache, OK to see his Star House and visit the gravestones of Cynthia Ann and Quanah. Put this on your list to read (or listen to if you want to hear the incorrect way of saying Brazos and Pecos...ha). 6y

This book took me a while but I still enjoyed it. I went to school for a while in Quanah, TX so we were taught the history of Quanah Parker and the Comanche People. (The picture and other items are Navaho.)

#Riotgrams #day9 #NativeOrIndigenousReads While this isn't written by an indigenous author,it is an enthralling read about the rise & fall of the Comanches & about Quanah Parker, the last chief of the tribe.Quanah was the son of a full blood Comanche warrior & Cynthia Ann Parker,a white woman who was stolen from her family at the age of 9 & grew up in the tribe.Quanah was an interesting figure, a fierce fighter who ended up living on a reservation.

Grrlbrarian I know I'll be eating plenty on my yogurt in the mornings for a while, @Aims42 - and maybe drying some more to put on salads with spicy-sweet candied pecans & goat cheese. Beyond that: might just let inspiration strike! 7y

Aims42 @Grrlbrarian Yum!!! My mom would freeze them and she'd make cherry crumbles from them. Never thought to dry them 👍🏻 7y

readinginthedark I read some of this one for my Literary Genre class on Captivity Narratives in college, but I don't remember much about it. Is it good on audio? 7y
Grrlbrarian I'm not super far in, @readinginthedark - maybe three or four chapters - but it's fascinating thus far. The narrator has a good voice and that helps too! 7y

Once again I have proven that it is impossible for me to just window shop on a book site. They will end up finding my body crushed underneath a mountain of tbr books in my library, they'll need sniffer dogs to find me under the piles and piles of amazing books. Readergrrl On my summer TBR pile. When I was in 8th grade, I found a copy of Ride the Wind at a friend's house. The cover intrigued me and, well, I was in middle school😉. Fictionalized account of Quanah Parker's mother, Cynthia Ann. Fun read not to be taken too seriously by historical or cultural scholars. 8y

Well written and will change the way you understand the war between the settlers and the first people of Texas. I don't read westerns, but I love history and this was a great way to gain a better understanding of the Wild Wild West.
