Marvelous. Peter continues to have a hazardous but fascinating time encountering the fantastical and magical in London whilst solving murder mysteries, attempting to apply science and police procedure to the absurd, and introducing the reader to snippets of London's history and architecture. The overarching plot that has continued through the series has some appreciable momentum in this entry as well. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 A good balance of wry asides and moments with Nightingale and other recurring characters. I love this world, I love how Aaronovitch writes, I'm happy to continue in this series. Also happy to find that the library not having the audiobook for this book was a blip, and having put a hold on the next in the series, I can look forward to being regaled with the future adventures of Peter Grant in the mellifluous tones of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith once again. 🥰 8h
julesG Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's narration is chef's kiss. Even when I actually read one of the novels I have his voice in my head. 2h

Okay I‘m really enjoying this series… but this Leslie character is something else smh I mean come on already… even though it‘s a great read talk about slippery characters … now I just have to finish the series because I have to know ..

julesG Leslie is not my favourite character. Actually, I think that my favourite female character is Peter's mother. 🤣🤣🤣 2w

If I hadn't started this at eleven at night, I would have finished it in one day. Really enjoying the wit and history tidbits as before, appreciate that the themes are finally connecting up from earlier books. This just overall reads really smooth and I can see myself coming back to comfort read. Did see the twist a while before the mc though, and wasn't sure this one properly resolved the main case?

Back to form after a few OK entries, things really ramp up in this book. As always, I enjoyed the little nods to ancient london wrapped into the plot, as fantastical as ever and Im a little bit in love with Nightingale and his casual badassery. Also, i stole the kids crayons and drew a picture of a tree worthy of a primary school art project. If the kids ask, the circles are apples. : )

Jeremy Beaumont-Jones had been lucky enough to be born rich. He wasn't in the mad oligarch class but once you're past a certain point, the sheer weight of your money sucks in wealth like a financial singularity. If you're sensible enough not to blow it on race horses, cocaine or musical theatre, then it becomes a perpetual-motion money making machine.

Read this one while sick as I couldn't concentrate on anything serious. Always a joy to visit this world, but my, this one is plot HEAVY. A lot happens - maybe too much. Or maybe I need to reread it with a non-fevered brain. In the + column, more about non-Newtonian magicians (i.e. women!) &, as mentioned, real plot progress. But not enough Beverly or the rivers in general. And not as atmospheric as some of the others. Still a cracking good read!

Managed to get another book read between uni assignments. Not as good as the one with the invisible killer unicorns, changelings and faery realms, but a very worthy addition to series and it did progress a plot thread continuing from the first book. Aaronovitch is consistently good and I love his wry wit.

Okay, so there was another novella first! And it's not in the database, so this is tagged as The Hanging Tree although it takes place between that one and the next one.

A delightful little romp searching for a magical disturbance in the British Library.

I was left charmed and with so, SO many questions about the lives of magical archivists. And wanting another side series. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

A drug scandal and a long lost ledger combine in unexpected ways for Peter Grant.

We get to meet different types of magical practioners, including a matrilineal line (also hello, I would like a side series just of Caroline please and thank you) and of course the American ones are entitled dicks. 😂

And the Faceless Man is finally unmasked. I can't wait to jump into the next one. Except I'll be all caught up! 😭

I love these books; the narrator is fantastic! Unfortunately, once I listen to the next one, I‘ll be caught up. 😞 In The Hanging Tree, we meet the American version of the supernatural police. They are, of course (sigh), Ugly Americans when they‘re in London. We also learn just a tad bit more about Nightingale, whose name, I suspect, isn‘t actually Nightingale— other magical people refer to him as The Nightingale; maybe that‘s a title? #audiowalk

Has anyone read the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch? Really want to read it, but our library only has the sixth book in the series...🧐
How important is the reading order? Can I start with this one to see if I like his writing? Or should I start at the beginning? Thanks!!

PickwickPlockPlock Hi, the reading order is important. You will spoil some big twists, and I doubt the book will make much sense without reading the others first. 6y

🎧 The sixth book in the Rivers of London/Peter Grant series is a fix for those who love the series: All the usual suspects are here and there is, of course an exciting scene involving massive property destruction, but the author has toned down the architectural stuff.

Lady Tyburn calls in her marker from Wizard/PC Peter Grant (ref ‘Whispers Underground‘ Book #3) and sets the plot into action

And of course the audiobook narrator is perfect.

🎧 Next up in my TBL2Q (To Be Listened To Queue) is a return to Ben Aaronovitch‘s urban fantasy series featuring PC Peter Grant (who is also a wizard novitiate.) Judging from the book‘s cover, it looks like we‘re heading to the Hyde Park/Knightsbridge area of London!

Kobna Holbrook-Smith is the audiobook narrator who has achieved the distinction of having *become* the lead character🙂

The sixth in the PC Peter Grant series finds Peter trying to honor a “favor” for Lady Tyburn, a river goddess with major attitude and serious connections. His nemesis must be dealt with and he‘s putting together a procedural manual for what other officers should do when confronted with the supernatural. A fun and witty story.
