Octavia's Brood
Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements | Walidah Imarisha, adrienne maree brown
Whenever we envision a world without war, without prisons, without capitalism, we are producing speculative fiction. Organizers and activists envision, and try to create, such worlds all the time. Walidah Imarisha and adrienne maree brown have brought twenty of them together in the first anthology of short stories to explore the connections between radical speculative fiction and movements for social change. The visionary tales ofOctavias Brood span genressci-fi, fantasy, horror, magical realismbut all are united by an attempt to inject a healthy dose of imagination and innovation into our political practice and to try on new ways of understanding ourselves, the world around us, and all the selves and worlds that could be. The collection is rounded off with essays by Tananarive Due and Mumia Abu-Jamal, and a preface by Sheree Rene Thomas.

The best thing about short story collections is that there is always at least one in them that I love. There were actually a few in this that were excellent. Of course there were also a few I didn't get at all. But that's ok, not every story works for every person. My daughter already called dibs to borrow this from me. I think she will enjoy (most of) it.

Feb TBR! Planning on participating in 2 readathons this month (#contemporaryathon and #tometopple ) and picking up books relevant to Black History Month, as well as my usual mood-reading. #tbr

"Seeking escape from the constraints of her life when she was twelve, Octavia [Butler] started watching a movie called _Devil Girls From Mars_, and she had the epiphany so many of us have experienced: "Hell, I can write better than that!" Thank goodness for bad science fiction movies."

This book led me to another one that's now on my list--Fire on the Mountain by Terry Bisson. I'm so excited to read it. I love when books lead me to other books ☺

February TBR! I‘m #currentlyreading The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin as well as Good and Mad and Five Feet Apart, and I‘ve got a good stack to pick from once I finish those. Have you guys read any of these?

I really enjoyed this collection of speculative fiction focusing on the genre‘s intersection with social justice. It was written by activists & authors alike, but with very few exceptions, the work was strong enough that I couldn‘t tell who the not-authors were as I read. (It also broke my #readersblock!! 🙌🏻)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • #speculativefiction #shortfiction

Favorite stories: Black Angel, The Long Memory, Small & Bright, Hollow, Children Who Fly

I have had #readersblock since the beginning of November and it‘s the worst. Three perfectly lovely books, each with an interesting and unique voice.... but I can‘t get myself to read them. It‘s unbearably frustrating.

So. I‘m going to put the stack on hold for a little while and switch gears with this collection of #shortfiction from social justice movements that follows the tradition of one of my all time favorite authors. 🤞🏻 this works!

Thank you so, so much, @ReadingsByTheC, for the way generous and super thoughtfully curated #summersantagoespostal gifts!!! I truly adore them all. The books are a wonderful mix of titles that have been on my radar (Crooked Heart, which took me a second to recognize because I hadn't yet seen the paperback cover; and Octavia's Brood - social justice sci fi = 😍😍😍) ⬇️

Christine and those that are new-to-me (Grace - not sure how I missed this one, looks fantastic; and The Inquisitor's Tale, also sounds great, and such amazing illustrations inside!). I literally gasped when I pulled the Prince coloring book out of the bag and immediately hugged it. 😜💜🎸🙌 ⬇️ (edited) 7y
Christine And all the rest was equally perfect: a lovely note; exquisitely scented literary candles; pretty, unique journal; fun bookmark and stickers; awesomely metallic colored pencils; bonus independent bookstore bookmarks inside the books - right down to the too-cute bookish unicorn stickers on the note envelope!! 📚🦄💗 7y
ReadingsByTheC I am so glad you liked everything! It was so much fun shopping for you! 🤗 7y

"No one explained how herding up Asian and Arab Americans based on the color of their skin, seizing their property, and then forcibly incarcerating them without trial in work camps could be in their best interest. But then again, history had shown conclusively that the American public didn't need a complicated explanation as much as they needed a clear enemy to blame." - Bao Phi (Revolution Shuffle)

I'm revisiting this powerhouse of a book tonight. Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Movements is an amazing collection inspired by the teaching of Octavia Butler. The stories create worlds where race, sexuality, ability/disability, gender, violence and class are radically reimagined. 💓

Bibliogeekery @BookishFeminist - enjoy! I feel like it helps to remember that some of the people who were invited to contribute had never written before. The project is so incredible, some of the stories are stronger than others. Overall, it was such a pleasure to read and I watched a presentation by some of the contributors that was profoundly political, inspiring and amazing! 8y

Busboys and Poets is a restaurant in DC that has a Politics and Prose shop in the front and I'm still amazed I didn't just hand the guy my wallet and tell him to keep it. Amazing staff, delicious food, and so many awesomely diverse books 😍

Diversity Friday. This book of Science Fiction Short Stories from Social Movements is inspired by the works and teachings of Octavia Butler. It is such an important contribution to visionary fiction. I can't recommend this book and the broader social project these folks are working on enough. BLM.

Chessa I've been wanting to read this forever and I know my library will never get it. May have to actually spring for it and make it part of my permanent collection. 8y
