White Rose, Black Forest
White Rose, Black Forest | Eoin Dempsey
In the shadows of World War II, trust becomes the greatest risk of all for two strangers.December 1943. In the years before the rise of Hitler, the Gerber family's summer cottage was filled with laughter. Now, as deep drifts of snow blanket the Black Forest, German dissenter Franka Gerber is alone and hopeless. Fervor and brutality have swept through her homeland, taking away both her father and her brother and leaving her with no reason to live. That is, until she discovers an unconscious airman lying in the snow wearing a Luftwaffe uniform, his parachute flapping in the wind. Unwilling to let him die, Franka takes him to her family's isolated cabin despite her hatred for the regime he represents. But when it turns out that he is not who he seems, Franka begins a race against time to unravel the mystery of the airman's true identity. Their tenuous bond becomes as inseparable as it is dangerous. Hunted by the Gestapo, can they trust each other enough to join forces on a mission that could change the face of the war and their own lives forever?

A girl, Franka who lost everything in life, find a new purpose as she finds an injured soldier amidst forest. With haunting past, untrustworthy present, & unpredictable future she struggles to rediscover her path. Crisp story with twist & turn makes it hard to put it down. A must read for WWII historical fiction lovers.

A young woman rescues a supposed Luftwaffe officer in the mountains. As their individual histories are revealed its apparent that their colliding paths couldn't be more serendipitous.
I couldn't put this down! I'm always a fan of WWII historical fiction. easy to read in terms of weight of subject matter as it focused mostly on the current plight of our protagonists as opposed to heavy, emotional WWII material. Nonetheless, well written!

Yep. Did the job! If you like WWll historical fiction. This is a straightforward story yet fast passed. Nice writing. And historically accurate.

Cathythoughts Hi Cuilin , we are ok , but there ifs a lot of fear around .... we are keeping the spirits up too. Strange times. The government are doing a mighty job & looking after us well. This invisible enemy is only starting ... so we don‘t know how bad this will get yet. My daughter is a nurse in CUH , so that‘s a big worry. She‘s living with her boyfriend, but we are in touch all the time. We are a resilient country , you know that ... so please god 5y
Cathythoughts Cont. ....Please god , we will come through this. A big concern is the north & south not having the same restrictions, a big worry. What part are of Ireland are you from ? Let me know how you are getting on. Stay safe. I‘ll look forward to hearing your news in this time. All the best , Cathy X 5y
Cuilin @Cathythoughts Hi Cathy I grew up in Cork. My family are still there. I‘d rather be there with Varadkar and Harris then here with Trump. Every state is doing their own thing. It‘s crazy. I‘m not one to pray a lot but I‘ll keep your daughter in my thoughts during this time. Take care and stay safe. 5y
Cathythoughts @Cuilin we are Corkonians too 👍🏻 keep well ... my husband did an online FB gig for de Barras in Clonakilty last Thursday night ... very emotional for us ... looks like that is the future of gigs god now ❤️👍🏻 (edited) 5y
Cuilin @Cathythoughts I looked him up on Facebook. 👍 Sure we‘re practically neighbors. I grew up in Carrigaline. Went to school in Douglas. 5y

Review || White Rose, Black Forest | Eoin Dempsey

White Rose, Black Forest was a tough one for me. The historical premise and backdrop was interesting, but as a thriller, it left a lot to be desired. It was a tense subject matter that deserved more action, mystery, and suspense.

This wasn't a bad book. But it wasn't great. It was very flat for lack of a better word. Just didn't work for me.

We went to a library book sale today. Everything was half price, which meant that most books were under $1. I, however, just had to pick out four of their higher priced books ($8), which meant we paid $4 a piece for those.

Louisiana‘s Way Home, White Rose Black Forest, The Sun Does Shine, and Two Girls Down were all wish list books. I‘ve already read Defending Jacob but it was a library copy so I was happy to take this one home to own for .50.

I love these photo challenges bc they always cause me to stumble upon fantastic sounding books that I‘ve never heard of! This one is a WWII story about a German dissenter who finds the body of an unconscious Nazi airman in the woods and takes him back to her cabin to care for him. Possibly based on a true story? Add it to the list!

The happenings in this book made me very nervous and anxious. (It would make a fabulous film.)

Franka‘s, the MC‘s, state of mind about the world is interesting and heartbreaking. What is the future worth when you lose people you love and you‘re ruled by a tyrant that seems unstoppable?

I enjoy World War II fiction and this book did not disappoint! It reads more like a thriller than historical fiction, with a fast pace and heart stopping suspense. I found that I was so nervous for the characters that I had to breathe deep and brace myself several times while reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Starting this one tonight. It was a Kindle First pick from earlier this year. Going to get one more book in before I start the 1,000 page book club book waiting for me. 😃📚 That 1,000 pager is going to make it tough to meet my goal for the number of books read for this year. 🤷‍♀️

It always amazes me how many stories are set during WWII, still I learn something new from each of them. This book is about a German woman, an ex-nurse, living in the wilderness of the Black Forest. She has lost her entire family through either illness or war and is wandering away from her cabin intending to commit suicide. Suddenly, she sees a half-frozen man unconscious on a snowy hillside. The drama begins there and grabs you to the end.
