Park Avenue Summer | Renée Rosen
41 posts | 25 read | 63 to read
Mad Men meets The Devil Wears Prada as Renée Rosen draws readers into the glamorous New York City of 1965 and Cosmopolitan magazine, where a brazen new editor-in-chief--Helen Gurley Brown--shocks America and saves a dying publication by daring to talk to women about all things off-limits... New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss, who leaves her small midwestern town to chase her big-city dreams and unexpectedly lands the job of a lifetime working for the first female editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown. Nothing could have prepared Alice for the world she enters as editors and writers resign on the spot, refusing to work for the woman who wrote the scandalous bestseller Sex and the Single Girl, and confidential memos, article ideas, and cover designs keep finding their way into the wrong hands. When someone tries to pull Alice into a scheme to sabotage her boss, she is more determined than ever to help Helen succeed. While pressure mounts at the magazine and Alice struggles to make her way in New York, she quickly learns that in Helen Gurley Brown's world, a woman can demand to have it all.

PARK AVENUE SUMMER by Renee Rosen is sophisticated, stunning, and absolutely magnificent. It's a gripping story of 1965 New York City and the magazine world of Cosmopolitan and it's new female editor-in-chief Helen Gurley Brown. Rosen vivid storytelling explores the joy and limitations of the role of women, with glamorous setting that blends fact and fiction into an unputdownable story.

Received one of my #lmpbc books back and enjoyed reading your comments. I seem to have a knack for picking “just ok†stories for these groups lol. Except in my last romance group- that book was 🔥.

JenReadsAlot I enjoyed that book! 3y
BethM @JenReadsAlot I liked it but I read What the lady wants by her which was far better. This one was engaging enough but I thought some the characters were a bit flat. 3y
JenReadsAlot I'll check that one out then. 3y
BethM @JenReadsAlot the audio is good! Plus it‘s about the heiress to the True value stores which my aunt runs so i was intrigued by that and the close proximity to Chicago. 3y

Perfect blend of Devil Wears Prada + Sex and the City + Mad Men. I devoured this book from start to finish and seriously didn‘t want it to end! I found myself stopping often to google vintage Cosmopolitan magazine covers/issues and to learn more about the bold and glamorous Helen Gurley Brown. Highly recommend!

This fast, fun, and easy read about Helen Gurley Brown is just what the doctor ordered to take my mind off the pandemic. Rosen does a spectacular job of weaving history and fiction together as a small-town, aspiring photographer takes us to 1965 New York, showing us how Helen turns Cosmo magazine into the sexy icon we know today. It's Sex and the City meets The Devil Wears Prada.

I was reluctant to read this one because I feared it was just a redux of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (a book that I did not like). To be fair, there are a lot of superficial similarities--a young woman looking to launch her career gets a job to an assistant to an infamous editor. But that is wear the similarities end. This book is about strong women forging their own way in the world and, even better, it is about how women support each other.

This is the first book I've read from this author and I can't believe I've been missing out all this time! The writing was so good that I had a very hard time believing I was reading a piece of fiction and not a memoir. Any fan of Historic Fiction or The Devil Wears Prada will love this one.

PARK AVENUE SUMMER is simply delightful. The characters, the setting and the story all work together to transport us to New York City in 1965 and the start of an iconic magazine as we know it today. Alice‘s character is spot on for a young twenty something in the Big Apple trying to live the life her mother had had to give up. Alice was scared but also brave https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/post/park-avenue-summer

Is about Helen Gurley Brown‘s dedication, struggles and outside the box (cringe-worthy to some) thinking as the new Editor-in-Chief of the famed Cosmopolitan magazine. In 1965 women didn‘t have many places to advance high-up in the working world. Enter small town girl Alice Weiss, hired as secretary to HGB + being pulled by others to sabotage her new boss. A fascinating story that gave me great insight into the challenges facing women back then.

For a book that was based on the life of a interesting woman this book fell flat - the characters lacked depth & the ending was cliche.
The constant comments about Alice‘s Ohio naïveté really started to grate and it‘s poor/lack of handling of women‘s rights was irritating. I understand that the book is placed in the 60s and feminism has changed a lot but I think there is a missed opportunity to really dig into the complexities and changes.

Rosen's writing was whip-smart and elegant. Alice was the perfect vehicle, not only was she the target audience of the magazine, but she perfectly balances out Helen's impulsive and flighty whims. Both women have aspirations—Alice wants to be a photographer and Helen wants to make her mark in a male-dominated industry—and Rosen shows how it is possible for women to support one another without sacrificing themselves. Pour a cosmopolitan and enjoy!

For fans of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, Renée Rosen takes us into the office of Cosmopolitan Magazine‘s Editor-in-Chief Helen Gurley Brown in 1960s New York City. As a young woman in my 20s I devoured Cosmopolitan, eager to read its advice about beauty and fashion. PARK AVENUE SUMMER gave me a look inside the workings of the magazine. It also revealed some surprising aspects of Helen Gurley Brown‘s life that I was totally unaware of.
