Someone Else's Love Story
Someone Else's Love Story: A Novel | Joshilyn Jackson
34 posts | 56 read | 23 to read
Someone Else's Love Story is beloved and highly acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Joshilyn Jackson's funny, charming, and poignant novel about science and miracles, secrets and truths, faith and forgiveness; about falling in love, and learning that things aren't always what they seemor what we hope they will be. Shandi Pierce is juggling finishing college, raising her delightful three-year-old genius son Nathan, aka Natty Bumppo, and keeping the peace between her eternally warring, long-divorced parents. She's got enough complications without getting caught in the middle of a stick-up and falling in love with William Ashe, who willingly steps between the robber and her son. Shandi doesn't know that her blond god Thor has his own complications. When he looked down the barrel of that gun he believed it was destiny: It's been one year to the day since a tragic act of physics shattered his world. But William doesn't define destiny the way others do. A brilliant geneticist who believes in facts and numbers, destiny to him is about choice. Now, he and Shandi are about to meet their so-called destinies head on, making choices that will reveal unexpected truths about love, life, and the world they think they know.

Book 133

I listened to Someone Else's Love Story by Joshilyn Jackson, a book about a young mother who is held hostage during a gas station robbery. This experience motivates her to accept her past and unravel her feelings. It was an engaging, easy listen. 3.5 stars

This was really good! I can understand why it gets some mixed reviews because there are a myriad of human emotions all intertwined in this book. Complex, but at the same time simple. Just like life. A variety of interesting characters, and strong (but sometimes tough) subject matter made this one hard to put down.

I finished this in 2 days. It would of been 1 if not for social obligations this weekend. My heart really ached for Shandi and William and all their intersecting family and friends. I like the way the author unraveled the story with flashbacks inside of present day moments. The ending was satisfying and I loved how she portrayed the three year old son. It made me nostalgic for when my son was little.

What I liked:
Natty was so adorable and funny
The writing style and humor
The family dynamic was very well written and true to life
While not a traditional romance story, there was some different romance elements and the love of a family/mother/parents.

What I didn‘t like—spoilers in the comments.

Overall, a melancholy, emotional, mixed read for me--but I did like the author‘s writing style and may check out another one of her books.

SLibrarian5 What I didn‘t like—Shandi‘s sudden feelings for Walcott. The end of Bridget and William‘s storyline. And the rape/sexual assault storyline. 5y

There were parts of the book that I liked but I found myself frustrated with the main character. This is the 2nd Joshilyn Jackson book I have read. It wasn‘t nearly as good as Almost Sister but It was pleasant enough.

I‘ve got a ton of Joshilyn Jackson books sitting neglected on my shelves. I‘m finally reading one, and I love it. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a book that made me laugh out loud!

Ang203l The book I picked today just keeps making me cry.... 😂 6y
LeafingThroughLife @Ang203l That‘s more my usual MO. 😆What‘s the tearjerker? 6y
Ang203l @LeafingThroughLife the one I quoted from, Tattoos on the Heart. Nonfiction about a priests ministry to LA gangs. Tough stuff. 6y

It's a good story, filled with hope, hopelessness, faith and faithlessness. It has a few twists and surprises that had my attention until the end.

Book 94. Good book, I've ordered more of her books because I've liked the everything I've read so far. I had some qualms that I'm going to address in a spoiler comment below. 👇👇

ContraryMary I didn't love love the main character but I didn't hate her, I understood her feeling an immediate connection to William due to the circumstances but didn't like that she labeled it love and tried to get into that role. I also didn't care for the fact that the wife wasn't actually dead and they ended up back together though I can't explain why. And I have conflicted feelings with the way things were tied up with the sperm donor but I think 👇 6y
ContraryMary That's to be expected, and most people did and we were kind of lead to that place were we wanted him punished but she humanized him and made it hard. 6y

There's a lot going on in this novel, but somehow it all works. The characters each have their own quirks and provide the basis for several intertwined love stories. I guess in the end this is a story about love, and how it is different for everyone.

Just started this last night, and I'm not yet sure. It's hard for me to follow the writing; I can't keep track of the characters or the plot just yet. Will keep trying for a few more pages.

Even though it only has a 64% Pick on Litsy the readers that liked it REALLY liked it. I'm giving it a try.

Checked this out from the library through the Overdrive app on my phone and had it downloaded to my Kindle. Gotta love technology.

Reviewsbylola I've been pleasantly surprised by some books on here with low ratings. You just never know! This one had 0% when I read it and it became one of my favorites of 2016. 7y

Library find! Not really a romance novel reader but I picked this out and I loved it. Nuns, at gunpoint, good characters, Aspergers, Atlanta, southern charm, and a love triangle that's actually a square!! Had me until the end, I'm going to read her other books. Love a find like this.

Finally read my first Joshilyn Jackson book after hearing so many good things from Anne Bogel in the What Should I Read Next podcast. It was a great summer read. Sweet and heart-breaking in turns with a perfect ending. Just started the short novella My Own Miraculous last night which is about the same characters as SELS. Also listening to Opposite of Everyone on audio; the main character is a side character from SELS. Looking forward to more JJ!

Lynnsoprano I've had this on my Kindle for over a year but haven't gotten to it. Sounds like I should move it up the TBR. 7y

Currently reading two Joshilyn Jackson books ... This one on my Kindle and The Opposite of Everyone on audio (read by the author). I am enjoying the tagged book more so far but haven't had much time to really get into the audio book yet. Has anyone here read Joshilyn Jackson? What are your favorites by her? I am hearing great things about her new one coming out this month and look forward to reading it.

Reecaspieces I love all her books. I think my favorite is Gods in Alabama. But it really is hard to choose. 7y
christineandbooks @Reecaspieces I think I hear about that one often as people's favorite. I'm definitely adding it to my TBR list. Thanks! 7y

So-so for me. This was my first time listening to an audiobook read by the author. I liked that. I enjoyed Shandi's chapters much more than William's. I really hated the Paula character. I did feel like Jackson played a trick on the reader. Not thrilled with that. And there were several times when I didn't like Shandi. Overall, I thought it was a lot longer than it needed to be.

I really liked this book. Such a great story line. I loved the alternating perspectives and character stories and I really loved the characters. I loved the way it came together and didn't entirely expect the ending. Definitely read this one!
