4 Stars • Richard Abernethie dies, and his family gathers for the funeral. His sister Cora, known for her eccentricities, remarks that "someone must have helped him on with it," suggesting murder. Initially dismissed as a nonsensical comment, it later becomes the crux of the mystery. Cora herself is found murdered shortly after, making her comment seem prophetic. ⬇️

suvata Hercule Poirot, intrigued by the case, begins to investigate. He delves into the lives and alibis of the Abernethie family members, each with their own motives due to the inheritance. 4mo

This one is a fairly fun if a little bland Christie mystery. Poirot is back yet again, but he seems a little tired. I guess it's good he's staying busy and keeping his mind sharp, and growing marrows in the country wasn't his thing, but he tries to retire and people just keep bothering him. Maybe he could open a school to teach younger generations to solve mysteries and grow elaborate mustaches so they can fend for themselves eventually.

Recommended by Sophie Hannah as her favourite Christie and did not disappoint. A classic set-up with a dysfunctional family in a huge manor house returning from a funeral, another death & Poirot investigating. And a clever solution. As always I love the light touch, characters who are sketched so deftly you can see & hear them & the gentle poking fun at the wealthy family and their quirks. And clues that keep me guessing. A perfect mystery.

I needed a Christie palate cleanser after Murder at Mallowan Hall, so I turned to Christie herself. This is a lesser known novel with a much older Poirot who doesn‘t appear nearly as much as he should. However, I still enjoyed it. Any number of the characters could‘ve have plausibly been the murderer, but I never suspected the actual one even though they also made sense. Hugh Fraser is, as always, a delightful narrator.

I don‘t know why the German title has to give away the major clue that you know who did it right away. 🙈 But it is always a delight to follow Poirot coming to the same conclusion. 😊

The family dynamics in this one were especially fun. At the funeral of the patriarch, one of his nieces reveals that she thinks he was murdered. The next day, she is found killed by a supposed thief and everyone wonders at the coincidence...
I like that the lawyer did most of the sleuthing and called Poirot in later to put all the pieces together. Solid Christie twist at the end as usual.

When Richard Abernathie's will is read out, his sister Cora asks if he was really murdered. When Cora is found a couple of days later with her head bashed in the family's solicitor Mr Entwhistle cannot believe it was just coincidence. His investigations don't get very far and eventually he is forced to call in his friend Hercule Poirot.

I couldn't work out who it was, even though Poirot actually tells us well in advance of the big reveal.

Not much Poirot in this Poirot, but chugging along none-the-less.

rwmg I'm reading it as well. I have no idea who the murderer is or murderers are. Poirot has gathered all of the suspects back at the house but I'm only 2/3 of the way through so I assume there are a lot of surprises still to come. 1y

Another book finished while on vacation. Interesting Poirot mystery. The characters aren‘t all likeable, which made it seem it could be anyone. A family drama with an inheritance involved. #teamslaughter #scarathlon @Clwojick 16pts

Wives madly devoted to unsatisfactory and often what appeared quite unprepossessing husbands, wives contemptuous of, and bored by, apparently attractive and impeccable husbands. What any woman saw in some particular man was beyond the comprehension of the average intelligent male. It just was so. A woman who could be intelligent about everything else in the world could be a complete fool when it came to some particular man.

Such a great mystery. I love that she gives us a cast of suspicious characters who all have motive and opportunity. It kept me guessing until the very end! If you‘re looking for a good old fashioned whodunnit, then look no further!

Listened to this one digitally on audio, great narration as always by Hugh Fraser. Poirot is sent to investigate when a wealthy man dies from an illness and his relative meets a bloody end with an axe after making a comment that he was murdered... Lots of twists and turns.

DS9 4.05 #Indiscretion In which we learn that Dukat is not only a genocidal creep, but a philandering creep too. We meet Tora Ziyal, his half-Bajoran daughter (and how does that work biologically?) in her 1st of 3 incarnations. Funny how in English-language fiction “indiscretion“ is almost always a euphemism for ill-advised sex, however discreetly had, when it really should only mean not minding one's business (see tagged). #startreksummerjune

tournevis The episode also features one of DS9's purest slapstick scenes, pictured here, with Dukat's butt being the literal butt of the joke. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder how “indiscretion” came to be a euphemism for a sexual affair. 🤔 5y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly I wish I knew. It's come over to French in the last two decades too (I blame dubbed US tv) but it makes very little sense. The whole point of an affair is it's gonna be discreet. 5y

I really enjoyed this reread of three of Dame Christies stories. This anthology was Death On The Nile, Towards Zero & After The Funeral. If you enjoy crime novels & you haven't read her, what are you waiting for?! Even Hamburglar, Monsieur Milkshake & Petunia Pear loved them. #cozycrimequeen #cushioncollectionsrule #christiescrimeclub

Marchpane Is Monsieur Milkshake Belgian by any chance? He bears a striking resemblance to a certain detective... 8y

So good!!! I used to watch Poirot movies all the time with my mom growing up, but I never read any of the books. But this one has ignited in me a desire to read all of them! I had my suspicions of the outcome but couldn't find a way to explain how it happened, so I had moved on to other ideas. But of course, Poirot figured it all out, and Christie wrote a perfect wrap-up for her fantastic puzzle! And the audiobook narration was great!

DiruVamp One of my favorite childhood memories is watching Poirot and Miss Marple with my mom! She had the entire collection of those black leather bound Agatha Christie books - I believe it was a book of a month thing because I vaguely remember her getting a new one in mail periodically I would love to just look at them on the shelf! 8y
readinginthedark @DiruVamp My mom had the books, too, but they were tucked away somewhere. I could only reach/see the children's books for a long time, because my parents have an old house and hidden bookcases. 😋 8y
