Andrew65 @Pageturner1 On Fantastic Fiction she is categorised as general fiction and mystery, but I would say they are more telling the life of people in Ireland, with some romance and a small element of mystery. I hate the term but would most probably be termed as Women‘s Fiction, but I am not a woman and I loved the storyteller. She is such a great and easy storyteller. (edited) 4y

I love Maeve Binchy's novels and this one did not disappoint. It has a great plot and great development of characters. It is a very easy read and should not be missed if you are a Binchy fan. I'm looking forward to reading another of her novels very soon.

ljuliel Sadly, I think lots of people stay in cruddy marriages with partners that aren‘t suitable. Sometimes you see a really nice lady with a mean old man for a husband. The marriage INSTITUTION can be a bit like quicksand. The longer you stay, the further you sink. People might throw you a rope but you don‘t grab it. 4y

ljuliel I thought that at the very beginning of the book. Typical romance. They dislike each other at first, but then they want to hook up by the end. Yuk. ( I don‘t like romance stories) 4y

ljuliel I can understand why she felt like she owed him , but sometimes, you can do everything in your power for someone and they just take advantage of you and don‘t appreciate it. I really disliked this part of the story. It made me sad. 4y

Andrew65 @ljuliel Very sad. You bring up your children in the best way, to know right from wrong, and to become independent and make their own decisions. They then have to take responsibility for themselves and their own decisions. Vonnie needs to stop beating herself up and release herself from this guilt. He is a grown man! 4y

ljuliel That whole situation was just sad. One of the saddest parts of the book. She felt like she owed him everything she could possibly give him. He really didn‘t care anything about her , he used her for the bail money, then went on his way without a word. Sad... 4y

TheBookHippie I had to laugh at this question - my parents do that here- it‘s so funny the grand and great grand kids are “ohhhh it‘s 4 o clock Gramma is out eating now with Grandpa” 🤣🤣🤣 but much thoughts I like how this read I‘m constantly changing my opinions of people. ljuliel She reacted differently than I would have. I would have looked at the health risks , rather than sitting back and allowing him to make a choice that unsafe for himself. 4y

EadieB I do think Nora should be persuading Aidan to take it easy since he already had a heart attack. 4y

Thanks to @Andrew65 for these #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead I love reading her books again. Fun fact this was a #BOTM pick in 2009. I missed reading this at the time of publication (I almost died in 2007 and 2011 and was very sick through 2012) I am enjoying this read very much. It‘s very soothing in the storytelling way.
So thank you Andrew I would have not thought to pick her up again. #blameitonlitsy in the best way. ❤️

TheBookHippie @marleed I‘ve made huge life changes and I have to live differently. ALLL worth it. I just went through all my doctor appointments and I‘m doing very well. ❤️ It‘s been wonderful not having to be in hospitals these past 7 years. 4y

ljuliel Yes. I think she needed a fresh start in a new place to move ahead in life. It seems the right move for her. If she would have stayed, she may have fallen for the stupid boyfriend‘s line again and ended up pregnant and alone. Plus, if she would‘ve stayed with her mother, she may have ended up staying with her for many years to come , and felt it was her duty, then she wouldn‘t have had the chances she does ,being on her own in a new place. 4y

EadieB I believe Ania was right to leave Poland for the same reasons that Julie mentions. I don't think she will go back to Poland as that would be a step back in the wrong direction for her. Working at the heart center and learning English will be a good thing for her to do. 4y

TheBookHippie I think she was right. I think she‘s on the right path. 4y

ljuliel Was this supposed to be Ania ? I don‘t remember an Anita. As far as Ania , it happens every day. A young girl gets sweet talked by a slick guy and she falls for him, and usually does stupid things until she realizes what he‘s truly like. 4y

EadieB Ania needs to get as far away from Marek as she can as he is definitely not the person for her or any girl who wants a good relationship. Marek has now lost everything and wants to get his relationship back with Ania but he now realizes that it's too late because he was such a jerk. 4y

ljuliel I‘m not sure on this one. If you mean how she was before the girlfriend was going to come visit to after she found out ? I‘d say she felt like most parents would whose adult son was bringing home a girlfriend to meet them. You‘d be nervous and want to make sure everything looked good, etc. If you mean post- accident , maybe she realized how close she came to losing him and she realized she needed to appreciate him more. 4y

EadieB I think after Declan's accident she realized that she needs to relax more about his girlfriend and life in general and just learn to appreciate him more. 4y

ljuliel I think most people would. I understand why she wanted to try to manage things at home , and she didn‘t want to believe things had advanced to the level they had. It‘s hard for some people to put their parent into a nursing home , but it‘s usually for the best in these situations to ensure their safety. 4y

EadieB I don't think she should feel guilty about her mom's death but I can see why she feels it's her fault because she didn't put her in the nursing home. Her mother was getting hard to handle and needed someone with her 24/7 so an accident was bound to happen. 4y

TheBookHippie I think this is part of the helpless feeling too. It‘s such a tricky situation I think her heart was in the right place her mind wouldn‘t let her heart not win. Guilt is indivisible with death a lot of the time . But I don‘t think she should be feeling that. 4y

rubyslippersreads I understand why she feels guilty, but it might be a blessing in disguise for her mother, who didn‘t want to go to a nursing home. 4y

TheBookHippie It‘s tricky. I know my friend put her mom in a home and she needed to be there but she died with in a week. No medical reason . She says the guilt still gets her. I‘ve seen that happen as a nurse as well. I think we just try to do the right thing yes she should be in a home, but it may not end any differently. 4y

ljuliel I like this one much better than the last. Much easier to keep track of the characters the way it‘s written. Mostly likeable characters, with a couple of bad guys you hope will get their comeuppance. 4y

TheBookHippie I so love this book. Brings me back to training new nurses and fighting for better lives for my residents. Hard to believe I left nursing 13 years ago already. I missed reading Mauve. Glad to be back . 4y

ljuliel They‘re puzzling too , as Declan seems like he gets along with them, but is also frustrated with them at times. I think they really care about him , but maybe he feels he‘s not getting the proper backup support ? I don‘t think they realize they‘re doing anything wrong. They‘re just ordinary folks so I don‘t think they mean any harm. 4y

EadieB I think his mom is a little crazy about fixing up the kitchen etc before Fiona can come to dinner. 4y

ljuliel He sounds like a sweetheart. I don‘t know any real life doctors that‘d be quite as willing to spend the time with patients and the behind the scenes setting things up, but maybe life in other countries is different. He seems a good guy and a Fiona seems like a really sweet girl. 4y

ljuliel That one was a bit of a puzzlement for me. In the beginning, I was wondering if she still had feelings for him and was holding onto him by not granting a divorce. I myself wouldn‘t put up with his cheating shenanigans. He‘d gladly have the divorce from me. Why she‘d want him back when he cheated on her and now has this new young girl situation. It‘s hard to read Clara. She comes across as mostly business. 4y

ljuliel I think you‘d almost have to live in the area to know what‘s best for your hospital. I know small hospitals ( here) are closing down and being bought out by bigger ones, which leave large gaps of areas that have to drive long distances to get health care. As long as the money would go to the hospital in some form, it‘d be good. (edited) 4y

TheBookHippie I‘ve seen this done well where some is sold to non profits or fair trades and housing is also included. Funnelling money locally is always a good answer. Especially in this case for healthcare that‘s decent. 4y

EadieB The more houses you build, the more medical services you will need so it is a good idea to use the money this way. 4y

rubyslippersreads It was hard for me to get a sense of what would be the best financial decision. But if they‘d sold the land for upscale housing, I guess you‘d have an entirely different novel. 😄 4y
