Complete Poetry | Maya Angelou
129 posts | 48 read | 3 reading | 51 to read
Throughout her illustrious career in letters, Maya Angelou gifted, healed, and inspired the world with her words. Now the beauty and spirit of those words live on in this new and complete collection of poetry that reflects and honors the writer s remarkable life. Every poetic phrase, every poignant verse can be found within the pages of this sure-to-be-treasured volume from her reflections on African American life and hardship in the compilation "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water fore I Diiie "( Though there s one thing that I cry for / I believe enough to die for / That is every man s responsibility to man ) to her revolutionary celebrations of womanhood in the poem Still I Rise " "( Out of the huts of history s shame / I rise / Up from a past that s rooted in pain / I rise ) to her On the Pulse of Morning " "tribute at President William Jefferson Clinton s inauguration ( Lift up your eyes upon / The day breaking for you. / Give birth again / To the dream. ). "Maya Angelou: The Complete Poetry" also features her final long-form poems, including A Brave and Startling Truth, Amazing Peace, His Day Is Done, and the honest and endearing "Mother: " I feared if I let you go You would leave me eternally. You smiled at my fears, saying I could not stay in your lap forever ""This collection also includes the never-before-published poem Amazement Awaits, commissioned for the 2008 Olympic Games: We are here at the portal of the world we had wished for At the lintel of the world we most need. We are here roaring and singing. We prove that we can not only make peace, we can bring it with us. Timeless and prescient, this definitive compendium will warm the hearts of Maya Angelou s most ardent admirers as it introduces new readers to the legendary poet, activist, and teacher a phenomenal woman for the ages."

Not last Friday but the Friday before I got to go op shopping. It‘s the perfect way for me to sink into the weekend. I live for weekends! I was obsessed with Maya as a teenager but didn‘t rate I Know Why the Caged Bid Sings but I‘m into her poetry now as the kids are studying it at school. I‘ve been wearing a lot of these no sleeve jumpers as winter in Australia was scarily mild this year. I loved it but it doesn‘t bode well for bush fire season.

I always love collected works because they let you see what subjects a poet returned to again and again through their lifetime. Maya Angelou‘s work is special because no matter what she‘s writing about her tone is tough as iron, but still fresh and hopeful. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

#AuthorAMonth2022 @Soubhiville

I was first introduced to Maya Angelou's poetry in high school but I've only read a few poems over the years.

This complete collection was amazing. Her versatility as an author is very evident in her poetry because she writes about a wide range of topics and her word choice and rhythm create a harmonious song full of truth, hope, and heart.

I'm so glad I picked this collection to read for this challenge. 💚

Soubhiville I‘m so glad you enjoyed it. 3y

A ‘sensory‘ poem.

In this poem, Maya Angelou is not interested in the healthy, nutritional food offered by the diner. Instead she fancied some meat.

Recently, I've been mourning the loss of an amazing girl I used to know. It's been 8 years or so since I last saw her, and she was only 16 when she killed herself. Such a beautiful, musical, and rambunctious soul. My grief reminded me that working with kids gives me the chance to make a difference in someone's life. It also made me realize how much, even as an introvert, I crave connection with others. And now I'm back on Litsy. I missed you all.

Cathythoughts Beautiful post .... grief ♥️💔. I love this poem 5y

readinginthedark @Cathythoughts @batsy @Scorpioseah @MaureenMc @Jas16 @cobwebmoth @Bookzombie @mabell Thank you all so much! I saw these comments when you posted them but didn't answer, I'm sorry. I'm finally in a place where I can watch videos of her and listen to her sing without crying uncontrollably. The mommy hormones don't help. But I'm letting myself grieve slowly, and at least I can smile through my tears. I appreciate your support more than I can say. 5y
readinginthedark @mabell Agreed! What do you think of the last weekend of September? My schedule's a little crazy, but if that works for you, I'll post something about it for everyone. 5y
mabell @readinginthedark I‘m sorry it has taken so long for me to reply! I kept forgetting to check with Chris about that weekend. I think it should work. Fall gets busy for us - it seems like there is something every weekend! 5y
readinginthedark @mabell So sorry! I offered September and then haven't been on since. I don't know if you've discussed another meet-up time, but I'm thinking I could swing sometime in early March or late April or May, if we want to do a Spring meet-up! 5y
mabell Sounds good, and welcome back! 5y
readinginthedark @mabell Thanks! I'll get a few dates in mind and post something soon. If I get sidetracked and forget, just remind me! 5y
