All-American Murder
All-American Murder: The Rise and Fall of Aaron Hernandez, the Superstar Whose Life Ended on Murderers' Row | James Patterson, Alex Abramovich
Football coaches, players, and fans called Aaron Hernandez unstoppable. His four-year-old daughter called him Daddy. The law called him inmate #174594. He was a college All-American who became the youngest player in the NFL and later a Super Bowl veteran. He was a star tight end on the league-dominant New England Patriots, who extended his contract for a record $40 million. Aaron Hernandez's every move as a professional athlete played out in the headlines, yet he led a secret life-one that ended in a maximum security prison. What drove him to go so wrong, so fast? Son of a University of Connecticut football hero known as "the King" and brother to a Huskies quarterback, Hernandez was the best athlete Connecticut's Bristol Central High had ever produced. He chose to play football at the University of Florida, but by the time he arrived in Gainesville, he was already courting trouble. Between the summers of 2012 and 2013, not long after Hernandez made his first Pro Bowl, he was linked to a series of violent incidents culminating in the death of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who dated the sister of Hernandez's fiance, Shayanna Jenkins. All-American Murder is the first book to investigate-from the unique vantage point of the world's most popular thriller writer-Aaron Hernandez's first-degree murder conviction and the mystery of his own untimely and shocking death. Drawing on original and in-depth reporting, this is an explosive true story of a life cut short in the dark shadow of fame.

Extremely compelling true crime. This story has all the analysis, a bit of celeb scandal, some interesting discussion about the privilege associated with pro sport, weighed against some problematic health consequences, all of which are linked closely to the investigation into two crimes. Told in classic Patterson, bite size style, this is a propulsive read. I recommend it.

All-American Murder is a interesting and thought-provoking non-fiction account of the life of Aaron Hernandez. This story is not a typical James Patterson thriller. The writing was good but not quite as descriptive as his typical novels. The story is extremely sad and frustrating. The book made it difficult to feel any sympathy for Hernandez. https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/post/all-american-murder

My pick for #underrated is this book by Patterson. A lot of folks eye roll at the mention of his name, but I enjoy his non-fiction books a lot.

howjessicareads Interesting! As a bookstore employee I‘m definitely guilty of the Patterson eyeroll. 😬 5y

This case always fascinates me and makes me sad. It makes me wonder how much harm we‘re doing as a society by idolizing athletes when they‘re so young.

I am not a football fan, so much so that I had never even heard of Aaron Hernandez, but I loved this book! It was fast-paced, interesting, and made me think about the unique sadness of someone who has an incredible amount of potential and decides to waste it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes true crime, football, or just a good story.

This one is stunning. Nonfiction by James Patterson about the enigma that was Aaron Hernandez. You do not need to enjoy football to read this.

Good book. I don‘t usually read non fiction but I love Patterson and the subject matter was interesting to me. There were no great revelations but lots of information. I also liked the way the authors just told the story without adding their own opinions. Once in a while, they asked a question but never wanted you to feel sorry for condemn him!!! They left that up to the readers.

I wasn't sure if I would like this one or not, I had no idea who Aaron Hernandez even was & being from the UK, I have absolutely no knowledge on the NFL..

I actually found it to be a very interesting read, I could follow Aarons story and be given actual facts along the way.. Fantastic, as always Patterson..

Overall All-American Murder was a fascinating read and I flew through it within a day or so. Football is my favorite sport and I follow the NFL pretty regularly, however I was totally unaware of the tumultuous background of Aaron Hernandez. Patterson takes you through Hernandez‘s trouble-filled days from high school, all the way to the end of his unfortunate life and it truly is eye-opening.

Before reading this book I didn‘t know much about Aaron Hernandez. Based on things I had seen or heard, I thought he had a brain injury that caused him to commit the crimes he did. Even though he did have a brain injury, I believe Hernandez was mean, crazy at times, and felt he was a god. There was no excuse for what Hernandez did, plain and simple. After reading this book, I have a better understanding of his crimes.

Samplergal I‘ll be interested to read this. As a speech pathologist I have worked with brain injury. I also love true crime. AND football. Sad that his life ended so empty. 7y
NikkiKey94 @Samplergal It was a very interesting read. To be honest, I only read it because it is written by James Patterson. However, I‘m glad that I did because it wasn‘t a disappointment. 7y

I find it ironic that Aaron Hernandez was a fan of James Patterson‘s novels, especially considering that James Patterson and Alex Abromavich wrote about his life.

I was fascinated by this case as it played out live, primarily bc one of my best friends in college actually knew Hernandez from HS in CT and as a huge Patriots fan she was stoked when he got drafted. I'm not a fan of Patterson's fiction style but figured I'd give this a shot. Conclusion: I'm not a fan of Patterson's nonfiction style either, so dry. It was informative though, there were a lot of nuggets about his violent past that I'd never heard.

Notafraidofwords Any reference to the fact that football might‘ve played a role in his aggression? 7y
swishandflick @Notafraidofwords Vaguely. It mentions the autopsy and CTE in his brain but doesn't really go further than that. (edited) 7y

I love how James Patterson felt the need to point out that Aaron Hernandez was a fan of his books. A smidge self serving, no? 😂

vkois88 Wooooow. Someone thinks highly enough of himself for everyone... and honestly? I'm not a fan. To this day, I've never been able to finish one of his books. His writing just leaves so much to be desired. I know that's not a popular opinion, but it's my truth 😕 7y

A couple of my library holds came in! They're polar opposites and I'm excited for both ?? #libraryhaul

I'm proud of myself for continuing to stick to my book buying ban! (BOTM was the one exception I allowed myself so that wasn't a slip up). With library books coming in, it's just the "new" variety I need to infuse my already large TBR with fresh blood so to speak. I'm definitely not hurting for great books to read ??

EvieBee I love this library lingo you‘ve been using. You go, girl! This month begins my book buying ban. I can‘t afford to slip up. We travel next month so having to decide if I want to buy books or eat well on my trip. We can do it! 🤓🤗 7y

Oh, Thanksgiving Day football, how I miss you. Here in CO the season is already over, which is just wrong if you ask me. My EP Townies play the LaSalle Rams in the oldest continuing football rivalry in Rhode Island. But I digress. Jumping into this; so far it is compulsively readable and interesting.

First finish of the #24in48 !! Mind you, I was almost finished when I got up this morning. This book was insanely interesting and although I‘m not a Patriots fan by any stretch of the imagination, it was cool to see names that I knew. Totally passing this on to my football loving Uncle.

I'm intrigued by this new true crime about Aaron Hernandez! I'll never understand how someone who has absolutely everything going for them can make such horrible decisions and throw it all away, it'll be interesting to see a more complete reporting of this case.

Side note: I'm not a huge Patterson fiction fan, so I'm doubly intrigued to see if I enjoy his true crime style.

Kristy_K I didn‘t even know they were coming out with a book about this! I hope it does more than just rehash news articles. 7y
