Monsoon Summer
Monsoon Summer | Julia Gregson
By the award-winning author of East of the Sun, a moving love story spanning the globe from England to India, about the forbidden love between a young Indian doctor and an English midwife. Oxfordshire, 1947. Kit Smallwood, hiding a painful secret and exhausted from nursing soldiers during the Second World War, escapes to Wickam Farm where her friend is setting up a charity that will send European midwives to the Moonstone Home in South India. At Wickam Farm, Kit meets Tomas Thekkeden, an Indian doctor finishing his PhD at Oxford University. They quickly fall in love with each other to the chagrin of their parents. But Kit and Thomas are excited for the future and hungry for adventure. Against their parents wishes, they secretly marry and move to India where Kit plans to run the Moonstone Home. But far from being a romantic adventure, Kits life in India isnt what she imagined. Her relationship with Tomas and his large, traditional family begins to unravel, her job is fraught with tension, and she is faced with a newly independent Indiawhich now resents England for withdrawing so quicklywhere riots have left millions dead. Kit tries to form close relationships with her colleagues, but soon learns her limits when her naivet lands her in a frightening and dangerous situation. Based on true accounts of European midwives in India, Monsoon Summer is a powerful story of secrets, the nature of home, the comforts and frustrations of family, and how far well go to be with those we love.

An insightful read and extremely vividly told. The descriptions of India and its customs are depicted evocatively and realistically. It highlights the prejudices and attitudes towards women, plus the many traditions in such a culture. The subject of midwifery is touched upon quite significantly and is interestingly illustrated. There are some complex characters who add to the richness of the story. An engaging and absorbing tale.

I'm doing the #20booksofsummer plus my book club book and Saints for all Occasions with The Washington Post. 22 books for June 1-September 3. Phew...😂😂😂😂

DivineDiana I love this idea! If I take a break from @hpchapteraday, I still have 3 Book Clubs x3 months. So 20-9 = 11. It would at least be a start for Mount TBR! 😉😬 7y

I wasn't sure about this at first because there can be quite a lot of "plucky English girls going against the grain" type books and they can be pretty generic with nearly interchangeable protagonists. This was wholly different! Telling the story from multiple view points really added depth. I was a little disappointed that a few ends were left untied and that felt sloppy rather than deliberate, but enjoyed it anyway!

Monsoon Summer is a character driven story with well developed and sympathetic characters.
Gregson has written an intelligent and emotional story that is both heart breaking and uplifting. This is a story about love, family, culture, class, forgiveness and acceptance. About fighting for what you believe in but most of all fighting for those you love.
Recommended for all readers of Historical Fiction.

Thunder continues to roll around. This book is just okay though. I might switch it out to something else - a lovely rainy afternoon with thunder and lightning - perfect time to settle into a good book shouldn't be wasted on something that is just "okay". ?

Lindy Beautiful view. Hope you find the right book for your mood. 8y

Went to the annual family reunion beach day yesterday. Brought the Kobo along to read on the car ride up and back, and was the only time reading yesterday. It was a stunning day on Lake Huron! Ride home also included listening to the Tragically Hip's final concert on CBC Radio and then catching final song on TV.

Great mail day today. A book that moves from England to India (love both settings so much) and my very first pair of LuLaRoe leggings. They feel like butter, and they remind me of my teen years, and they coordinate with my Read Harder, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Detroit City t-shirts. I am in love!

Set in post-Independence India, the tension between whites and Indians is the compelling backdrop for a romance between a white woman and an Indian man, navigating a traditional world struggling to accept social change. A fine love story. Thanks for the arc, @TouchstoneBooks!
