Keep Her Safe
Keep Her Safe: A Novel | Sophie Hannah
LIANE MORIARTY says that No one writes twisted, suspenseful novels quite like Sophie Hannah. Packed with twists and clues, simmering with tension, this electrifying new thriller shows why. She's the most famous murder victim in America. What if she's not dead? Pushed to the breaking point, Cara Burrows flees her home and family and escapes to a five-star spa resort she can't afford. Late at night, exhausted and desperate, she lets herself into her hotel room and is shocked to find it already occupied by a man and a teenage girl. A simple mistake at the front desk... but soon Cara realizes that the girl she saw alive and well in the hotel room is someone she can't possibly have seen: the most famous murder victim in the country, Melody Chapa, whose parents are serving natural life sentences for her murder. Cara doesn't know what to trust everything she's read and heard about the case, or the evidence of her own eyes. Did she really see Melody? And is she prepared to ask herself that question and answer it honestly if it means risking her own life?

I've been reading a lot of mysteries lately, and have had Sophie Hannah recommended to me several times. I enjoyed DYSM, and got through it very quickly - it's confusing and perhaps a tad convoluted in places, but there are some fantastic twists, and it's a great choice if you like books that leave you reeling once you finish the last page...

I'm a long time fan of Sophie Hannah, but this was disappointing. Just too convuluted and the motives of the lead characters weren't convincing /coherent.

Well that last bit creeped me out😨 works well as an #audiobook with the lush descriptions of a resort in Arizona as well as the tv show segments. Took a few chapters to get a hang of with the shifting narration and to lose the chicklit vibes. Made for an entertaining listen while packing. Yeah, creepy that final bit 😮 #mommyreads #crime #thriller

This was my first time reading a book written by Sophie Hannah so I have no other works of hers to compare this novel to. However, first 1/2 of the novel was slow-moving. It wasn‘t until the latter half of the novel that the storyline became captivating. Additionally, there were many chapters that had a “script” like entry, which were annoying to read. Made the story longer than needed. Didn‘t seem to add much to the overall story

There aren't enough words for how much I hated this book. Everything about it was god awful. The storyline, the characters and the writing. Cara was quite possibly the worst whingiest character I've ever come across and I cringed through the majority of the dialogue and descriptions in the writing. One of the worst books I've ever read.

So far...not a fan. Cara is the whingiest character I've come across for a while. Hoping it picks up soon 😕😒

I found this quite an interesting and compelling story. It‘s a little different! There are some benevolent kidnappers which I found quite bemusing. There are also some things which didn‘t always add up for me. However, I did enjoy it. I like the writing style and I think it‘s cleverly plotted even if there are a few grey areas. It has an artful and brilliant twist at the end which turned the book around for me and gives food for thought.

3.5 ⭐️

Finished this one for my book club. The story really wasn‘t my cuppa tea, but I finished it. If it wasn‘t for the club, I‘d probably bail on it. I‘d rate it a 3/5.

The first bit of this book was hard to enjoy, but once I got about 1/2 of the way in I couldn‘t put it down. I loved that this book incorporated multiple plots with different styles of writing because it kept me hooked and wanting to know more. The characters were easy to love and kept the novel interesting.

This was just bad. I usually like Sophie Hannah‘s hyperbolic crime novels, but this one was a dud. From the lack of even the most basic understanding of the American legal system, to an unnecessarily convoluted plot to the silly characters, this one was not much fun at all.

Crazeedi I liked a couple of hers, then was disappointed too! 7y

Sophie Hannah‘s stand-alone psychological thriller has some interesting things to say about the US justice system and how the media can distort high profile cases, leading to miscarriages of justice, but the story is hampered by a main character who never behaved in a credible way for me and a plot filled with contrivances and flat side characters such that I didn‘t care about the resolution.

It took me a while to get into this one and I almost bailed a few times. I‘m not OCD but the random tv show scripts and journal/book entries throughout the book drove me CRAZY. I may have liked it a little better without those.

Took me a while to get into this and at the end thought maybe I‘m over this type of book or maybe I‘m not a Sophie Hannah fan. I‘ve had a go at two of her books now. She has written a lot so I might read one more. Any recommendations?

Sorry for making multiple posts, but I‘m catching up on reviewing books I read on vacation! This one was a thriller (maybe leaning more towards mystery than thriller) with colorful characters who kept me engaged. Not as shocking as some endings I‘ve read but I personally did not guess it. I have one more comment that I‘m putting as a spoiler below, if you‘ve read the book. Overall, I recommend it!

Kristyngansen I enjoyed this, too. It was a little different than I expected, but I liked it. 🙂 7y
LiteraryinPA What did people think about the revelation on the last page?? Personally the ambiguous ending made me like the book more. 7y

Oh, I‘m going to have a book hangover after reading this one! It was so suspenseful and I absolutely couldn‘t put it down. Read it over the course of one day and was enthralled by the murder plot line of a victim of a murder from 7 years ago possibly being seen alive. It was excellent all the through to the last line of the book. Wow!

I started off being completely into this one. I love a good thriller even though this one felt familiar (as they all seem to lately) but I was into it until I hit somewhere around the halfway mark and it derailed big time. I feel like the ending was rushed and scattered and it felt very sloppy. In an overcrowded market of thrillers, this one isn‘t a stand out. Meh.

I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and the internet and talk show transcripts kept it interesting. I did find some of the plot points to be very far fetched, which at times brought me out of the story. However, overall it was a fun read.
