It‘s definitely me. I enjoyed some of the stories, but there were two major barriers that killed it for me. 1. After reading 40 books in the In Death series narrated by Susan Ericksen, it just felt wrong listening to her read something else. I kept waiting for Eve to appear. 2. I‘m not a big fan of short stories and in the audiobook they all ran together. No definite break to give an indication a new story was starting. I found it disconcerting!

Hooked_on_books Short stories on audio are tough. I‘ve found some that work, but typically print is better. 9mo

Deblovestoread I struggle with short stories, too, and can‘t imagine them as audio books. 9mo
TheAromaofBooks No indication of story breaks would be quite disconcerting! 9mo
Bluebird @Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle @Deblovestoread nice to know it‘s not just me. If I try another, I‘ll definitely go for print version instead. 9mo
Bluebird @TheAromaofBooks it was so strange. I can‘t believe the publishers didn‘t think of it. Even a few extra seconds of silence would have worked. It felt like a long run-on sentence—with a topic change in the middle.🤯 9mo

Full disclosure that I‘m rating this only based on the first 3 stories… I‘m just not in a short story mood right now. I did really like the first two though. I have enjoyed all of the Lauren Groff I‘ve read, and I expect I may return to this at some point. #AuthorAMonth

Groff can craft a short story like no other. I mean these were simply amazing. Each truly felt like a miniature novel. The title story about five journalists taken prisoner by French Nazi sympathizers will stick with me a long time. If you‘re looking for a book for #AuthorAMonth I highly recommend this!! Plus this cover! 🤩🤩

vlwelser I love this cover. And agreed on the short story crafting. 9mo

Not being a huge fan of short stories, I did find these stories interesting. Lauren Groff does have a way with words. They are well written. I gave this collection of stories 4/5 stars.

Soubhiville Oh good! I‘m hoping to read this one in February too for #AuthorAMonth. Glad you liked it. 10mo

Catching up on posting... I finished this a couple of days ago. I've now read all of Lauren Groff's books. I think these short stories are where her writing really shines (Florida, her other story collection, is fine, but not as good). This is a wide and varied collection of excellently written stories. #storyaday2023

I did some #audiobaking today, making cake balls for the first time. (Surely there's a better name for these things. Can we call then cake truffles instead?) These short stories have been excellent so far.

Next read! I still need to get Florida but I‘ve had this one on the shelf for awhile so figured I‘d dig into her earlier short stories. Featured here with #PercyCat 🐱 and an awesome bookmark.

Book #1 of @DeweysReadathon complete! Wanted to finish this one for a while (I've been stuck midway through for ages). Lauren Groff is a lovely writer and her short stories are beautiful and varied. #readathon

Nat_Reads I love her writing style! I ended up disliking Fates and Furies plot wise, but I think I should more of her. 7y

Sometimes in NYC I get a bit desensitized & everything reads the same. To punch through my reading slump, I'm re-reading a wonderful collection of sad& magical short stories by one of my favorite authors. 👌

Friend is having a BBQ so here I am prepared with my personal manuscript to edit and Lauren Groff's short story collection as a distraction for when I need a break from my own words.
PS she is a wonderful writer.

I say this is a reverse silhouette, but Lily said it is just me being lazy. She kind of has a point. I'm too exhausted to search further! Gonna see what all you littens were reading today and then crash. Good night! #silhouettes #seasonsreadings2016

readinginthedark Haven't read the others in this collection yet, but the title story is so intense and well-written! Have you read this already? 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @readinginthedark I have. I really love her writing. I really loved The Monsters of Templeton and, I know it's polarizing, but I kind of loved Fates and the Furies, too. And Arcadia is really great, too. 8y

Lauren Groff is such a beautiful writer. I loved the prose in this book more than some of the stories. I'm somewhere between a 'pick' and 'so-so' here, but Groff's skills are tipping my rating to a pick.

Moray_Reads I didn't really care for Monsters of Templeton but I loved Fates and Furies 8y

Lauren Groff is a powerhouse. I still think about last Fates and Furies about once a week, despite finishing it a year ago. This collection of short stories is a perfect taste of the proses I loved mixed with stories of life and regret which seem to be the most constant themes among the nine works here. favorites included L. Debard & Aliette and Blythe
