Long Way from Verona
Long Way from Verona | Jane Gardam
Jane Gardam's marvelous stories of young girls on the threshold of womanhood--God on the Rocks and Crusoe's Daughter--have delighted fans and critics alike. These -modern classics- (The Independent) are now joined by a new novel that is equally fresh and genuine, comic and touching. Jessica Vye introduces herself with an enigmatic pronouncement: -I ought to tell you at the beginning that I am not quite normal, having had a violent experience at the age of nine.- A revered author has told Jessica that she is, beyond all doubt, a born writer. This proves an accurate prediction of the future, one that indelibly colors her life at school and her preception of the world. Jessica has always known that her destiny would be shaped by her refusal to conform, her compulsion to tell the absolute truth, and her dedication to observing the strange wartime world that surrounds her. What she doesn't know, however, is that the experiences and ideas that set her apart will also lead her to a new and wholly unexpected life. Told with grace and inimitable wit, A Long Way to Verona is a wise and vivid portrait of adolescent discovery and impending adulthood.

This was the #EuropaCollective pick for September, which I've finally read. I ended up liking it, but I can understand why not everyone did. Jessica isn't terribly likeable at the beginning and the plot doesn't seem to go anywhere. But, it started working for me around the time of the house party. Jessica changes and matures. This won't be a favorite, but I enjoyed it. (The book for December has been shipped, so maybe I'll read that one on time!)

I enjoyed this #europacollective I like a precocious tween narrative ( I was getting Harriet the Spy and Flavia de Luce vibes at different points despite there being no mystery in this) Jessica Vye made me laugh and cringe in equal measures.

jlhammar Yes, definitely some Flavia vibes! 1mo

I‘ve got about 10 jobs around the house started ( dishes, laundry, seasonal clothes change over, thanksgiving table decorating, getting garbage and recycling sorted for pick up tomorrow, meal planning, goodwill piles and I should clean bathrooms) but I‘m freezing ( it‘s 14°C today) and I just want to drink tea and read

AmyG Ha…I have my house chores to do and I thought the same….I just want to read my book. 👊🏻 1mo
marleed Same. I just tested positive for Covid an hour ago. I feel fine but need to quarantine 5 days. I‘m right now making a list of a pile of things to do in my house until next Monday morning. I‘m pretending creating the list is more productive than getting up and getting done things that are very obvious. 1mo
mcctrish @marleed well it is important to be organized and making a list is the first step ( put it on the list and then you ✔️ are underway 🤣🤣 ) 1mo

Just not feeling it. 😏 Reading life is short, like summer is in the north.

I‘m sure it‘s me - I rarely enjoy reading teen angst.

jlhammar That‘s too bad. Good choice though if you‘re not enjoying it. 2mo
Tamra @squirrelbrain definitely give it a try to see for yourself. There are some gems scattered in it, but I got halfway and didn‘t think the vibe was going to change much. 2mo

I wasn‘t quite prepared at first for the precocious adolescent narrator, and it took me a little while to really get into the story. Once I gave it a chance, I really enjoyed the slice-of-life picture of growing up in 1940s England. I especially appreciated seeing the class differences through Jessica‘s eyes. Beautifully written and vividly imagined. Many of the issues Jessica grapples with map well onto 2020s adolescence. 4⭐️

CSeydel Side note: something was bothering the edges of my brain for the longest time - what else have I read by Jane Gardam?? The name is so familiar and yet I couldn‘t find any other titles of hers that I‘d read. I finally realized I “know” her from a modern homage - a title in a series my kids absolutely devoured when they were young: 2mo
jlhammar Great review! I‘m going to have to treat myself to the Penderwicks series one of these days. I‘ve heard such good things! 2mo
CSeydel @jlhammar My kids absolutely loved them. It was a series we‘d always request immediately from the library when a new one came out! I think I only read the first one or two, but they were very enjoyable. 2mo

tpixie @CSeydel what a fun connection- Gardam ! 2mo
squirrelbrain Sounds like it‘s worth powering through a slightly annoying start…. 2mo
DieAReader 🥳Awesome!! 2mo
BarbaraBB I thought too that I had read more by her but hadn‘t! Glad you liked the book! 2mo
CSeydel @tpixie Right? I always enjoy discovering little literary “Easter eggs” like that. 2mo
CSeydel @squirrelbrain I was very annoyed by the beginning. I actually put it down for a couple of weeks because I just couldn‘t bear the “omg so quirky and precocious” tone. But once I got into the groove of the time period, the emphatic precociousness seemed to settle down a bit, and the adventures kept me interested. I won‘t give spoilers but there are some very powerful episodes in the later chapters. 2mo
CSeydel @BarbaraBB I wonder why she isn‘t more of a household name in the US - not sure about the UK/Europe, but here I think she‘s rather underrated. I‘m looking forward to reading more of her work! 2mo
Lesliereadsalot Glad you liked it! 2mo
Aimeesue I‘m glad you enjoyed it - Gardam is one of my favorite writers. Her humor is so dry that I think people often miss it. I love this one and Faith Fox and Crusoe‘s Daughter. Her short stories are brilliant too. 💙 2mo
CSeydel @Aimeesue Yes! I so enjoy that British understated humor. I‘ll add those to my TBR stack! 2mo

I thought that this was rather wonderful though I am partial to the precocious, “not quite normal” girls of literature. Love Gardam‘s wit and the dialogue felt warm and authentic. Also enjoyed all the details of navigating adolescence during the early years of WWII.

I didn‘t think you could go wrong with Europa Editions books, but this one proved me wrong. It‘s about child, semi-intellectual and weird, yet not interesting at all. Set in the UK during WWII but that didn‘t do much for the story either. In fact nothing much happens. I am sorry I can‘t be more encouraging. #EuropaCollective

Tamra I was hopeful after the first chapter, but sadly the interest is dwindling the further I get. 2mo

Mehso-so

The narrator is a 13 year old girl in England during World War II. Today she would probably be referred to as “on the spectrum” as she has a compulsion to tell the truth and her teachers think there‘s something off about her. She tells about small episodes in her life, in great detail and with a lot of dialogue. Only a couple hundred pages, but it never really spoke to me. I‘ll be interested in other reader‘s thoughts.

#EuropaCollective

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well, this was just blimmin delightful. Bright and charming and fierce and FUNNY.

It follows 13 year old Jessica Vye's misadventures at an English school during WWII but that description doesn't do justice to this sparkler of a book. Read if you love: I Capture the Castle, Cold Comfort Farm, Flavia de Luce etc.

As Jessica would say: I ADORED IT!
