An Unwanted Guest
An Unwanted Guest | Shari Lapena
The new page-turner from the author of the phenomenal bestseller, THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR, and A STRANGER IN THE HOUSE. ********** We cant choose the strangers we meet. As the guests arrive at beautiful, remote Mitchells Inn, theyre all looking forward to a relaxing weekend deep in the forest, miles from anywhere. They watch their fellow guests with interest, from a polite distance. Usually we can avoid the people who make us nervous, make us afraid. With a violent storm raging outside the hotel, the group finds itself completely cut off from the outside world. Nobody can get in or out. And then the first body is found . . . and the horrifying truth comes to light. Theres a killer among them and nowhere to run. Until we find ourselves in a situation we cant escape. Trapped. ********** Readers love Shari Lapena: Best book Ive read in ages 5* fast paced, twisting thriller The pace never let up On the edge of my seat to the end I havent picked up a book in 9 years and Im so glad that I picked this up! I loved it. Incredibly readable and unputdownable Very clever, well written, intriguing and suspenseful Had me hooked from start to finish

So you know the Geico commercial where the stupid kids are debating how to escape a killer and finally one says, “Why don‘t we just get in the running car?!?!?” But instead they hide behind the chainsaws. That‘s the plot of Lapena‘s story in a nutshell. A fast read, lots of head shaking moments, and I either WANTED the characters to die or said “seriously???” multiple times as I turned the pages. Just not for me!

It kept me reading late into the night two evenings in a row.

Starting this one during my walk to work. Who‘s read this one? Was it good? I‘ve had the physical book on my shelf for a while, so I‘m glad to finally be reading it. I love being able to pop between physical and audio when tackling books that I hope to finish quickly. School starts on Tuesday and I have 12 audiobooks out, so I‘m on a bit of a time crunch.lol ♥️

Caksf @Clwojick I picked this one up at the airport several months ago and it helped the flight pass quickly! I thought it was a solid mystery, with some good twists. I would define as it as “beach read” and enjoyed it! 3mo
RainyDayReading I read this last year in one sitting while I was snowed in and enjoyed it. Had a good twist I wasn‘t expecting and it‘s not too heavy if that makes sense. 3mo

This book has a great ambiance. A group of strangers are stranded at a hotel due to a snow storm and a murder disrupts their stay in the middle of the night. I got a really strong Agatha Christie vibe from this book, but then it really fell flat. When the twist was revealed, I found it to be under developed and rushed. This book wasn‘t bad, but I just wanted it to come together better.

It's always good when my sister buys books that I want to read 😁 This is my first by this author and I found it solid, enjoyable and atmospheric. It's a modern-day Christie-esque locked room mystery that I found quite hard to put down. I had a vague suspicion about whodunit but it was still fun to learn who it was and I found the final twist quite fitting. Now all I want to do for the rest of the week/month is read mysteries in a similar vein!

Simona I‘m always interested in Christie types of books, especially when are locked room. I think that those are the trickiest and hardest to write. Stacked! 6mo
rohit-sawant Oo, nice! I stacked this months ago but wasn't aware it was a locked room mystery. Bumping this up my TBR 🙌🏼 6mo
batsy @Simona @rohit-sawant OK I hope I've used the term locked room correctly ? Not a typical one, but definitely influenced by locked room mystery conventions. I always like the "strangers come together and murder and mayhem ensue" type setting! Hope you guys enjoy it if you give it a try ? 6mo

A handful of people are staying at a remote hotel when a body is found at the bottom of the stairs one morning. Most think that it was an accident but one guest, an attorney, believes that the person was murdered. To make matters worse, a winter storm hit causing the power to go out. What else could possibly go wrong? Here‘s a hint: another dead body.

This thriller will have you guessing till the end!

Quick read. Just picked this up yesterday and finished just now. I rated it so-so, only because I‘m not a huge fan of this genre. A quick summary without giving away spoilers : a handful of people show up at an Inn in the wintertime for a weekend getaway. All are there for different reasons. It starts with a murder . Who is the victim and who is the killer ? You‘ll have to read the book to find out more. I may try another by Lapena. 3.5🌟

I have a question for anyone who may have read this book, or possibly another Lapena book. I‘m reading the Large Print version, and I can‘t ever remember reading a book in which some of the print is bold to emphasize certain words or phrases. Have any if you read this in regular print ( or own a copy ) ? I‘m not very familiar with LP books, so not sure if this is a thing with them, or this author‘s books. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

TheLibrarian I just finished this book in regular print and don‘t remember any bold words 7mo
Kaye Thanks @TheLibrarian ...I thought this was strange ... must be a thing with LP books I guess. Thanks for the answer. ✨ 7mo
xicanti I haven‘t read the book, but I wonder if the words in bold were italicized in the regular print version. Maybe studies revealed bold is easier on the eyes than italics? (edited) 7mo

Kaye @xicanti Good point 💡 I never thought of that. I do think italicized print would be harder to see. 7mo
krissylovesbooks75 I read the book a few months ago and I noticed in the regular version I had, those words were italicized. 7mo
Laughterhp I accidentally read the large print version of this book! It was really annoying the words were bold, but I think I posted it and someone said it was because they would‘ve been italicized. 7mo
Kaye @krissylovesbooks75 Thanks 🙂 I guess I know the answer then. I can‘t ever remember reading a book like this. I was just curious. /. @Laughterhp Thank you. Yes, I wish I could say I read this by mistake, but my old lady eyes are needing larger print even with my glasses on. I‘m not too thrilled about it because the selection of LP books is very limited. This book is pretty good though. 7mo

I read this murder mystery in one sitting, when I needed a distraction from being sick. Guests are snowed in at a small inn, when one of them dies from an apparent fall down the stairs. Was it an accident? Is one of them a murderer or is there an intruder? I guessed the main mystery pretty quickly but there was a lot going on with character secrets and motivations that kept me engaged throughout. Recommended.

An atmospheric Whodunnit in the vein of Agatha Christie. The cast of many assembles for a weekend getaway in an isolated inn in the snowy Catskills and are cut off from the rest of civilization by a wild blizzard. As the temperature plummets the body count rises. Who will survive until Monday? Brilliant! I loved it. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
