PARK AVENUE SUMMER by Renee Rosen is sophisticated, stunning, and absolutely magnificent. It's a gripping story of 1965 New York City and the magazine world of Cosmopolitan and it's new female editor-in-chief Helen Gurley Brown. Rosen vivid storytelling explores the joy and limitations of the role of women, with glamorous setting that blends fact and fiction into an unputdownable story.
The best laid plans were thrown off by whim and library holds! Used a lot of FREE spaces this month. I did read my #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin. Came so close to a bingo. #BookSpinBingo
I love it when I start a book on the first of the month and it turns out to be my #BookSpin! #BookSpinBingo
Received one of my #lmpbc books back and enjoyed reading your comments. I seem to have a knack for picking “just ok†stories for these groups lol. Except in my last romance group- that book was 🔥.
While the main character was a little dull I was super interested in the parts about Cosmopolitan magazine. #LMPBC
Back to work this week in office. I have really really missed reading on the train.
Been Mia bc oooh lord I‘ve been moody lately. Like break out the Hp and hocus pocus T-shirts so I don‘t cut a bi*** moody 😂 idk if it‘s the anxiety or the post partum hormones or just life but thank god for books lately! some reviews coming but they‘re on my work phone. Reading a bit before bed while everyone else sleeps!
Some rare time to myself. I just added a few of hers to my TBR too :)
Hoping to get a little reading time in before the kiddo get hungry and the hubs gets home. @SamHeartCoffee these biscuits are THE BOMB! Where do you get them?
Perfect blend of Devil Wears Prada + Sex and the City + Mad Men. I devoured this book from start to finish and seriously didn‘t want it to end! I found myself stopping often to google vintage Cosmopolitan magazine covers/issues and to learn more about the bold and glamorous Helen Gurley Brown. Highly recommend!
“Every girl out there needs to know she‘s not aloneâ€
Interesting story on Cosmopolitan magazine when Helen Gurley Brown first took the helm.

In 1965, twenty-something Alice has just moved to New York City and landed a job with Helen Gurley Brown, the woman who would become famed editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan. Such a fun read!
This fast, fun, and easy read about Helen Gurley Brown is just what the doctor ordered to take my mind off the pandemic. Rosen does a spectacular job of weaving history and fiction together as a small-town, aspiring photographer takes us to 1965 New York, showing us how Helen turns Cosmo magazine into the sexy icon we know today. It's Sex and the City meets The Devil Wears Prada.
Lately I have become enchanted with audio books. This one is great bc it's sweet and makes me feel like I'm back in NYC wandering the Flower District.
I was reluctant to read this one because I feared it was just a redux of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (a book that I did not like). To be fair, there are a lot of superficial similarities--a young woman looking to launch her career gets a job to an assistant to an infamous editor. But that is wear the similarities end. This book is about strong women forging their own way in the world and, even better, it is about how women support each other.

This is the first book I've read from this author and I can't believe I've been missing out all this time! The writing was so good that I had a very hard time believing I was reading a piece of fiction and not a memoir. Any fan of Historic Fiction or The Devil Wears Prada will love this one.
I was pretty disappointed when I wasn't chosen to receive the ARC of this on Netgalley, but it made this Goodreads win that much sweeter!
Park Avenue Summer was such a surprising read. This is a historical fiction story of Alice Weiss who becomes the assistant of the fames Helen Gurley Brown who just took over as Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine.

PARK AVENUE SUMMER is simply delightful. The characters, the setting and the story all work together to transport us to New York City in 1965 and the start of an iconic magazine as we know it today. Alice‘s character is spot on for a young twenty something in the Big Apple trying to live the life her mother had had to give up. Alice was scared but also brave https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/post/park-avenue-summer
I am kind of on a theme right. Ow. I don‘t usually pick my books out early but I am totally feeling my next several books.
Woohoo! I'm excited! It's been ages since I won a book from Goodreads and this one looks soo good!
4th of July Weekend read! This book was smart, sassy, simple and easy to read cover to cover! It reminded me of Sex in the City, The Carrie Diaries and Devil Wears Prada rolled into one and what‘s not to love about that! Recommend for fun summer read! 4 stars!
Is about Helen Gurley Brown‘s dedication, struggles and outside the box (cringe-worthy to some) thinking as the new Editor-in-Chief of the famed Cosmopolitan magazine. In 1965 women didn‘t have many places to advance high-up in the working world. Enter small town girl Alice Weiss, hired as secretary to HGB + being pulled by others to sabotage her new boss. A fascinating story that gave me great insight into the challenges facing women back then.
@EmilyM Thank you soooooo much for the birthday gifts! They arrived today safe and sound. I love the cocktail beach towel and margarita towel clips! They‘ll come in handy this summer! And I love the books, both of which are #blameitonlitsy picks! Not pictured is the Nancy from Stranger Things Funko POP, as I‘d already put her on my ST shelf! You are an awesome #penpal! 😃
For a book that was based on the life of a interesting woman this book fell flat - the characters lacked depth & the ending was cliche.
The constant comments about Alice‘s Ohio naïveté really started to grate and it‘s poor/lack of handling of women‘s rights was irritating. I understand that the book is placed in the 60s and feminism has changed a lot but I think there is a missed opportunity to really dig into the complexities and changes.
I think The Devil Wears Prada series is a hoot And you can‘t help but think of it while reading this book. I enjoy stories set in the 60s, set in NYC. I love historical fiction... There were so many checks for me in this book and it did not disappoint.

Living in New York City had always been a dream of Alice‘s mother, and Alice decided that is where she wanted to be so she could fulfill her mother‘s dream.
When Alice arrives, she finds a job working with Helen Gurley Brown, the editor of COSMOPOLITAN, a pretty scandalous magazine for the 1960‘s.
Rosen's writing was whip-smart and elegant. Alice was the perfect vehicle, not only was she the target audience of the magazine, but she perfectly balances out Helen's impulsive and flighty whims. Both women have aspirations—Alice wants to be a photographer and Helen wants to make her mark in a male-dominated industry—and Rosen shows how it is possible for women to support one another without sacrificing themselves. Pour a cosmopolitan and enjoy!
For fans of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, Renée Rosen takes us into the office of Cosmopolitan Magazine‘s Editor-in-Chief Helen Gurley Brown in 1960s New York City. As a young woman in my 20s I devoured Cosmopolitan, eager to read its advice about beauty and fashion. PARK AVENUE SUMMER gave me a look inside the workings of the magazine. It also revealed some surprising aspects of Helen Gurley Brown‘s life that I was totally unaware of.
