I enjoyed the silliness of this tale as well as the illustrations in the book.

This book was very interesting to say the least. It has quite a funny idea to begin with, but some of the things that happen are very random. Although it is a modern fantasy tale, I found this book odd.

“Mr. Popper had read that penguins are extremely curious, and he soon found that this was true, for stepping out, the visitor began to inspect the house. Down the hall it went and into the bedrooms, with its strange, pompous little strut.“

blurb

I thought it was funny how a penguin showed up to Mr. Popper's house in a large box. He keeps the penguin in the icebox refrigerator and drills holes in it so the penguin can breathe. He takes the penguin on walks on a leash and even to the barbershop. The penguin, Greta, was sent to live with Mr. Popper and Captain Crook so the two penguins are not as lonely.

I think I would enjoy this book because it is about a house painter who tries to raise a dozen penguins in his family's home. He takes them on a nationwide circus tour to help pay to take care of them.

This modern fantasy book contains eccentric characters and preposterous situations that make a story thought to be believable, quite interesting. It contains characters that live normal lives but with an added twist of a family of penguins inside someone's house. Gives off the idea that creativity is possible, even in our own lives that we live. It also has a very exciting plot that gives a firm background and attention to detail.

This book was cute and tells the story of how one generic family got a surprising visit from penguins! I loved this book as a kid and actually made me want to keep reading. Something all kids enjoy!

quote

I chose the quote when mrs popper said “I sometimes with you had the kind of work that lasted all year” This kinda game me an idea that his world was about to change and gave me foreshadowing about the rest of the book.

I would read this maybe early on with 2nd graders becuase they would be very interested in the fact that there‘s animals (penguins) and it‘s not too much to follow and goes towards what they‘re interested in

This is a modern fantasy. I liked the beginning of this book it was a good introduction to what modern fantasy was and from it I could grasp the idea of modern fantasy books

Even though I‘ve read this book multiple times before, I can‘t resist any reason for a #reread. Mr Poppers Penguins was my second favourite book as a child ( Phantom Tollbooth #1), but I will fully admit to throwing an adult tantrum over how horrible the #BookToMovie adaptation was! They changed the whole story. Needless to say, I won‘t be rewatching the movie, but I‘ll reread the book any day of the year!

tdrosebud This was my favorite book as a child and I refused to watch the movie because it seemed like they changed a lot. Glad I made a good decision. 7mo

Then he had the furnace taken out and moved upstairs into the living room. It looked very #odd there, but, as Mrs. Popper said, it was a relief at least not to have to wear their overcoats all the time.

I read this to the kids and they loved the penguins and their antics. They were quite distressed when Mr. Popper was faced with making a decision re the penguins' fate and sad with the decision he did make but it just shows how attached they got to the characters. The book ended on a happy, silly note so quite satisfying. Good for both my 6 year old and my 10 year old (who would've preferred Harry Potter but still got drawn in to the story).

Just started this tonight with the kids and it‘s charming so far and just the right balance of not too complicated for the 6 year old and just interesting enough for the 10 year old. The penguin has arrived so the kids are eager to hear what happens with the penguin tomorrow night.

#Sassafras and I finished another bedtime read tonight. I actually liked this one. Sassafras says that his favorite part was when the service man was startled to see a penguin and ran out of the house. 3/5⭐️s We are looking for our next read and are open to recommendations.

Wife @sammisho He is 5. I looked at the Boxcar children books at the library tonight, but they didn‘t have the 1st book in the series. Does he need that for intro to the characters? There are so many books in the series!😮 10mo
Wife @catebutler I had never read it. New to me. And fun to read it with him. BTW skip the movie, it‘s awful. He liked some of the slapstick humor with the penguins, but the story was Not the same. 10mo
catebutler @Wife I vaguely remember the movie, when it first came out, with Jim Carrey, but you‘re right, the book was so much better! 10mo

#Zeek loves penguins. Like a lot. So I was excited when he asked to read Mr. Poppers Penguins. I tried reading it to him a while back but he wasn‘t quite ready for chapter books. He got a kick out of the book and is now asking if we can get a penguin to keep in the refrigerador 😂 #ZeekApproved #raisingreaders

This book, guys! I am so delighted to have found this at my library for the #ThrowbackReadathon 💙 I devoured this book in a little over an hour, and to be completely honest, my heart is so full right now. This reread was everything. I was worried that I wouldn‘t appreciate as much as I did as a middle schooler, but I probably appreciate it more. I swear, they don‘t make books like this anymore. It is PURE GOLD, I tell you. PURE GOLD! 💛🧡

Clwojick Also, I need to find a copy of this for my shelves. I love this hardcover edition. So damn beautiful. 💙 2y

Clwojick @brilliantglow I don‘t even have children yet, and this whole readathon has me scheming to hoard ALL of these beauties for when I do. But this one especially. My future children need this book in their life. 💕 (edited) 2y
brilliantglow Lol I totally understand my daughter is 4 and she already has over 400 books. Thanks in no small part to a friend of mine gifting her with books from an old kindergarten class. But there are certain special books that every kid needs in their library and this is definitely one of them. 2y

Clwojick @vkois88 it was one of my absolute favourites, and this copy from the library is stunning. The original cover had me literally hugging the book when I picked it up from the Library. ❤️💖 @Sresendez12 I am so excited to reread Sideways! I don‘t remember everything about it, but I remember throwing a mini fit when I had to return it to the school library. 😆 (edited) 2y
vkois88 Awww now I want to find a copy! Hmmmmm... maybe tomorrow I'll check the used bookstore by my house, since they still have their clearance sale going on 🤔🤔 The Sideways series was another favorite. It was always a race to beat other kids to the library to check it out 2y

Well. It was charming in the ridiculousness of the situation, and the ending made me laugh.

I do wonder how my son would like it. I think it would be confusing that almost no one knows what a penguin is in the story. And don‘t all male penguins incubate the egg, at least in the beginning? I know, I know, it‘s not a true story... But my kid would know things like that and it would matter.

OrangeMooseReads Those kind of things would matter to my child too. 2y

I am enjoying this silly story, however...

I just want to put my arm around Mrs Popper and explain that Mr Popper is perfectly capable of picking up around the house and helping with chores, and so are the children.

Then Mr and Mrs Popper might BOTH have time to read a book at night, or, you know, do other fun things that happen more often when you have a spouse who shares the chores.
