#noplacelikeholmes Not only did we finish Volume 1 on such an incredible high note! I love that we‘re reading the canon in order! I‘ve dipped in and out of Holmes over the years. But even that has rarely been from these editions of The Complete Sherlock Holmes on my shelves, so up until now I‘ve have little idea of where the stories I read fit into the overall narrative. @dabbe @Cuilin

dabbe I just got goosebumps reading this! I feel that same way! 🩶🧡🩶 6mo
Cuilin I dipped in too. I feel I‘m understanding it better by reading it in order. Thank you for joining us 🤗 6mo

What a creeptastic visitor! I would be figuring how to get this dude out of my house before he carves me up into a million little pieces! #noplacelikeholmes

Cuilin This is indeed a very strange greeting!! And Sherlock and Watson invite him to sit. 7mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin I know, right!? 😂 7mo
BarbaraJean “Until the original is available” *shudder* 7mo

IndoorDame @BarbaraJean yup! I know phrenology is big in these stories, but I still hear that and think this is someone who is calculating exactly how long until he can contrive some way to make the original available 😬 7mo
dabbe Excellent new word! #creeptastic!!! And the initials JM could be for James Moriarty--who maybe made it alive over the falls. 🤔 7mo
IndoorDame @dabbe definitely could be! Yet another reason not to invite our new #creeptastic visitor to sit down and have a smoke. 7mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Just throw him his cane and slam the door! 😂 7mo

#NoPlaceLikeHolmes @dabbe @Cuilin I can‘t tell you what a joy it‘s been to read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with you both and the rest of the gang! Thank you for being such amazing fearless leaders! This book has had some real gems, this week‘s selection being no exception, and I‘m beyond excited to dive into the rest of the canon!

dabbe Well, this just made my day/week/month ... 💙🩵💙 I am loving revisiting my fave tome of all time with you and the gang. And boy, Copper Beeches was quite violent, wasn't it? Can't wait to see what THE MEMOIRS have in store for us! 🤩 10mo
Cuilin Thank you Adina, I‘m loving this group too. I had only read a few stories before so it‘s nice to finally read them in canon order and have these lovely discussions every week. Thank you for being a part of it. 🫶 10mo

Thanks for the wonderful idea, @IndoorDame! 🥰

Not surprised my #1 was mystery, though detective fiction is my all-time favorite. I am #sherlocked!

I pulled this off of my shelves randomly a few weeks ago. I have previously read Adventures of SH, but as this contains the memoirs & Hound of the Baskervilles I have been making my way through it over the past few weeks. It's been wonderful revisiting 221B Baker Street. Sherlock has always been a comfort read for me. Also, Hound etc feels like a gothic masterpiece that subverted audience expectations.

LeahBergen I‘ve always loved the Holmes stories. I should revisit them one day! 3y
vivastory @LeahBergen They're a lot of fun! I plan on reading vol. 2 eventually 3y
batsy Spot on about Hounds. I read it long ago while spending a few nights at a friend's place on a farm and it well and truly creeped me out 😆 Like Leah, I want to revisit the stories and catch up with those I haven't read. 3y
vivastory @batsy I can only imagine how creepy that would have been. I was getting a bit unnerved by it reading it in the middle of the day 😬😂 3y
Branwen Sherlock is one of my comfort reads as well! 💕📚💕 3y

The Final Problem was published in The Strand Magazine in the UK & in McClure's in the US in December 1893. Yikes! What a Christmas gift. It is also interesting to me that Doyle doesn't introduce Moriarty until The Final Problem.

Richryan52 Are you a fan of pastiche? 3y
Bookwomble I read the tagged yonks ago about the real life Victorian criminal mastermind who inspired Doyle's Moriarty. Fascinating read, made more so for me as I was reading it while at a training centre in a former stately home which I learnt was the scene of one of his most notorious crimes! 3y
vivastory @Bookwomble I had no idea about this case! Thanks for the recommendation. Book synchronicity is always fascinating. I recall years ago finding out that Bonnie and Clyde were nearly captured about 10 minutes away from where I live. After finishing the book I drove to the spot and there was a commemorative plaque 3y

Bookwomble @vivastory There's a fantastic photo in the Napoleon of Crime book of Worth's bodyguard and hired muscle, a former circus strongman! It's little wonder Doyle was fascinated. And cool being able to take your book along to a site associated with Bobby and Clyde. It must have given a real connection. 3y
Bookwomble @vivastory Bonnie, obviously! I don't think "Bobby" would have survived Bonnie's jealousy for long ? 3y
vivastory @Bookwomble Bonnie & Clyde were quite the pair 🤣 3y

Thanks for all of the Birthday wishes, friends! It definitely brightened my day 👏👏
Further Holmes trivia: according to the footnote from The Crooked Man, this is the sole instance in Doyle's writings of one of Holmes trademark phrases.

sarahbarnes Happy Birthday! Fellow Virgo! 🍻 3y

I love when you reach a passage in a book where the title is revealed. Far rarer is when a title is based on the work of another author & not a story that is well known, as is the case with the above inspiration for Haddon's book.

LeahBergen I love this, too! 👍 3y
Megabooks Same!! 3y
Branwen Oh WOW! I somehow never realized this is where Haddon got the inspiration for the title of his book! 3y
Suet624 I had no idea! 3y
