I've had way too many library holds come in lately! Add to this three audio books and an ebook in my library app. I need an intervention! 😱 Especially since I keep ignoring these in favour of my Kindle. I should ban myself from charging the Kindle or using the Kindle app until I've read a few of these. 😣😬

I knew e-material was expensive for libraries but these numbers 🤯🤯🤯 Kudos to all the librarians juggling budgets to make sure we readers get our ebook and audiobook fix!

I see nothing wrong with loading up with library books, even when I have a TBR stack taller than myself. New Turtledove alternate history book was worth the trip alone!!

Glad to see push back on this idea. I use all types of methods for my book hoarding, but libraries are where I learned to ❤️ reading. Open access to knowledge is a foundation of society.

The OP argued we spend too much money in US on taxes for libraries. Of all the things that‘s what he wants to cut? The outrage to this article gives me hope for humanity

I've been in a funk all night because of something that happened at work. For 2 YEARS I have. Wen trying to convince the powers that be, that our library should own every book on the Illinois Reads and Read for a Lifetime lists. We are a government library and part of our job is to support the programs of various departments of the state. We these are programs of the state. They are programs of OUR LIBRARY. The 4th floor puts these lists 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan Together every year and tells everyone in Illinois you should read them. Well I finally got approval to buy all this years books, all last years books, and any other titles from previous years I think we need. YEAH. 😁. I asked the gal who runs Read for a Lifetime if the 2018 list was ready yet. It's normally announced in April but being in house I sometimes get a sneak peak. Well totally NOT what happened. 👇🏻 6y

LibrarianRyan She told me NOT to buy the books because there were 25 titles that would never be used again. This just totally DiSheartened me. I can't decide if I'm more disheartens that she thinks as a gov lib we shouldn't have these books, or if she doesn't believe in her own program. The list is for high schoolers and parents. They are encouraged to read titles from the list to show that reading never gets old. Classics can mix with modern etc. 👇🏻 6y

LibrarianRyan Seriously, she's been doing this program over 10 years (probably longer). I've been pushing this program in my public library before my move, and now in my gov lib job. I think it's an excellent program that needs talked up more. But apparently I'm the only one. 😔 6y

LibrarianRyan @julesG 👍🏻🤓 I'm buying the books anyway. We are having problems spending our budget so I have $5000 to spend but it has to fall into parameters. The funny thing is the gal who runs Illinois Reads is beyond thrilled. And also think both lists should be in our collection. 6y

Kaye Do you think it‘s time for a change in jobs ? It sounds like you love books and are enthused with reading , so not changing to being a Sumo Wrestler, but finding a different library system that allows you to expand a bit more. It sounds as if you are being stifled in your current situation, if it‘s been 2 years and this still bothers you. There may be a better fit out there someplace. 👍 6y

LibrarianRyan @Kaye maybe. It's more stiffiling than I would like, but one of the reasons I was hired was to do what I'm good at. Getting people interested and in the door. As a gov library they are just now going through a relevancy problem that public libs experienced 20 years ago. But with everyone (including me) covering multiple jobs.... they need someone like me for the fight. Someone who remembers and loves books. Not just another gov data entry hound 6y

Kaye Sounds like you are definitely in it for the right reasons. Getting people enthused with reading certainly includes being able to have interesting material available to keep them enthused. Keeping fingers crossed that things improve for you in some ways over time. 6y

Betty Seems that other person (not you) is burned out. Keep on fighting and adding books. Do you add e-books for Overdrive/Libby in your library? 6y

LibrarianRyan @Betty no. As a gov library we do not use that plat form. We have Ebsco host ebook plat form, a proquest platform that we are required at minimum to buy 2 books for a year ( think $300-$1000 per book). And we participate in eReadIllinois on the Axis 360 platform, but we are not allowed to buy books for the platform. It comes out of a different portion of the budget and there is no money for additions. And since we are a government depart👇🏻 6y

LibrarianRyan Ment it takes an act of congress to move money around. Illinois went without a budget for 2+ years and the library portion of the budget was 3 years old. We are trying to talk the boss into rearranging where we can spend money. I know it's hard to believe, but we are having a problem spending our book budget. It's why I get to buy these books in the first place. 6y

Betty Aye, I understand. I used to teach in a federally-sponsored school. In the month of June or Sept we'd rush about trying to find things to order before the end of the fiscal year. If not ordered, that money disappeared not to return the following year. 6y
