Wickedly hilarious and utterly recognizable, Girls in White Dresses tells the story of three women grappling with heartbreak and career change, family pressure and new loveall while suffering through an endless round of weddings and bridal showers.Isabella, Mary, and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, collect ribbons and wrapping paper, eat minuscule sandwiches and doll-sized cakes. They wear pastel dresses and drink champagne by the case, but amid the celebration these women have their own lives to contend with: Isabella is working at a mailing-list company, dizzy with the mixed signals of a boss who claims she's on a diet but has Isabella file all morning if she forgets to bring her a chocolate muffin. Mary thinks she might cry with happiness when she finally meets a nice guy who loves his mother, only to realize he'll never love Mary quite as much. And Lauren, a waitress at a Midtown bar, swears up and down she won't fall for the sleazy bartendera promise that his dirty blond curls and perfect vodka sodas make hard to keep. With a wry sense of humor, Jennifer Close brings us through those thrilling, bewildering, what-on-earth-am-I-going-to-do-with-my-life years of early adulthood. These are the years when everyone else seems to have a plan, a great job, and an appropriate boyfriend, while Isabella has a blind date with a gay man, Mary has a crush on her boss, and Lauren has a goldfish named Willard. Through boozy family holidays and disastrous ski vacations, relationships lost to politics and relationships found in pet stores, Girls in White Dresses pulls us deep inside the circle of these friends, perfectly capturing the wild frustrations and soaring joys of modern life.

Reading for the third time! I have always loved this book. Traveling to NY today and Ireland tomorrow. Thinking I‘ll leave this book somewhere in the next airport for someone new to discover.

⭐⭐⭐The writing was straightforward and an easy/funny read. I felt validated at many times throughout the book. The only thing that was challenging was the timeline of everyone's stories. For example, at one point Mary was lusting over Brian then suddenly 5 chapters later, it had been 2 years later and she was engaged. I loved Isabella and really related to her story. Lauren always had me laughing. #14bookchallenge #book6of14 #catsoflitsy

Megabooks I‘ve actually read this a couple of times. It‘s entertaining. A mild pick for me. 5y

#YouAreCordiallyInvited is such a fun episode! Jadzia is a much better match for Worf than Troi. It‘s the breath everyone on DS9 needed to take after several very serious episodes.

The tagged book is one of the few books I‘ve read about weddings, and I think I‘ve read it 2-3x. I was never one of those girls who looked at bridal magazines, and I wasn‘t the friend you‘d take dress shopping. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #StarTrekSummerJune

Great book and one I probably wouldn‘t have read if it hadn‘t been recommended. Girls in White Dresses is a series of interlocking short stories; you get to follow a group of women friends through their 20s. They navigate careers, relationships, and families-of-origin as they figure out what it is they want in life. Very relatable!

At first this book really annoyed me with its writing style being all over the place but then I grew to like it. There's a lot of characters to keep straight but by the end you're really rooting for them all. This book kind of reminded me a little bit of sex in the city in the best ways. Girls finding love and themselves in their 20s...who doesn't love a good "love" story, even if it is about loving yourself?

Back in the office after a week away and starting a new book after playing catch up! Not quite sure how I feel about the style of this book yet, but hopeful!

My sister gave me this book after she moved away and I was having a hard time dealing with it. I lived this book about female friendships in your 20s and early 30s.

4🌟When I read this 3 years ago, I gave it 3🌟. The women in these stories are my age and remind me a lot of my college friends. Even though I've diverged from my college friends, I still saw a lot of my 20s and early 30s in the stories. The ones who married early and divorced or had kids. The broken engagements. The ones who, like me, are still single. I think most women in their 20s or 30s can find one women to relate to. PS I'm Lauren.

Em890 This title just makes me want to sing/watch The Sound of Music. 😆🎶 8y
Megabooks It comes from people singing the song in one story. I had forgotten about the song until I read it. 8y
Megabooks @Em890 See above 😃 8y
Em890 @Ebooksandcooks It is one of my favorite musicals. 8y

My first year as a veterinarian was terrifying. It didn't help that I had a bad mentor/boss. It's weirdly comforting to know people in other professions feel the same.

BookishFeminist I definitely felt the same way handling my first legal cases. I had a bad mentor so it really set me on edge. Thankfully I was able to find better mentors after that. So terrifying when someone's life/wellbeing is in your hands! 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Yes! Fortunately my second boss/ mentor was much better and taught me a lot. 😃👍🏻 8y
Inked.and.nerdy I was terrified going into my internship to be a therapist. I have a second one coming up and again, utterly terrified. I think it's just part of starting something new that is bigger than just you. Feeling that fear lets you know you are on the verge of something truly great and remarkable ❤️ 8y

Laura317 Thank God my mentor was wonderful! Of course, I never really handled cases - we did real estate law. I can relate to the quote, though. The fear of the unknown is sometimes the worst. 8y
Megabooks That's definitely true @Inked.and.nerdy ! I know you'll do well. 8y
Megabooks @Laura317 A good mentor makes all the difference IMO. I'm glad you had one! 8y

By now y'all know what I do when I'm nervous: read short story collections!!! These are the three I'm reading now. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! #ebc #shortstorylove

See All 27 Comments
tpixie Book riot had an article about 16 books we should read this fall and about three of them were short stories 8y
Eyelit Have you already read Vonnegut's collections of short stories? If no, I highly recommend those. Otherwise I'd recommend Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber for reimagined fairy tale stories and Zombies vs Unicorns was pretty fun to read 8y
Megabooks Thank you @Notafraidofwords @Eyelit and @KarenUK ! I've made a lot of library recs! Unfortunately they don't already have any of them. 😞 (At least as ebooks.) Maybe soon though. They seem to like my recs, so fingers crossed! 8y
Megabooks @tpixie Thanks! I'll have to check it out! 8y
Megabooks By the way peeps, keep them coming. Surely the library will have some. 👍🏻 8y
tpixie 💜 8y
Megabooks @NovelGirl82 Thanks! I've read it twice this year during other nervous times. It's a great book. 😃 8y
NovelGirl82 It's one of my favorites! Have you read any of her other collections? 8y
BookishFeminist How about some of the best American short story collections? Those are usually solid. Also 8y
BookishFeminist Any of A.S. Byatt's short story collections. I'm reading this one now and loving it, kind of like Kelly Link 8y
BookishFeminist This one or her other one Almost Famous Women are two of my faves 8y
BookishFeminist I hope your nerves calm soon 💕 8y
Megabooks @NovelGirl82 No. My library doesn't have any others in Kindle format. 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Thank you for the recs! Fortune smiles is the only one I've read. I'll have to check my library. A little calmer this weekend since I've figured out I won't hear about the job until Tuesday at least. For tonight I'm reading 8y
NovelGirl82 Oh bummer!! I am glad to see so many other short story lovers, though. They are my favorite, & I'm always looking for more! What about 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Oh I'm glad to hear that! If you want any more recs if your library doesn't have those, let me know! Plenty more where that came from. :) Did you like Fortune Smiles? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you about the job. Waiting is the worst. Let me know how you're liking American Heiress! 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Thanks for the crossed fingers and the recs!! 💚 I loved Fortune Smiles. I wrote a blog post about it during a throwback to my favorite books of 2015 week! So far American Heiress is great. I'm about to post a fun fact quote. He writes a lot of background, which I love in non-fiction, but it's only 329 pages on Kindle. 8y
Louise The Roald Dahl Omnibus! Any of Neil Gaiman's short story collections. 3 by Finney, by Jack Finney; and About Time, by Jack Finney. 8y
Megabooks Thank you again @Louise !! 😊 8y

First read of the day got me through hour three of my #24in48 #readathon! Funny, honest, and filled with more than one deeply recognizable post college dilemma (like remaining cheerful during your 6th bridal shower...for the same bride). A breezy and enjoyable summer read - particularly on audio!💍🍷👰🍸👗👯

In college, 29 had seemed impossibly old. By now, she'd thought, she'd be married and have kids. But as each year went by, she didn't feel much different than she had before. Time kept going by and she was just here, the same ⏳💭

Readaholics And one day you wake up and you're 39, still thinking the same thing. Lol. Sounds like a great book. 8y
BittersweetBooks @Readaholics hahaha 😂 I loved the book, highly recommend! 8y
